Call for Applications: “Faces of Al-Quds” International Photography Contest

The Islamic Conference Youth Forum for Dialogue and Cooperation (ICYF-DC) announces a call for applications on “Faces of Al-Quds” International Youth Photography Contest, held in cooperation with the High Council of Youth and Sports of Palestine; to be held under the programme “Al-Quds Al-Sharif – OIC Youth Capital 2018”.

The “Faces of Al-Quds” seeks to bring together young photographers to demonstrate their vision of Al-Quds al-Sharif, and its importance in terms of Islamic cultural heritage, inter-cultural and inter-civilizational dialogue, and the challenges to its sanctity under Israeli occupation. It will create solidarity with the residents of the holy city, casting light on their lives, as well as the struggles and injustices they contend with on a daily basis. Beyond this, the contest would award recognition to young photographers with promise and talent; empowering and encouraging them to go further in their pursuit of photographic journalism and art.

The “Faces of Al-Quds” International Photography Contest will select “51 Photographs for 51 Years of Al-Quds Occupation” of Israeli occupation to raise consciousness on the stark reality of life in Palestine.

Two application phases will be held for the photography contest.

  • The Early Bird Application deadline is April 1st 2018, with awards announced on April 17th Early Bird Applications will be considered for ‘First-place Winner’ and ‘Best Photograph Award’. Winning entries will be featured in exhibitions in Palestine, the 4th Islamic Conference of Youth and Sports Ministers in Baku, Azerbaijan, and across other OIC member states and world capitals.
  • The Best Awards Application deadline begins on August 1st 2018, with the Awards Ceremony to take place on the OIC Youth Day, September 3rd 2018.

Following the contest, the remainder of submissions will be posted weekly on social media to international audiences for the remainder of the year.

CONTEST THEMES

  1. “Al-Quds al-Sharif: Cradle of Civilizations”

Photographs of cultural, civilizational or religious significance, scenes and sites, taken in the holy city of Al-Quds that capture the spiritual, historical and civilizational depths of the ancient city.

  1. “Al-Quds Al-Sharif: City under Siege”

Photographs of the difficulties and challenges of life; specifically in visiting al-Quds sanctuaries under Israeli occupation; that capture and document challenges to the sanctity, soul and religious character of al-Quds al-Sharif.

  1. “Faces of Al-Quds”

Photographs of the daily life of residents of al-Quds al-Sharif under Israeli occupation; that capture their spirit of resilience, challenges, perseverance, griefs and hopes.

CONTEST POLICY & ELIGIBILITY

  1. This contest is open to youth of all faiths and nationalities between the ages of 18 and 35. Non-professional photographers are particularly encouraged to participate.
  2. Participation in the contest is open to all and free of charge.
  3. To make a mobile phone submissions, post your photo with the following Hashtag: #AlQudsOICYouthCapital2018#AlQuds51for51, tagging the Faces of al-Quds account: instagram.com/facesofalquds, and sending the photo and your full name by Direct Message.
  4. There is no limit regarding the number of submissions.
  5. Following registration, photographers should upload their photos at the following registration form (goo.gl/rQXi7j), no later than 1st April 2018 at 23:59 al-Quds Local Time for the Early Bird Application, and no later than August 1st 2018 at 23:59 al-Quds Local Time for the Best Awards Application.
  6. Under all contest themes, monochrome and color photos must be uploaded as a file with DPI up to 72 pixels in JPG format and RGB colour model. The longest side should be 1500 pixels with a ratio of 2*3 or 1*1. The Photoshop output level of the photos should not be less than 10. Panorama photos are not accepted.
  7. No photo geometric, watermarking or structural editing is allowed. The photos can only be edited up to the extent that the originality of the photo is not altered. Recoloring, adjusting contrast, brightness and cropping photos are allowed if the originality of the photo is not altered.
  8. Entries cannot be submitted elsewhere.
  9. The photographers whose photos are selected and printed in the contest booklet are conferred award recognition, and granted copyright (excluding the selected finalist works).
  10. Selected entries for the exhibition will be put on display throughout different events around the world.
  11. By submission of the image, the applicant accepts the terms of the contest. They are considered the sole owner of the photos. The entrant is accountable for any legal or penal consequences arising from copyright infringement on the part of them.

