The Girls Impact the World Film Festival, presented by the Harvard College Social Innovation Collaborative and Connecther, is a film festival and scholarship program for high school and undergraduate college students.

The festival accepts short films that either raise awareness or propose solutions to a variety of global women’s issues, including maternal health, microfinance initiatives, child marriage, sex-trafficking and poverty alleviation.

Films must be 3 to 5 minutes long and can be narrative, documentary, investigative reporting, music video, animation or curated film (film collage).

Eligibility

Applicants must be 25 or under and currently enrolled undergraduates or full-time high school students.

Prize

The festival will award US$20,000 in prizes.

Get involved in LADDER Citizen Journalist Initiative

The WHO & the WHAT? 

• If you are a journalism lover and you practice it  – or would be interested to practice – in a non-professional way (maybe you write on a local paper, or you run a blog, or you are part of a university radio, or… you tell us!)

• If you are interested on global issues (including migration, human rights, development, poverty eradication, citizens’ participation, youth engagement, solidarity, cohesion and mutual understanding, women’s rights, multi-culturalism etc) from a local/national/European/global perspective

• If you are tightly connected to JEF Europe (you may be a volunteer, a member, but not a staff member)

• If you are a citizen of any age (youngsters most welcome!) from the EU and its Neighborhood

… then apply to the initiative! 

The project LADDER will create a network of citizen journalists (approx 50 people) from all over the enlarged Europe (all the EU countries represented by LADDER partners) who are already or wish to be involved, non professionally, in journalistic activities covering development issues

The WHY? 

We are setting up this network of citizens’ journalist because we believe that citizens are the CORE element of every democracy and society. Covering/ Writing about development issues is one thing, being promoted is another. We believe in your skills & want to support your coverage! JEF will select 2 citizen journalists, who will benefit from a dedicated support to promote their work (eg: booking a space on a newspaper, online blog, promoting the articles within its network, participation in local events etc).

In order to strengthen & promote the citizen journalist network and ensure its operational capacity, a dedicated training will be delivered, which will gather all selected citizen journalists. The trainers will include both ALDA experts, and external experts, and will enhance communication & journalism skills as well as development related topics knowledge. The date and venue of the training are under discussion and will be communicated once agreed.The costs for participation (travel & accommodation) for the selected participants will be covered by LADDER.

The citizen journalist network of LADDER will operate during the three-year project, until its completion in December 2017, and the pieces produced by the citizen journalists (interviews, articles, videos, cartoons, blog articles, etc.) will be widely disseminated through the communication channels of the partner of in country of origin, but also by ALDA and other LADDER organisations. In order to ensure a stronger impact and sustainability of the initiatives, actions will be put in place to make the network a permanent platform for communication of global and development issues.

To apply, interested people have to contact JEF, and we will select the citizen journalist and communicate the names to ALDA, the project leader. It is important that citizen journalists are in tight connection with JEF, as they will bring in their voice, instances, and perspective. Therefore, volunteers and members are ideal candidates; staff members are instead not eligible.

The project “LADDER – Local Authorities as Drivers for Development Education and Raising awareness” started in January 2015 and will be running until December 2017 (36-month duration), including 46 organisations across 35 countries, coordinated by ALDA.

It’s an EU-funded project that intends to promote the action of Local Authorities & Civil Society to work on development education, that is raising awareness & promoting engagement of citizens on global issues (human rights, good governance, tolerance, eradication of poverty, development, mutual understanding & multi-culturalism, social cohesion, migration etc)

Description

iAniMagic is an annual animation contest of Animation Desk. Your mission is to create a unique animation that showcases your ability to, pardon the pun, think outside the box. You’ll need to use the template provided in the first and last frames of your animation, the rest is up to what your mind can muster up.

 

You can download the template and submit your works from Animation Desk Cloud (iPhone/iPad), Animation Desk for Android, and Animation Desk for Windows. Each submission should be between 5 – 10 sec.. Travel Photography Scholarship 2015

WorldNomads are accepting applications from aspiring travel photographers around the world for its Travel Photography Scholarship competition, offering the chance to go on a photography assignment in Nepal and be mentored by a professional photographer. One winning photographer will be awarded with a 10-day all-expenses-paid trip to Nepal and professional mentorship from travel photographer Richard I’Anson. On the assignment, scheduled for 7-18 February 2016, under the mentorship of Richard I’Anson, the winning photographer will obtain invaluable mentoring and hands-on experience in everything from shot set up, technique and composition. Most of all, the winner will be experiencing what it’s like to be a photographer on-assignment.

