Description

The UN Youth Summer School on Diplomacy is an educational programme that provides a unique space for learning and networking for students from Romania and their peers from all around the world. Here, distinguished speakers will contribute through diverse perspectives and experiences towards a better understanding of the topics covered, encouraging new thinking and inspiring debates.

This year’s Summer School on Diplomacy will take place between the 20th and 26th of July 2015 in Bucharest, Romania with the general theme Ukraine: Beyond the Headlines. The project aims to deepen and consolidate knowledge on regional and global challenges to peace and security, conflict analysis and resolution, as well as the art of diplomacy and negotiations.

The programme will comprise lectures, debates and workshops touching on current political, cultural and social challenges posed by the complex security situation that characterizes the European continent, with global implications.

The curriculum addresses general issues and theoretical aspects of International Relations, Security Studies, Peace Studies and Diplomacy in an effort to offer a comprehensive image of the crisis that arguably started in March last year with the illegal annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation. It was a geopolitical move deemed to belong to the 19th century that shocked the international community and, more specifically, woke the European Union from its post-historic dream. More precisely, the focus will be on the historical evolution of the relationship between Ukraine and Russia with an emphasis on the status of Crimea, the International Law aspect of the ongoing conflict and its geopolitical significance, in order to build a better understanding of the stakes and try to formulate viable solutions.

Eligibility

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • The UN Youth Summer School is open to students currently enrolled in a bachelor’s, master’s or PhD programme, recent graduates and young professionals;
  • Age limits: 18 – 30 years old;
  • Please note that the working language of the Summer School is English; therefore participants should have good knowledge of the language;.

Costs

  Participation fees :

The participation fee includes:

Open Society Fellowship Programme

Description

The Open Society Fellowship was founded in 2008 to support individuals pursuing innovative and unconventional approaches to fundamental open society challenges. The fellowship funds work that will enrich public understanding of those challenges and stimulate far-reaching and probing conversations within the Open Society Foundations and in the world.

A fellowship project might identify a problem that has not previously been recognized, develop new policy ideas to address familiar problems, or offer a new advocacy strategy. Project themes should cut across at least two areas of interest to the Open Society Foundations. Among these are human rights, government transparency, access to information and to justice, and the promotion of civil society and social inclusion.

Fellows are expected to take full advantage of the foundations’ expansive reach and work to bring new people and fresh ideas into the organization’s ambit. Successful projects should push the boundaries of current thinking and carry lessons that can be applied to a variety of settings. Fellows may produce a variety of work products, including publications such as books, reports, or blogs; innovative public-education projects; or the launch of new campaigns or organizations. They may also engage in activities such as hosting panel discussions, traveling to conferences, participating in policy debates, and aggressively promoting their ideas in public venues.

Eligibility Criteria

The Open Society Fellowship accepts proposals from anywhere in the world. Applicants should possess a deep understanding of their chosen subject and a track record of professional accomplishment. Past and current fellows have included journalists, activists, academics, and practitioners in a variety of fields. Successful applicants will be eager to exploit the many resources offered by the Open Society Foundations and be prepared to engage constructively with our global network. Ideal fellows are specialists who can see beyond the parochialisms of their field and possess the tenacity to complete a project of exceptional merit. Proficiency in spoken English is required.

Ineligibility Criteria

The fellowship does not fund enrollment for degree or non-degree study at academic institutions, including dissertation research.

This is a fellowship for individuals only; proposals from two or more applicants will not be accepted.

The United Nations Alliance Of Civilizations is now selecting emerging leaders and young professionals from the Middle East, North Africa, Europe and North America to participate in the 2015 edition of the Fellowship Programme.
With the objective of fostering intercultural dialogue and interfaith understanding, the Fellowship offers its participants a first hand exposure to diversity and the opportunity to experience cultural immersion while interacting with a wide range of actors and partners.
Participants from Europe and North America (EUNA) and from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) will travel for two weeks to their counterparts’ region where they will acquire crucial knowledge and experience to understand their host countries’ culture, society and diversity.

Patterns of Integration of Old and New Minorities in a Europe of Complex Diversity

While numerous autochthonous ethnic, national and regional groups formulate claims on power-sharing and minority rights, pushing their host states to accommodate diversity, increased mobility has contributed to the further proliferation of cultural, linguistic, and religious diversity in the European Union and its south-eastern vicinity. Commentators label this as “complex” diversity, as many classically more homogenous societies become more and more multicultural, and various forms of transnational citizenship become a widespread phenomenon.

This increasingly complex diversity of the European societies, together with the global spread of supranational norms and values of human rights is continuously undermining the Westphalian system of homogeneous nation states. The question arises how these challenges can be reconciled, what best practices can be identified for both “old” and “new” minorities, and whether the arrangements for the former can be a model for the latter, mobile minorities. In sum, the central question this conference aims to address is how social cohesion can be achieved in diverse societies.

