An Urban Scholar’s competencies include:
· Proven ability to identify, analyze, and solve problems
· Able to work cooperatively with a wide range of personalities
· Hard worker, quick learner, and ability to assume responsibility
· Work well under pressure to meet deadlines
· Well-groomed appearance
· Ability to elicit confidence and build rapport
· Self-motivated and can work well independently
· Basic knowledge of computer software packages (e.g. 2010 Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Outlook)
· Previous public sector experience a plus
Urban Scholars are required to attend regular leadership development trainings and events. Department-specific job descriptions will be provided once selected.

Required Qualifications:

Required Education:
Candidates must be enrolled and in good standing at an accredited two-year, four-year, college, university, graduate, or law school or a recent graduate from up to 6 months prior to the start of the program. Also, candidates must have completed their first year of post-secondary education. All academic majors are encouraged to apply.
Required Experience:
Paid and unpaid professional experiences will be considered. Previous public sector work experience is valued in our selection process, but not required.
Background Check:
Background checks will be administered.
Other Qualifications:
Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Please submit all of the following items and answer the essay questions fully as it is the primary form of selection:

· Resume (including education, work history, accomplishments [i.e. honors, awards, etc.])
· Unofficial transcript labeled with your student information (i.e. name, major, etc.)
· A one to two page, 1.5 spaced, cover letter addressed to the “Urban Scholars Team” answering the following questions:

o Why do you want to be an Urban Scholar?
o What’s the difference that you want to make? How is your community going to be different because of you?
o Share an experience that illustrates your ability to lead yourself or others?
o Leadership begins with you; so, tell us about a time when you faced adversity or a challenge and came out better for it or demonstrate your resilience?
o Why are you interested in government/public sector?
o If you were a previous Urban Scholar, what changes have you seen in yourself and your leadership of others since your Urban Scholars experience?
