CrossCulture Internships funding programme (Germany / Islamic countries)

With its CrossCulture Internships funding programme, the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen ifa (Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations) is advocating intercultural exchange and the strengthening of networks between Germany and Islamic world as a partner of the German Federal Foreign Office.

The programme enables internships for young professionals and volunteers from the participating countries and from Germany. International experience is gained and intercultural competence developed through work stays in another culture. CrossCulture internships open up and strengthen the exchange between people, institutions and cultures and thus enable an enhanced partnership between Germany and Islamic countries. Regional particularities are taken into account through the subdivision into three regional modules:

  • Pakistan, Bangladesh
  • Central Asia
  • Other Islamic countries (particularly in the Middle East, North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula)
Please note that due to violent conflict situation and political instability, scholarships for applicants from Afghanistan and Syria are not allocated in the year 2014.

Belarus in Focus Journalism Competition

Description

Belarus in Focus is the third edition of a competition for journalists and others writing about Belarus for international media. By holding this competition each year, the organizers wish to encourage journalists and editors to pay attention to ongoing events and trends in Belarus – political, economic, social, and cultural.

By creating a place for exchange and debate, the aim is to contribute to journalistic understanding about Belarus and, consequently, the level of interest among the international public about events taking place in Belarus – a country on the E.U’s eastern border. 

‘Belarus in Focus’ is held by Solidarity with Belarus Information Office (Warsaw) in cooperation with Press Club Belarus and Press Club Polska (Warsaw). Information partners include: Belarusian PEN Centre (Minsk), Civic Belarus (Prague), European Federation of Journalists (Brussels), TeleKritika (Kiev), the Network for Reporting on Eastern Europe (Berlin), Office for a Democratic Belarus (Brussels), and Ostgruppen (Sweden). ’Belarus in Focus’ is kindly supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers and NIRAS.

Eligibility

The competition is open to anyone who has published an article about Belarus for non-Belorussian media in 2013. There are no restrictions on nationality, citizenship, or place of residence. There is no age bracket either. Belorussian nationals are particularly encouraged to enter. The competition is not open to employees of Solidarity for Belarus Information Office or their family members, or anyone else directly connected to the Competition.

In ’Belarus in Focus’, there are two categories:

  • Professional journalists: A professional journalist is understood as a journalist who has worked for more than 3 years as a journalist, or other professionals who have published for over 3 years in media.
  • Beginner journalists: A beginner journalist is understood as a journalist who has worked for less than 3 years as a journalist, or other professionals/students who have published for less than 3 years in media.

Prizes

The following prizes are available:

  • Professional journalists: x 3 prizes of 500 EUR;
  • Beginner journalists: x 3 prizes of 300 EUR.

In addition, six participants will be invited to attend a two-day workshop together with journalists from independent Belorussian media. Sessions will be led by media experts, including jury members. It will be held in Warsaw in spring 2014. Travel expenses, food, and accommodation will be covered for those invited to attend the workshop.

Application

The competition is open for entries until midnight on Monday 20 January 2014 (n.b. your article should have been published in 2013).

Articles that fulfill these criteria will be accepted into the competition:

  • It is an article about Belarus published online or in print (radio and TV reports will be accepted if they have been published as an accompanying article on a website).
  • It has been published between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2013.
  • It has been published in media outside of Belarus whose main target audience is non-Belorussian.

Entries will be evaluated by a jury made up of different nationalities and from different backgrounds. You do not need to provide a translation into English if your article is in a language read by at least one jury member. This year, the languages are: Danish, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Polish, and Ukrainian.

If your article is accepted into the second round, it will be translated into English for the other jury members. At the same time, it is strongly recommend that you submit your article in English so that the competition audience may appreciate what you are writing about and so that it may be considered by more than one jury member in the first round.

Winners and finalists will be announced on the competition website and contacted by Monday 17 February 2014. The finalists will be invited to a two-day workshop in spring 2014, in Warsaw. Winners will be awarded at a ceremony to be held during the journalist workshop.

New York Times ‘Year in Rap’ Student Contest

Quick: What rhymes with “Affordable Care Act”? “Edward Snowden”? “His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge”? If you can’t come up with at least one answer, you might want to start brainstorming, because the Year in Rap Student Contest is back.

Along with their annual partner, Flocabulary, (creators of the Week in Rap, the Year in Rap and other educational songs, videos and resources for K-12), The New York Times invites you to post your entry by Jan. 7, 2014.

If you’ve participated before, the rules are pretty much the same: just write an informed, engaging 12- to-16-line rap about some aspect of this year’s news.

To help, they’ll be publishing their usual end-of-year quiz and list of 2013 retrospectives that can help you remember the highs and the lows. Both will be available by Dec. 23, so stay tuned — or get ahead now by going back through their weekly news quizzes to see how well you do.

Teachers, they have also posted Flocabulary’s lesson plan and rubric to help in guiding your students through the rap-writing process.