SELECTION PROCESS

An international jury who will select winners will judge the entries submitted by these photographers. The jury’s decisions are final and binding in all respects and not subject to appeal. Submitted entries will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • Originality and creativity of expression
  • Photo composition
  • Quality of execution

In 2018, the Taco Bell Foundation will be awarding $3 million in Live Más Scholarships. $1 million will be awarded through our new applicant program, $1.5 million through our renewal program for previous recipients, and $500,000 through our program for Taco Bell restaurant employees.

The Abrams Nieman Fellowship for Local Investigative Journalism

The Abrams Nieman Fellowship for Local Investigative Journalism was created to bolster deeply reported local and regional news stories in underserved communities throughout the United States.

Funded by the Abrams Foundation, the fellowship in the 2018-19 academic year will fund up to three Nieman Fellowships for U.S. journalists who cover news in areas of the United States where resources are scarce. The fellowship additionally will fund up to nine months of fieldwork at the fellow’s home news organization after two semesters at Harvard – or in the case of freelance journalists, a newsroom partner. During the fieldwork period, the Abrams Nieman Fellows may expand or develop an investigative project that will provide better, more in-depth coverage of issues important to the communities they serve.

This pilot fellowship program grows out of a shared belief by the Nieman Foundation and the Abrams Foundation that public service fact-based local and regional investigative journalism is a vital component in a healthy democracy and is in need of new and creative means of support.

At Harvard, the Abrams Nieman Fellows will acquire new knowledge and skills, broaden their understanding of issues important to their communities, build leadership potential and develop an extensive network of expert contacts and potential collaborators in preparation of their fieldwork. The fellowship in broader terms is designed to strengthen journalism in some newsrooms that lack the means to support deep investigations important to local communities.

During their fieldwork, the Abrams Nieman Fellows will work on a public service reporting project for their home news organization and participate in specialized journalism education. During this time, the Abrams Nieman Fellows will return to Harvard University periodically and may create materials and content for Nieman Foundation publications. The fellows may also learn new skills such as audience development and engagement; database journalism; digital storytelling; FOIA requests and research, narrative reporting; and investigative tools and techniques.

The Abrams Nieman Fellowship additionally will provide opportunities for the fellows to build a support network of local journalists looking to collaborate on long-term reporting projects. Journalists who apply for the fellowship may be working on a project they wish to expand in some new way, or make plans to develop a new project during their fieldwork. Nieman alumni, many of whom have produced award-winning investigative work in small markets, will serve as advisors to the Abrams Nieman Fellows.

Candidates for the fellowship must be working journalists with at least five years of full-time media experience. Print, radio, TV and online editors and journalists are all eligible, as are freelancers. The application deadline for the 2018-19 Abrams Nieman Fellowships is Feb. 15, 2018. Applicants for the Abrams Nieman Fellowship will be required to provide a short (no more than 500 words) fieldwork proposal.

Those who work within a news organization must request a letter of support for the fieldwork project from their employer. The employer also must state the intent of the news organization to permit the applicant to work on the project for the duration of the fieldwork period. If the immediate supervisor who is writing one of the three letters of recommendation will also submit the letter of support, that person may do so within a single letter.

Freelance applicants are not required to have a letter of support but will be asked to indicate potential partner organizations for their fieldwork project.

Description

The Angkor Photo Workshop is an annual tuition-free professional workshop aimed at nurturing emerging talent from Asia. Each year, 30 participants are selected from across the region to join us in Siem Reap, Cambodia, for an intensive week-long workshop conducted by international professional photographers who volunteer their time and expertise to be a part of this initiative.

Participants will expected to complete one photo story each during the workshop, and will be guided by their tutors through all stages – from conceptualizing story ideas and refining your photographic approach, to improving your techniques and the final, important step of picture editing. We believe in diversity and originality, and we want you to develop your own unique photographic style and vision.

Eligibility

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • Applicants must be either a student or professional photographer of Asian nationality with less than 5 years of professional experience.
  • The workshop will be conducted in English.
  • Participants will have to bring their own digital DSLR camera and laptop.
  • Participants should be able to use basic photo editing software (eg: Lightroom, Photoshop, Aperture etc.)

Costs

  • The workshop is tuition-free, with no application fee.
  • Accommodation will be provided from 2nd December – 12th December, 2017. (Checkout on 13th December)
  • Participants have to make their own travel arrangements to Siem Reap, Cambodia.
  • Visa fees and transport expenses are not provided.