The organizers welcome theoretical analyses and empirical case studies on the causes, consequences and possibilities of accommodation of complex diversity against the backdrop of the multi-layered system of governance within the European Union. The contributions should outline in what way political and societal cultures, institutional arrangements or public policies contribute to or hinder the accommodation of complex diversity.

The city of Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár/Klausenburg) holds the title of European Youth Capital in 2015. This conference is part of the official program of this project. Hence, the organizers welcome in particular papers that reflect on the conference topics in connection with youth.

The organizers wish to express their satisfaction that the event will be the third in a series of conferences that take place under the auspices of the same institutional cooperation at Cluj, following the MINEUREG  andMIREMIR conferences of 2010 and 2012.

The deadline for applying to the conference is July 1, 2015. Please complete your abstract (250-300 words), together with a brief bio, including your academic/institutional affiliation on the following link >>. Panel proposals including a chair, 4-5 speakers and a discussant are also welcome. The selection of participants will be carried out no later than July 20, 2015.

The conference will be held in Cluj-Napoca, at Sapientia University. The city can be easily reached by a number of low budget airlines. Accommodation is not covered, however, the organizers will offer assistance for participants to find cheaper accommodation facilities.
Participants are kindly requested to pay a registration fee of 50 Euro that includes the conference materials, the coffee-breaks and two receptions. Participation in the Saturday (October 10) excursion, including a dinner and a visit to a local wine cellar, will require a contribution of 30 Euro.

The Lorenzo Natali Journalism Prize 2015

This year’s Lorenzo Natali Media Prize is launched under the motto ‘Today’s stories can change our tomorrow’ and coincides with the 2015 European Year for Development.  In December, the European Commission will once again award journalists for their outstanding reporting on development and poverty eradication.

Journalists committed to defending democracy and human rights can enter a competition.

The Lorenzo Natali Journalism Prize, sponsored by the European Commission, awards excellence in written, radio and broadcast journalism on the theme of development, democracy and human rights around the world. It was established in memory of former European Commissioner Lorenzo Natali.

A grand jury will reward one professional and one amateur journalist from each of the following regions: Africa, the Arab world and the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean and Europe.

Work must have been published or broadcast between Sept. 1, 2014 and Aug. 31, 2015 .

The selected contestants will receive trophies and cash prizes of EUR5,000 (US$5,614). The winners will compete for an additional EUR5,000 Grand Prize during an award ceremony in December 2015.

The deadline is Aug. 31.

The 2015 Summer Institute is an extension of The Workers Lab, a program that invests in building an ecosystem of initiatives that support the next generation worker movement. OVERVIEW

The U.S.-Japan Council’s TOMODACHI Emerging Leaders Program is an interactive, educational program designed to support the next generation of Japanese American leaders.   In 2015, twelve young Japanese American professionals will be selected to attend the U.S.-Japan Council Annual Conference in Tokyo, Japan. The Conference is a forum for education and networking among the highest levels of leadership in business, public policy, academia, journalism and community organizations. By providing access to senior leaders and education on relevant topics, the program aims to motivate participants to promote strong and positive U.S.-Japan relations in their personal and professional lives.

The TOMODACHI Emerging Leaders Program is currently in its sixth year. Past participants have created an alumni network to ensure that the commitment to strengthening U.S.-Japan relations is maintained. Continued engagement following the Conference is expected.

Selected applicants will receive transportation, hotel accommodations and Conference registration. They will also become U.S.-Japan Council Associate Members with the first year’s membership waived (membership is normally by invitation and nomination).

Journalism Fellowship and Scholarship

Funded by the Marguerite Casey Foundation, this offers a new opportunity for emerging and established journalists from ethnic and mainstream media who cover issues on poverty.

The fellowship aims to expand and increase the public’s understanding of poverty in the United States. Nearly 50 million Americans are struggling at or below the poverty line. That means there are 50 million stories to be told from different perspectives.

Journalists can apply for an Equal Voice Journalism Fellowship and write at least one in-depth story or a series of stories that illustrate how language, culture and race influence public attitudes and policy about the poor.

Selected journalists will receive a stipend of $2,250, plus up to $1,000 in travel reimbursement. College-enrolled student journalists may also apply for the Equal Voice Scholarship, which offers $500 and up to $800 for travel.

Now think about the best medium in which to tell your story: video, audio, photography, text/print, graphics — or multimedia. Find an outlet that will agree to publish/distribute your story.

