Through this program, interns will build relationships with established capitol leaders (non-partisan staff, lobbyists, Republican/Democrat elected officials), gain exposure to various kinds of careers in policy, and get real-world experience in career fields they would like to learn more about — and build a strong professional resume in the process.Student participants: Any student in good academic standing at an accredited two- or four-year institution of higher education who identifies as a person of color may apply to participate. Preference will be given to students in undergraduate schools.

Program dates:
October 15 – Application opens
November 16 – Applications due
December 14 – Student applicants notified of decision
February 3 – Kickoff – Interns will gather in their first cohort meeting to meet each other and get an orientation
May 25 – Final day of internship

Internship details: In the program, students will:
– Be matched with a mentor working at the legislature for the 2016 session.
– Work at their internship 10 hours per week during the spring semester.
– Attend regular cohort meetings with their colleagues in the program for networking and skill-building sessions. Topics may include subjects such as policy analysis, written communications, public speaking, networking, career profiles, and others.
– Because the need to support themselves and/or their families is often a barrier for young people of color seeking internship experience, students will be paid for their working hours.