Stratcom Youth Academy 2017 is a unique possibility for future leaders to raise awareness about the concept and current trends of strategic communications and the role of media in the modern politics. The Academy will be taking place simultaneously with one of the leading strategic communications forums in Europe organized by the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence “The Riga StratCom Dialogue 2017” (www.rigstratcomdialogue.org).The Riga StratCom Dialogue 2017 will bring together experts, policy-makers, academics, and practitioners to create an in-depth discussion on how rapid changes in communications are affecting all sectors of our global society. This is one of the leading conferences currently focusing on strategic communications issues of utmost importance to NATO allies.

Rapid development of internet technologies has not only provided policy makers with numerous opportunities to communicate with society but also posed new challenges of sustaining domestic and international peace and security. Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, possible interference in the election processes in the USA and European countries, growth of populism and far right ideologies and also the activities of DAESH in the internet domain to radicalize and recruit have forced policy and decision makers to reflect on the ways how different media platforms can be used to achieve goals that are aimed against democratic states. Disinformation environment (propaganda and fake/biased news websites and networks used to distribute this disinformation) has helped gain control over large groups of people and create obstacles for national and transnational security.

Throughout four days, participants will have a chance to enhance their understanding of pivotal aspects of strategic communication, engage in workshops and meet and interact with prominent political and public figures by partly attending “The Riga StratCom Dialogue 2017” on 5-6 July, 2017.

The topics of the Stratcom Youth Academy 2017 will cover:

  • Concept of strategic communication and its current trends;
  • Russia’s propaganda – from soft power tools to annexation of Crimea;
  • Election information wars – rise of populism and far right wing in Europe and the USA;
  • Media platforms in the hands of DAESH – challenges and opportunities;
  • topics covered by the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence conference “The Riga StratCom Dialogue 2017”.

Eligibility

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • 20-27 years old;
  • Active members or volunteers in any ATA/YATA chapter (highly preferable);
  • Fluent in English;
  • Interested in foreign policy and security issues;
  • Highly motivated to attend Stratcom Youth Academy 2017 and “The Riga StratCom Dialogue.” conference.

Costs

Participation fee: 200 EUR that includes:

  • Accommodation for 5 nights in Albert Hotel (2 persons in one room);

Join the OpenVillage/LOTE6 festival 2017 in Brussels

We believe that the future of health and social care is community-based and participatory. We are committed to the idea that care should not necessarily be handed down from institutions to the people but can emerge organically from the people according to their needs.

The OpenVillage Festival is a highly participatory festival showcasing working solutions and demos produced by community members, as well as pathways for working together towards their sustainability. It will take place on October 19-21, 2017 in Brussels and represents the culmination of the OpenCare 18 month research that involves hundreds of original initiatives.

Aiming to deepen community collaboration, during April – May 2017, the SCImPULSE Foundation will appoint 3 “students” to support communication and engagement for the OpenVillage. We use “students” in the Latin sense, of people that will apply themselves to the subject, as fellows of SCImPULSE Foundation, and not in any sense as an indication of career status.

Eligibility

We will consider individuals who have demonstrated an interest in and alignment with Diy Welfare (referred to as “opencare”) in the following ways (each item will receive a score from 0 the minimum, to 5 the maximum, which will be summed to define the final score used to choose the winners):

  • are registered on edgeryders.eu and have contributed a story on the OpenCare community page. NB: All the stories already submitted in 2016 and 2017 are being considered.
  • are operating at the grassroots level or are heavily interacting with such groups
  • Are open in their work, use of methodology, technology, results (public and transparent communication, open processes for participation, commons licensing, open source code etc.)
  • their contribution is validated in positive responses by their peers in the opencare community (as seen from the Comments section)
  • have storytelling and content production skills for presenting the opencare initiatives to various community groups and audiences
  • demonstrate willingness to collaborate with others and use online environments for communication, engagement, documentation of work and social media

Fellowship

  • A bursary appointment: Up to 15000 Euro to reimburse your working time, distributed on the basis of winners’ financial needs
  • A travel budget: Up to 5000 Euro, to be authorized in advance by due justification.

Call for Applications – educational project called “In Between?

European Network Remembrance and Solidarity is launching a recruitment process for an ongoing educational project called In Between?, which aims to encourage the young generation of Europeans to explore 20th-century history by speaking with those who lived it. Participants are given a unique opportunity to gain theoretical and practical experience in documenting oral stories.