The Contest Rules: Write Your Own ‘Year in Rap’

The rap should be 12 to 16 lines long. Students should choose at least four important New York Times stories from one of the news categories listed below.

It’s fine to focus on a smaller topic found within a section in The Times. For example, you can write a rap based on just the government shutdown rather than the whole range of national or political news this year. Or, you might focus on 2013 movies rather than covering other news from the Arts section. But you should also feel free to include as many, and as wide a range, of news stories from a particular section as you like. (More about narrowing your choices can be found in this section of the lesson plan.)

The rap should be original and must follow Learning Network commenting standards, which means no profanity or vulgar language.

Eligibility

Submissions must be from students from 13 to 19 years old. (Update:Students can come from anywhere in the world.) No last names please, but an initial is fine, as is a school or class code of some type. (For example, “Ethan G. CHS112.”)

Submissions are allowed from partners and teams as well as from individuals — just remember to submit all of your names when you post your rhyme. (This year we’ll judge all entries the same.)

One submission per student, please. If you’re submitting as part of a team, you should not also submit as an individual.

Raps must be submitted as comments on this post HERE by 5 p.m. Eastern time on Jan. 7. If you have questions about the contest, please feel free to post them in the comments section as well, and they’ll answer you there.

Center co-directors needed to help children in Kenya, Thailand and Indonesia

If you’re looking for a long-term volunteering opportunity, the International Humanity Foundation is offering you the chance to help in its children’s home in Nakuru, Kenya; Chiang Rai, Thailand; and in education centers and children’s homes in Bali, Jakarta, Medan and Banda Aceh, Indonesia.

IHF is looking for hard-working, committed volunteers to help in its children’s home in Kenya. IHF provides education, and in some cases, homes, to children in need in six centers across Indonesia, Thailand and Kenya. IHF has no central headquarters; each center is a product of its environment and follows the cultural code and norms of its host country.

The Kenya center is a children’s home and also provides emergency relief to the surrounding community. This is the biggest IHF center, with approximately 100 kids. The kids are from the marginalised Pokot tribe, whose conditions are amongst the worse in Kenya. Living conditions in this region are harsh, and we provide basic needs such as a home, food, and access to education to children who would otherwise go without. They also run livestock donation projects and other initiatives to relieve the extreme poverty where they can.

The Thailand center is a home for hill-tribe children. Children from this marginalised community come to our center for a stable home and a chance for an education.

IHF has four centers in Indonesia, in Bali, Jakarta, Medan and Banda Aceh. Their Jakarta and Aceh centers provide homes to a small number of children, while all centers offer English, math and computer classes to disadvantaged children. With a population of over 240 million, Indonesia’s public education system often fails to give children a chance to escape the poverty they were born into. IHF fills that gap and give kids a chance to aim higher.

At the centers, you will divide your time between caring for the children and working on international tasks. IHF is a grassroots, all-volunteer organisation with no central office, so all administration work is done in center. All volunteers manage one or more of their international task teams such as university relations, fundraising and media; working together online with volunteers in other centers. You will be assigned according to your experience. You must possess excellent time management skills.

Eligibility

Those who are secure without the comforts of home gain the most from this valuable opportunity. They are looking for applicants preferably with:

  • A related university degree; eg. in social studies, language, teaching, medicine, law, social work
  • Experience abroad; travel, working or volunteering
  • 1-2 years working experience in any field
  • Experience with teaching and/or children

Fluency in English, both written and spoken is essential. Those interested in volunteering at an IHF centre are required to complete a level of pre-trip duties in order to gain an understanding of how our organization functions.

Costs

Volunteers must commit to serve at least a year at the center. Basic accommodation and food is provided by IHF. You are a volunteer at the center, and all local tasks completed are done so without pay. Volunteers who commit to serving one year or more will receive a small monthly stipend. It is broken down as follows:-

First 3 months: Training period – $20 per month

3-6 months: Assistant co-Director – $50 per month

6-9 months: Co-Director – $80 per month

9-12 months: Co-Director – $100 per month

This stipend results only from the international online work; not from any local tasks. After one year there is the opportunity to become a full Director.

Strict IHF Policy: These stipends are fixed. They will not be raised for more experienced applicants, and everyone will be upgraded according to the timeframes outlined above, and no sooner. There are no exceptions to this, regardless of what may be the situation in the centre. We are an all-Volunteer organization and training and hands-on experience is paramount.

STEP Traineeships are an outstanding opportunity to gain practical legal experience and plunge into the culture of another country. STEP Beyond Travel Grants for Artists

Description

STEP Beyond Travel grants fund up and coming artists and cultural workers – giving priority to individuals up to 35 years and/or in the first 10 years of their career – to travel between EU and countries bordering the EU.

The travel grants support individual artists and cultural workers travelling across borders in a wider European space, to explore, network and set up new collaborations. They also see the travel scheme as a tool for professional development, ranging from planning, fundraising and application to payment procedures.

Eligible travelers should present a well-prepared travel itinerary and have a clear plan of activities, with at least one committed partner or host in the destination country. Funded travel should represent a starting point for continued collaboration and the resulting projects should have some impact on the local/regional arts and culture scene and/or policy-making.

