Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Boren Scholarships are for undergraduate students. You are eligible to apply for the Boren Scholarship if you are:

  • A U.S. citizen at the time of application
  • A high school graduate, or have earned a GED
  • Matriculated in an undergraduate degree program located within the United States accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Boren Scholars must remain matriculated in their undergraduate programs for the duration of the scholarship and may not graduate until the scholarship is complete.
  • Applying to a study abroad program that meets home institution standards in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.  Boren Scholarships are not for study in the United States.

Boren Scholarship Calendar

Late-August

  • The online application is released.

Fall/Winter

  • Open Application Period – Applicants complete online application, compile all supplementary materials and forward to their campus representatives.

February 5, 2014 – Boren Scholarship Deadline!

  • Online application must be complete at 5:00 p.m. EST. All supplementary materials must arrive at IIE, at the address below. IIE cannot confirm receipt of materials, so campus representatives and applicants should send materials using a traceable method to ensure delivery.

February 7, 2014 – Campus Representative Evalution Deadline

  • Campus representative must submit any online evaluations by 5:00 p.m. EST.

March/April

  • Complete applications are processed and distributed to selection panels for review.

Late April

All applicants are notified of their status by mail, and Boren Scholarship recipients are mailed award packets.

June

  • Orientation and Convocation in Washington, DC for Boren Scholarship recipients.
  • June 1 is the earliest a Boren Scholarship-funded program can start.