This time, participants will travel to Berlin, Mostar, Vojvodina and the Polish-Lithuanian borderland in July, and to the Prespa Lakes region, the Albanian-Montenegrin borderland, the Hungarian-Romanian borderland and the Spanish-French borderland in September. The call for applications closes on 8 May 2017 for the Summer Edition and 17 July 2017 for the Autumn Edition.

The call is open to all candidates age 18-25, including students and freelancers representing various areas of interest that may include history, cultural anthropology, sociology and audiovisual arts, among others. After being selected, they will take part in interdisciplinary workshops (Summer Edition: 1-5 July , Autumn Edition: 13-17 September) and study visits (Summer Edition: 6-13 July, Autumn Edition: 18-25 September).

After 4-day workshops in Warsaw participants will have learned the theoretical basics of interview methodology, digital video-camera operation, photography, digitalisation of visual materials, archiving and historical context. Then, they will be divided into groups of six to travel to border towns and other localities for seven days. During their stay they will conduct and document interviews with local inhabitants. Recollections, sound and video recordings, photographs, letters as well as scanned documents and other items reflecting the daily life of the communities will constitute a basis for building accounts of their travel that will be shared with historical institutions and local archives, including the National Digital Archive and the Virtual Shtetl (Museum of the History of Polish Jews).

Recorded on family photographs and stories, collected documentary material reflecting the past of the eight European regions – with their cultural and historical complexities – will become the theme of a project closing conference. The event to be held in Berlin in December 2017 will feature debates with cultural anthropologists, historians and oral history researchers.

Factors to be considered in the recruitment process include a candidate’s motivation to participate in the project, openness and readiness to cooperate. Knowledge of English and one of the languages spoken in a selected region is a must.

Candidates from Europe and North America (EUNA) and from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) can now apply until Sunday May 21st 2017 11:59pm EST to participate in the 2017 edition of the UNAOC Fellowship Program.

The theme of the Fellowship 2017 is “The role of civil society and the media in combatting hatred and fostering inclusion”.

To be selected, eligible candidates must demonstrate strong interest in intercultural dialogue and professional achievements in the fields of media and/or civil society.

The goal of the Fellowship is to provide participants with first hand exposure to cultural diversity, while interacting with a wide range of local actors and partners. In every country they visit, participants will acquire crucial comprehension tools to help them understand the plurality of their host country’s culture, politics, society, religion, and media.

Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowships

Five Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowships in the amount of $25,800 each will be awarded to young poets in the U.S. through a national competition sponsored by the Poetry Foundation, publisher of Poetry magazine. Established in 1989 by the Indianapolis philanthropist Ruth Lilly, the fellowships are intended to encourage the further study and writing of poetry.

Submissions will be accepted from March 1 – April 30 of this year, via the online submissions system.

  • Application materials sent via e-mail or standard mail will not be considered.
  • Previously published poems may be included in your application.

HOW TO APPLY:
FIRST, you must assemble your application materials as a SINGLE file (acceptable file types are pdf, doc, docx, txt, rtf, wpf). This document must include:

  • An approximately 250-word introduction to your work (not to exceed one page).
  • Ten pages of poems, in standard font and size (such as Times New Roman, 12pt). You may include multiple poems on one page, but the total pages of poems must not exceed ten.
  • Publication list. (Optional. If you choose to include it, please do so as the last page of your document.)
  • Name this document [LAST NAME]_[FIRST NAME].doc (example: Doe_John.doc)

THEN, proceed to our online submissions manager where you can upload your application.
Finalists will be notified by e-mail by August 1.
Winners will be announced on September 1.
Payments to winners will be subject to the completion of IRS Form W-9, including a valid TIN or SSN.

About the Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowship Program
Established in 1989 by Ruth Lilly to encourage the further writing and study of poetry, the Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Poetry Fellowship program has dramatically expanded since its inception. Until 1995, university writing programs nationwide each nominated one student poet for a single fellowship; from 1996 until 2007, two fellowships were awarded. In 2008 the competition was opened to all U.S. poets between 21 and 31 years of age, and the number of fellowships increased to five, totaling $75,000. In 2013, the Poetry Foundation received a generous gift from the Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Memorial Fund to create the Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowships, which increased the fellowship amount from $15,000 to $25,800.