Eligibility

All competitors should meet following requirements:

  • Any non-professional can apply – this is open photography students or keen amateurs/pro-amateurs looking build a career in travel photography.
  • The scholarship is open to all nationalities (subject to obtaining a visa to enter Nepal); however, you must have an exceptionally high degree of proficiency in written English;
  • Minimum age 18 by the application deadline (25 November 2015);
  • Competitors must have a current, valid passport and you must be available as per the dates set out. Please note these dates are not changeable in any way;
  • Competitors must be fit and healthy as moderate levels of physical work are involved as well as a number of late nights;
  • All applicants should be an exceptional photographers with a lust for adventure, have a strong desire to be mentored and grow their photographic knowledge and skills, an ambition to forge a career in travel photography.

Social Impact Media Video Contest

Filmmakers and activists can submit videos that inspire activism, compassion and social transformation.

The Social Impact Media Awards (SIMA) is accepting entries for its international documentary and educational media competition and showcase, funded by documentary companies and human rights organizations.

The categories are feature, short and impact video. Feature documentaries must be a minimum of 40 minutes, shorts a maximum of 39 minutes and impact videos 2 to 20 minutes long.

All (non-English language) documentaries and educational impact videos must be subtitled in English.

Winners in each category will receive from US$500 to US$1,000.

The early bird deadline is Sept. 26. The regular deadline is Oct. 9. The entry fee starts at US$5.

OECD Youth Poster Competition

Description

To create a poster reflecting the challenge of fixing government to include more voices in public decisions and help address growing income inequality. Using the powerful poster format, young people are invited to express their unique views and ideas on how we can change the rules so that everyone can have access to better public services (such as schools and healthcare) and a better life (through less unemployment, better jobs and job satisfaction, less discrimination and more opportunities for all). The poster should be motivating and visual and they should address one of the following themes:

  • Giving young people a voice in the government decision process;
  • Opportunity for all! (Everyone deserves access to good schools, good health care, good jobs, a decent salary, a healthy environment, etc…);
  • Including more voices and more diverse voices in government decisions creates societies that are fairer to all;
  • Improving everyone’s well-being results in a stronger society than just concentrating on more material wealth (GDP);
  • The negative effects of income inequality on society;
  • An idea for reducing income inequality;
  • Changing the rules to help everyone have access to a better life;
  • Encouraging government to listen to everyone, not just to those with the most power and influence;
  • Getting involved in school, neighbourhood, community or larger organisations to make things better, such as providing better services.

Eligibility

All competitors and their posters must meet following requirements:

  • For the poster entry to be eligible, applicants must be 15-25 years old during the period of this competition (Competition closes on 16 October 2015);
  • If any words are used in the poster that are not in English or French, a translation must be provided;
  • A poster must not portray violence, profanity or direct attacks on individuals or organisations. Offensive entries will be disqualified;
  • A poster must not infringe on any third party rights.

Prize

Winning posters will be displayed in an exclusive poster gallery during the OECD Ministerial Meeting in Helsinki on 27-28 October 2015 bringing together ministers and high-level officials from countries around the world.

The Sakdoc Workshop for Female Documentary Filmmakers

Deadline:  25 September 2015
Open to: women filmmakers and producers from the Caucasus region
Venue: 19 – 20 October 2015 in Tbilisi, Georgia

Description

Swedish filmmakers Karin Ekberg and Johanna Berhardson and Sakdoc Film, with the support of The Swedish Institute, organize a workshop for female documentary filmmakers from Caucasus. The workshop aims to empower female filmmakers in the beginning of their career and give them skills and confidence to reach an international level. The workshop also aims to raise an awareness of gender equality behind and in front of the camera, and a longterm change of attitudes.

Eligibility

The workshop will be help in the frame of Tbilisi International Documentary Film Festival (Cinedoc) and is open for semiprofessional female directors and producers from Caucasus with a documentary film project on development stage. Working language of the workshop is English. All participants must be able to communicate in English and visuals for the application need English subtitles

Costs

Participation is free of charge. Organizers will cover accommodation, coffee breaks and lunches of selected participants.

  3. Director´s note of your documentary film project