Applicants will need:

A Common Word Among the Youth – Fully Funded Programme

Description

Applications are now open for the ‘A Common Word Among the Youth’ (ACWAY) programme. This is an all-expenses paid programme that includes several training courses, two international conferences, civic activities, a TV documentary and the opportunity to be a part of a unique global network of young people. ‘A Common Word Among the Youth’ is a global initiative that will be led by young people, of different faiths to build bridges of co-existence by means of dialog and action. In ‘A Common Word Among the Youth’, the aim is to develop a multi-religious network of active youth who will deliver grass-root activities such that they become the agents of change for the coming generations.

The programme will consist of:

  • Selection and training of 100 young people from around the world representing the world’s major religions to become advocates of co-existence and religious harmony;
  • Two international conferences to provide opportunities for the young people to network and present their projects and activities to the international community;
  • Grass-root activities delivered by the young people on co-existence and inter-faith relations;
  • An online social media platform for the young people to interact and showcase their projects and activities.

In addition to the above the following pilot campaigns will be arranged:

  • A TV documentary with some of the young leaders involved highlighting the challenges and barriers to co-existence and some of the solutions;
  • A comprehensive media campaign on co-existence and cultural diversity, using TV, Radio, print media as well as social media.

Eligibility

To be eligible applicants have to meet following requirements:

  • Age between 18-35 (on 1st January 2015);
  • Regard oneself as being a follower/believer of one of the following religions;
    • Buddhism;
    • Christianity;
    • Hinduism;
    • Islam;
    • Judaism;
    • Any other religion not mentioned above;
  • Desire for promoting religious and cultural harmony;
  • Experience in community activism and/or inter-religious related activities;
  • An evidenced commitment to effecting positive change. This commitment can come in many forms; ranging from a high level of involvement in community initiatives to social entrepreneurship or from leading responsible business practices to public service;
  • Leadership ability;
  • Ability to generate and articulate impactful ideas;
  • Ability to work as part of a team with people from different backgrounds and religions;
  • Very good command of the English language (all elements of the programme will be conducted in English);
  • Prepared to travel abroad (to the Middle East/Europe/US);
  • Prepared to commit time to the project (attend the training courses, conferences, delivering campaigns and other project related activities). This would span over 12 months in your spare time taking into account your study and/or work commitments;
  • Happy to be included in photos and filming that could be used in social media as well as TV and print media.

The following costs will be covered by ACWAY:

  • Flights;
  • Visa;

The State of Azad Jammu and Kashmir is a youthful state. After the catastrophic Earthquake in 2005, youth of this region has taken the challenge and actively engaged themselves in rebuilding and reorganizing the social structure and life with the cooperation of the international community. They have much to share with and learn from youth around the world on this ongoing journey.

Furthermore, the State of Jammu and Kashmir is known as heaven on earth. Azad Kashmir has a peaceful environment with extensive places of tourist interest to be seen. Azad Jammu and Kashmir, a peaceful, beautiful and full-of-nature place in the world, will also inspires the conference delegates to join hands together for humanity and harmony  while taking full advantage of the entertainment and tourism opportunity in the area.

Youth is more than half of the world’s total population. Youth is supposed to be the leading stakeholder of the planet earth in various aspects. At an individual level young people are playing an important role for development and progress in their communities with new and innovative ideas and practices and effective approaches to addressing issues. This conference brings together youth leaders and activists, and youth leaders from all over the world together to increase their awareness of youth rights and responsibilities, while also providing them opportunities to strengthen their leadership and diplomatic skills. Our goal is to empower youth by providing the tools and knowledge that will help them develop into future leaders who will instigate positive change in our world, and to start a dialogue on global challenges and their solutions to inspire, equip and connect youth to make a difference on the following leading topics:

  • Cross cultural harmony and Peace development

The conference features a variety of activities such as:

The grand opening ceremony on the first evening, where cultural performance, introduction etc. government officials, diplomats, International media persons and Youth leaders will also join.

Plenary sessions, where highly experienced, known and appreciated speakers will be invited to contribute to discussions at the conference. Cultural excursion and City tour, including with a cultural evening with a dinner hosted by Government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Eligibility

Youth leaders from all the continents of the world with a wealth of experience in Youth NGOs and Voluntary Organizations, or with experience in youth activism and active citizenship and having a keen interest in youth empowerment and coordination with youth of Azad Kashmir aged between18-35.

Costs

There is no participation fee but participants have to pay for their own airfare and visa fee. All other costs on the ground, including food and accommodation and local transport, will be covered by IYC 2015.

Application

The selection of the participants will be based on responses to essay questions regarding motivation as well as past and future involvement in issues to be tackled during the Conference.  In addition, the organizers will take a look at your professional and/or educational and/or volunteering background to see how it is positioning you in a way that would help you disseminate what you will learn. Also, the applicants’ level of English proficiency will play a role in the selection process. Lastly, balance in terms of region and gender will be respected in the final selection. Please fill in the online application form and submit it before the 14th June 2015 23:59 (PST). We will inform you about the results of the selection of participants on 05 July.
