Description

The Tom Lantos Institute (TLI) and the National University of Public Service (NUPS) in cooperation with the Middlesex University London (MU) and with the support of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade are organising their third international Summer School on Minority Rights with a special focus on the impact of boundary politics on identity and inequality. It will take place from 19 to 25 July 2015 in Budapest, Hungary.

The Summer School aims to:

  • Understand and critically assess the relevant international law and related practice on ethnic conflict resolution;
  • Present and review existing practice on the management of border communities in different regions of Europe;
  • Understand and discuss the effectiveness of the international minority protection regime with a particular focus on identity politics and equality.

This Summer School is envisaged as a space for meeting and consulting with authoritative academics, practitioners, public servants and decision-makers, providing participants the opportunity to share their experiences and present their research projects for discussion.

Eligibility

  • Public servants, decision-makers, teachers in higher education and journalists with an interest in diversity management, equality policies, minority rights, ethnic conflict resolution, geopolitics, and relevant international law;
  • MA and PhD students who wish to acquire competitive personal competence beneficial for their future careers in academia or in practice-oriented professions;
  • Members of civil society organisations, practitioners;
  • Everyone who is interested in recent developments, current theories and advanced training in the field of minority protection.

A good command of English is required as the language of the Summer School will be English.

Costs

The participation fee is 150 €. This fee covers tuition, accommodation, meals and cultural events.

The NUPS offers 15 full scholarships. 

Financial support is offered by the TLI and the NUPS.

  • Six full scholarships for overseas applicants cover the participation fee and the travel costs to Budapest (except airport transfer). They do not cover visa fees.
  • Nine partial scholarships cover the participation fee (tuition, accommodation, meals, and cultural events). The travel costs to Budapest are not covered by the partial scholarships.

Applicants for scholarship have to have:

  • Proven current interest or work in the field;
  • Strong motivation to improve their understanding and skills;
  • Demonstrated plans for future activities or career where they can use the knowledge, contacts and skills acquired.

Preference is given to members of national or ethnic, linguistic or religious minorities.

Dunwoody College Career Awareness Program in Minneapolis, MN, USA

June 15-July 17, 9AM-3PM. For high school juniors and seniors. Students have college level courses and are introduced to Dunwoody tech classes. Receive a $100 weekly stipend, a free bus pass and food.

The Youth Career Awareness Program (YCAP) has been a part of Dunwoody College of Technology since 1988.  The program was founded by Mr. Leon Rankin (YCAP Director Emeritus) and President Emeritus Warren Phillips.

Our Mission: To enhance the career opportunities of under-represented youth, by empowering them to graduate from high school and obtain a degree from Dunwoody College of Technology.

We are proud of our statistics which are…

  1. 96% of YCAP students graduate from high school.
  2. 85% of YCAP students go on to post-secondary education at Dunwoody College of Technology.
  3. YCAP has assisted more than 1,250 students since the induction of our program!

Students accepted into the program are current high school juniors, seniors and potential first year Dunwoody College of Technology students. All applicants must be in good academic standing at their schools (2.5 G.P.A or higher), driven to succeed, interested in learning more about Dunwoody’s technical careers and have a strong financial need.

In addition to our mission our goals are to provide more females and students of color who come from a disadvantaged background, the opportunity to attend college. We begin with a six-week summer session, during which the YCAP students come to the Dunwoody campus to learn more about the various technical programs offered at Dunwoody. Students also improve their academic skills by taking College level courses and working on web-based academic soft ware.

Each grade level has a different summer experience
  1. YCAP II – (Entering 12th grade): Students spend their summer completing in-depth projects within 3-4 Dunwoody Departments and take College level courses to sharpen reading, writing, math and study skills.
  2. YCAP III – (Graduated Senior/Dunwoody Student): Students spend their summer completing in-depth projects within 3-4 Dunwoody Departments and take College level courses to sharpen reading, writing, math and study skills.
Monthly School Year Student Workshops

Workshops are hosted at Dunwoody College of Technology once a month for two hours, during which time each group focuses on a theme for the academic year.

Job Shadow Opportunity for Youth in MN, USA

10 young people will be selected to job shadow 10 individuals who work in the State Legislature; Senators, Representatives, Legislative Commission staff, Democrats, Republicans, Nonpartisans. The goal of this opportunity is to introduce young people to the kinds of jobs available in their future as leaders in Minnesota.

Day of shadowing: Day starts with breakfast & a brief orientation.

REACHING OUT TO NATIVE AMERICAN YOUTH TO INSPIRE READING, WRITING, AND HIGHER EDUCATION

The Young Native Writers Essay Contest is a writing contest for Native American high school students and is designed to encourage young Native Americans to write about their experiences as a member of a Native American community and the culture that inspires them.

The voices that emerge from this program honor the legacy of every Native American who has ever lived. Add your words to the thousands submitted through this project – all writers receive a Certificate of Honor for their submission.

The Holland & Knight Charitable Foundation’s goal of promoting education and creating new opportunities for youth has inspired this essay contest. Partnering with Holland & Knight in this endeavor are the National Museum of the American Indian and the National Indian Education Association.

