The United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), in collaboration with ELS Educational Services, Inc., (ELS) invites students, 18 years of age or older, who are enrolled in a full-time course of study at a college or university, to participate in an essay contest on the theme “Many Languages, One World”.

The essay should relate to ideas of global citizenship and understanding and to the role that multilingual ability can play in fostering these. Entries of up to 2000 words in length must be in an official language of the United Nations that is not the entrant’s first language or language of instruction in his or her primary or secondary education. The official languages of the United Nations are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

Eligibility

  1. Full-time college or university students, 18 years of age or older, can participate in the contest;
  2. An authorized faculty member or university administrator must sponsor your participation in the contest by completing the Reference Form. The university representative must attest that you are a full time student and that you are going to submit an essay in an official language of the United Nations that is not your first language or language of instruction in your primary or secondary education;
  3. Once the reference has been received and confirmed, you will be sent an email with further instructions about how to enter the contest and upload your essay.

Award

A panel of judges will decide upon a total of 70 Winners of the contest – 10 in each of the 6 official United Nations languages, and an additional 10 chosen on merit from the remaining entries in all languages. These Winners will be invited to New York to participate in a series of events during the week of July 20-26, 2015. These events will include a Global Youth Forum on the sustainable development agenda in the context of multilingualism, cultural diversity and global citizenship at United Nations Headquarters, preceded by a preparatory students’ conference at Adelphi University sponsored and arranged by ELS Educational Services, Inc.

All winners will be given certificates of participation by ELS, signifying they have won the Student Essay Contest arranged in cooperation with the United Nations Academic Impact.

ELS will pay for the Winners’ roundtrip economy class airfares in carriers of its choosing between the commercial airport nearest the Winner’s home city and New York, and be responsible for their travel, room and meals for the duration of the conference. Sightseeing and recreation will be arranged by ELS.

It is your responsibility to obtain a passport and visa to enter the USA. You will be required to comply with the rules and regulations of participation in the event. Your e- ticket will only be issued to you after we receive copies of your passport and a signed copy of your acceptance of the terms and conditions of participation.

Application

  • Write your essay, according to the eligibility rules and guidelines;
  • Show your essay to a Faculty Member or University Administrator who can attest to the fact that you have followed the contest rules. Have that Faculty Member or University Administrator complete the Reference Form in support of your participation in the contest;
  • Once the Reference Form has been received and verified by Many Languages, One World, you will receive further information, and a link where you can complete your application and upload your essay to the contest website;
  • Complete your application form. Be sure to include your national identity card number or passport number showing your name as it appears on your passport or official documents. Do not submit your photo;
  • Upload your essay to the contest website.

Metropolitan Council in MN seeking Summer Interns

The Metropolitan Council’s Annual Internship Program offers a wide variety of opportunities to qualifying interns. Our program is designed to educate and mentor interns by providing professional on-the-job training and development. Participants of our internship program receive an hourly salary! Most interns work full-time during the summer, and some opportunities continue part-time through the school year.

The Metropolitan Council’s Urban Scholars Program is a 12-week internship and leadership development program starting May 26, 2015.  This program will provide students from diverse racial, ethnic, and/or low socio-economic backgrounds with distinctive professional experience focused on gaining essential leadership skills, and creating career pathways to positions of influence in public service.  In addition to completing projects as identified by participating Council departments (see available placements), students will participate in approximately 8 to 10 hours per week of leadership development activities such as public speaking, financial literacy, career guidance, networking, etc.  Urban Scholars will also serve as ambassadors to the communities by sharing their internship and transit-riding experience through blogs and journals.

To participate in these Council programs:
  • You must have completed at least one year of post-secondary education; and/or have been enrolled in a post-secondary educational program within the last 12 months.
  • You must be a citizen or national of the United States; a lawful, permanent resident; or have authorization to work in the United States. (Documentation to verify employment eligibility will be required at the time of employment.)

SEARAC’s Leadership and Advocacy Training (LAT) in DC

SEARAC’s Leadership and Advocacy Training (LAT) has been moved to June, 2015. Please stay tuned for an updated date. The application deadline is now extended from February 2 to February 9, 2015. Please contact Souvan Lee at souvan@searac.org with any questions or concerns.

The LAT program provides a forum for Southeast Asian American community leaders to participate in activities and workshops that include collective strategizing, networking, advocacy, and relationship building with decision makers on issues that impact the Southeast Asian American community.

The 3-day program trains participants to become advocacy leaders in their communities, and is best suited for community members hoping to learn more about education, health, and immigration policy, effective communication and framing, and creating system-level change. Participants will have an opportunity to reflect on their own personal experiences, identify both issues and solutions, and network with other change-makers from across the country.

There is no cost for the training. SEARAC will cover all lodging and the majority of travel expenses for accepted applicants living outside of the Washington, DC area. Participants may be responsible for a portion of their travel costs.

Tree Trust Summer Youth Employment Program

For youth that will be age 14, and less than 22 by June 1, 2015 and reside in suburban Hennepin.