They especially welcome applications from the following countries: Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Georgia, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Moldova, Morocco, Palestinian Territories, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey and the Ukraine.

STEP Beyond Travel Grants from/to the countries of South Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia) and Turkey are jointly funded with the Open Society Foundations (OSF).

  • artist or cultural worker of any contemporary artistic or cultural discipline (individual or representing a cultural or artistic independent organisation)

Grant

STEP Beyond Travel Grants are only meant for contributing towards international travel ticket expenses. Grants range from €250 to €700 depending on the country you are departing from and the country you will travel to.

International Art Competition in Taipei, Taiwan

The Taiwan International Contemporary Artist Association has organized one of Asia’s top art contests, the International Art Competition (IAC), since 2011. The organizer is now combining IAC together with Art Revolution Taipei (ART), the most important platform of art exchange in Taiwan, to promote individual artists to the international market. The combined power of both of these unrivaled art outlets will result in more opportunities of sponsorship, exhibition and sale.

Making a hit with 9o percent of the exhibiting artists having sales during the show, with great support from world-class high-powered collectors, Art Revolution Taipei will launch its 3rd edition at Taipei World Trade Center Hall 3. Carrying further its dual curatorial axes – “presenting artists at the center of the exhibition stage” and “designing the entire art fair as a colossal artwork” – the 3rd ART features “My Revolution” as its annual theme.

The entire exhibition will be designed into nine sections: Curatorial Classics, Taiwan Contemporary Art, China Contemporary Art, International Contemporary Art, New York Contemporary Art Fund, International Artist Juries Competition, Art with Entrepreneurs, Art and Design, and Art Your Compassion. It brings more distinguished artists to participate than before, with 254 artists from 40 countries.

Eligibility

The contest is open to all artists over 18 years old and each artist may submit up to two artworks for consideration — 2D artworks, created with Oil or Acrylic and completed no earlier than 2010. No specific theme is required.

Award

All accepted entries will be exhibited for sale in the ART 2014 fair between 16 and 20 April, 2014 and one artist will be sponsored a free exhibition unit (9m2) on the A.R.T. 2015 fair.

Internship at WTO

The WTO Secretariat maintains a limited internship programme for post-graduate university students wishing to gain practical experience and deeper knowledge of the multilateral trading system. Only a limited number of such internship posts is available.

As part of the internship programme, we also offer the WTO Accessions Internship Programme
(http://www.wto.org/english/thewto_e/acc_e/acc_internship_e.htm), sponsored by the Government of China, within the framework of the MOU on the “China’s LDCs and Accessions Programme” established in July 2011. Four internship positions are available on an annual basis under this Programme.

Interested candidates should follow the procedures and conform to the eligibility criteria set out below.

Intake to the programme is on a continuing basis, with no specific recruitment period. There is no opening or closing date for applications.
Duration:  Up to 24 weeks.
General Functions

Assignments given to interns are intended to enhance interns’ knowledge and understanding of the WTO and of trade policy more generally. However, the needs of the Division recruiting an intern will be paramount in determining the precise nature of assignments.

RULES AND PROCEDURES FOR INTERNS
Eligibility:

Interns are recruited from among nationals of WTO Members and countries and customs territories engaged in accession negotiations.

Interns will have completed their undergraduate studies in a relevant discipline (e.g. economics, law, political science, international relations), and shall have completed at least one year of their postgraduate studies.

The minimum age for an intern shall be 21 years and the maximum age 30 years.

A roster of suitable candidates is maintained from which interns are selected. In addition to the regular internship programme, the need may also arise to recruit interns at short notice for particular tasks. These recruits will also be drawn from the roster. Names will not be maintained on the roster for longer than one year.
Contractual Terms and Conditions:

Paid interns receive a daily allowance of CHF 60 (including week-ends and official holidays falling within the selected period). No other remuneration of any kind shall be paid.

Internships take place in Geneva, Switzerland only. Travel expenses to and from Geneva cannot be paid by the WTO, and such travel is not covered by the Organization’s insurance. Interns are also responsible for their own insurance cover for illness and accidents while they are working at the WTO.

The WTO may also employ unpaid interns funded from external sources.

Internships are generally of a duration of up to 24 weeks, the length of the internship depending on the project the interns is requested to work on, and on the needs of each Division. The granting of an internship does not entail in any way the right to an extension thereof nor to a vacancy in another part of the Secretariat. Interns may nevertheless apply to external vacancies. Internships can start at any time during the year.

An internship can be terminated by the WTO Secretariat or by the intern with one week’s notice.

The Director responsible for an intern will write an evaluation report at the end of the internship, and the intern will also be required to evaluate the internship. Both evaluations will be placed on file.

An agreement will be established between the intern and the Director of the Human Resources Division, specifying the conditions of service and details of any remuneration.

Interns are treated like secretariat staff members during their stay insofar as their obligations, in particular with regard to confidentiality.