Program Description:

Spend your summer in London and Amman exploring the process of peace and the sensitive cultural and societal roots of conflict. This unique program will begin in the U.K. by studying peace and conflict theory, using Northern Ireland as a case study for beginning to understand how those theories translate to Middle Eastern issues. Once in Amman, use your new understanding of peace and conflict to examine how the Arab/Israeli conflict; regional conflicts such as those in Lebanon, Yemen or Iraq; and tribal conflicts are being addressed.  Following the conclusion of the Peace and Conflict Program, students have the opportunity to stay in Amman and pursue a course in intensive Arabic language, including instruction in both Modern Standard Arabic and Jordanian Arabic.

The Undergraduate Internship Program

The Pasteur Foundation Summer Internship Program provides U.S. undergraduates, entering their Junior year, with the rare opportunity to work on supervised research projects at the Institut Pasteur. The Foundation’s goal is to encourage and inspire students in the pursuit of a scientific career and to expose them to an international laboratory experience.

During the internships, interns will carry out research supervised by a lab mentor. Applicants should be eager to engage with a different culture, and self-sufficient enough to arrange travel and secure housing in Paris. Depending on availability, affordable housing in a residence on campus may be possible. Interns will receive the equivalent of a living allowance of $500 per week for a maximum of $5,000. Travel/housing are not paid by this program, but a $1,500 subsidy is provided and intended to defray costs of travel and requisite insurance.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  1. Be undergraduates with an excellent academic record and a strong interest in biosciences and biomedical research (prior lab experience is highly recommended);
  2. Have completed three full years (six semesters) of college course work by the time the internship commences (be a rising senior);
  3. Not have received an undergraduate degree at the time of the internship (Summer 2015).
  4. Knowledge of French is not necessary, but a desire to learn it is advisable. This program is open to U.S. citizens only.

Description: The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers a competition for awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. The Gilman International Scholarship Program seeks to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the regions where they go. 2015 Cultures of Resistance Scholarships at SOAS University of London

Description

SOAS University of London is the only Higher Education institution in Europe specialising in the study of Asia, Africa and the Near and Middle East.

Thanks to a very generous philanthropic donation received from the Cultures of Resistance Network Foundation and the American Friends of SOAS (AFSOAS), a set of new postgraduate scholarships are now available at SOAS. That donation has been matched by an additional contribution from the SOAS Students’ Union to make up the Cultures of Resistance Scholarships at SOAS.

The scholarships will benefit people from countries that have been affected by wars and extreme poverty. Security conditions permitting, scholars are expected to return to their home countries to apply their knowledge and skills for the betterment of their societies. In the case of refugees or those fearing repression and censorship in their home countries, they expect that they will seek employment/work/study abroad toward the aim of improving the future of their home country and that of its citizens. They hope that scholarship recipients will pursue careers that, among other things, promote universal human rights, international law, equal justice for all and the enrichment of civil society and robust grassroots democracy.

Scholarship

Two Cultures of Resistance Scholarships will be available in 2015/16. Each scholarship is valued at £15,000 in total. Fees will be deducted from this amount and the remainder will be used toward maintenance. In addition, each scholar will benefit from a 20% reduction in their tuition fees, from free accommodation at International Student House (ISH) and food vouchers to be spent in the ISH restaurant.

Although priority will be given to students resident in Afghanistan, Burma/Myanmar, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Iraq, Kashmir, Kurdistan, the Palestinian Territories (West Bank and Gaza), Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Tibet, Western Sahara, Yemen, West Papua and Papua, the scholarship programme is also open to students resident in the following countries/territories:

Candidates must:

  • Candidates must hold (or be expected to obtain) a good honours degree, preferably first class, from a UK institution or overseas equivalent.
  • Candidates should describe in their personal statement of their admission application: how the political situation in your home country, especially violent conflict, war, poverty, and/or military occupation, has shaped your experiences and ambitions in life; how these experiences have affected your interest in human rights, social justice, and grassroots democracy; what academic and social issues you plan to explore during your studies at SOAS; what you hope to do upon completion of your program at SOAS; what the most pressing problems are in your home country and how the pursuit of education at SOAS in your chosen field would promote human rights, social justice, equality, and the enrichment of civil society in your home country.
  • Candidates must have an offer of admission to pursue a full time eligible programme by the scholarship closing date.
  • Applicants must meet the English language condition of their offer of admission to study at SOAS as soon as possible but no later than 1 June 2015.  If your offer is conditional on English, please arrange your English test and ensure you meet the English requirements as soon as possible.

Application

Scholarship Applications must be received no later than 17:00 (UK local time) on 20 March 2015. Applicants applying for scholarships must also submit an application for admission well in advance.  Please note that complete applications for admission can take up to 4 weeks to be considered by the Department, although this duration can vary depending on the time of year.  You should be prepared to wait up to 6 weeks in busy periods.

STEP 1: You must apply for this scholarship via the on-line scholarship application form.  The scholarship application will be available HERE from mid-January 2015.
STEP 2: In addition to the online scholarship application, applicants must also submit a complete on-line application for admission.  

A complete application for admission includes transcripts, an explanation of the grading system for any degrees obtained outside of the UK, two references, CV and a personal statement.  The panel will be considering your scholarship application together with your on-line application for admission.
