The Centre for European Studies, Jagiellonian University and the ARENA Centre for European Studies, University of Oslo are pleased to invite MA and Phd students, as well as anyone interested in the topic  to participate in the international Winter School in English:  “Democracy, expertise and power: the role of experts in modern European societies “

International Winter School will take place 7-15 February 2015, in Krakow, Poland. Participants will take part in seminars conducted by experts from both Jagiellonian and Oslo University on the following issues:

  • the knowledge society, from a theoretical and practical dimension; experts and their role in modern democracies;
  • the role of universities in creating knowledge and implementing the public change;
  • the media as the fourth power; models of democracy;
  • and finally civil society and social movements as new actors on the political scene.

The discussions will enable participants to answer the question of whether knowledge is the driving force of modern democracy or a tool in the hands of technocrats and bureaucrats.

The Winter School welcomes all countries’ MA, Phd students as well as alumni or participants interested in the topic.

The Show off Your Forest Photography Contest

FOREST EUROPE is pleased to invite you to the second edition of the Show Off Your Forest Photography Contest. In 2014 they are setting a new photographic challenge: show how forests protect us and how we can protect them! Tell them with the aid of one or several photos the benefits forests provide us with and how they protect us. Show what threats they face and what would happen if they weren’t protected. Show how they are being protected and how you can protect them. The 2014 edition looks at two categories:

  • Mobile: Photo taken with a mobile phone or tablet camera;
  • CameraPhoto taken with a digital camera.

Eligibility

This competition is open to every individual from around the world. The only condition is that you take a picture from a forest that is located in Europe.

Awards

First places in the two categories: The winners of the Show Off Your Forest photography competition will be given a trip for two to a protected forest area in Spain. The prize includes the airfare and hotel accommodation, in addition to a guide who will accompany the winners on their visit to the nature park.

Second places in the two categories: The winning participants of the second prize in the Show Off Your Forest competition will be given a Nikon D3100 photographic camera and a professional waterproof case.

Accesit Mobile and Digital camera category: The winners of this prize will get  two mountain garments, comprising a pair of Forcau Red trousers and a Mountain of Winter Softshell polar jacket.

International Cultural Fellowships in St. Petersburg, Russia

The Likhachev Foundation (St. Petersburg, Russia) together with Committee on External Relations of Saint Petersburg and B. Yeltsin Presidential Center (Moscow, Russia) announces a competition for ten 2-week cultural fellowships in Russia (St. Petersburg) from May 11 till May 24, 2015.

The fellowships are open to professional in the field or arts and culture who work on projects related to Russian culture. The creative project could be a museum exhibition project, a theater production, a film, a photo exhibition, preparation of fiction or research books, etc. related to Russian culture or history. The creative project should be conceived in a foreign country and should be aimed at a broad audience. Two-week residency in Russia should serve as an important stage in the realization of the applicant’s cultural project.

The Likhachev Foundation will prepare individual programs for the fellows according to their projects’ specifics, to help them achieve maximum results during their fellowships. These programs will include meetings with Russian colleagues, opportunities to work at St. Petersburg museums, libraries, archives, and other organizations. Thank you for supporting!

Eligibility

The Likhachev Foundation accepts applications from professionals in the field of culture and history or arts from foreign countries who are currently working on creative projects related to Russian culture or history. Command of the Russian language is very helpful but not required.

​Peace Revolution Artistic Meditation Retreat 2015 in Thailand

This Artistic Meditation Retreat will take place from August 11th to 24th, 2015 and will combine a two-week meditation and self-discipline training with artistic creation, where the artist participants will be guided into meditation by the Teaching Monks three times a day.

Grants for Tourism Projects for seniors and young people

Description

Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises under the European Commission opens a call for proposals “Facilitating EU Transnational Tourism Flows For Seniors And Young People In The Low And Medium Seasons”. The main aim of this call is to strengthen competitiveness of the European tourism sector by encouraging the extension of the tourism season and by increasing internal mobility of seniors (over 55 years old)  and young people (15-29 years old).

The project proposals must follow one of the two following strands according to the chosen target:

  1. “STRAND A” – Under this Strand, the Commission will co-finance specific actions aimed at developing transnational tourism products for seniors, facilitating tourism flows in Europe during the low and medium seasons
  2. “STRAND B” – Under this strand, the Commission wishes to finance up to 2 projects that should be ”exemplary”, both in terms of their capacity to address the major needs and constraints young people perceive as barriers to transnational mobility and in terms of their ability to become a reference model which will be replicable and transferable.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants are:

  • Public authorities (national, regional, local) and their networks or associations at European, international, national, regional and local level;
  • International organisations;
  • Youth/seniors organisations/associations/federations
  • Universities;
  • Training and educational institutions;
  • Research centres;
  • Destination management organisations and their networks/associations;
  • Travel agents and tour operators and their umbrella associations;
  • Non-profit organisation (private or public), NGOs, civil society organizations, foundations, think-tanks, umbrella associations, networks or federations of public or private bodies, whose core activity falls under the following fields: tourism, youth or senior policies, or any other field that is strictly related to the object of the proposal;
  • Chambers of commerce and industry, chambers of handicrafts or similar bodies and their umbrella associations;
  • Small and Medium Size enterprises (SMEs) acting in the tourism sector

Applicants must be established in EU Member States; or in countries participating in the COSME programme (list HERE). 

Proposals should be presented by consortia made of minimum 4 partners and a maximum of 8, from at least 4 different eligible countries. The consortium must be composed of at least 1 public governmental authority, 1 partner representing a youth or senior organisation, and 1 tourism service provider.

Grant

The maximum grant per project will be:

  • 220.000 euros for projects submitted under STRAND A
  • 250.000 euros for projects submitted under STRAND B

The Commission expects to fund 8-10 proposals. The EU grant is limited to a maximum co-funding rate of 75% of eligible costs.

“Employability United” International Meeting of young people in Strasbourg, France

Description

The Youth Social Rights Network in cooperation with the European Youth Centre of the Council of Europe, The Youth Department, are organizing the international meeting  “Employability United” which will take place in Strasbourg, France from 19th – 24th January 2015.

The meeting will bring together 40 participants from the Council of Europe Countries and aims to promote and support access to employment and autonomy for young people by training and networking among young people, youth organizations/youth workers, local authorities and business sector representatives.

The objectives of the meeting are:

  • To familiarize participants with the specific aspects of gaining autonomy for young people;
  • To discuss and share attitudes, knowledge and experience related to employment and employment trends in Europe affecting young people;
  • To familiarize participants with practices, policies and systems that support access to employment for young people in different local realities;
  • To discuss and reflect on knowledge, skills and support measures that youth workers, local authorities, business sector representatives need to be competent in, so as to support young people in gaining autonomy and accessing employment;
  • To give opportunity for cooperation and networking between young people, youth workers, local authorities, business sector representatives in order to support young people in gaining autonomy and accessing employment;
  • To create concrete follow up activities at local and international level for supporting young people in gaining autonomy and accessing employment.

Eligibility

The meeting is open to the following profiles:

  • Young people aged 18-30 years old with little or no experience in international activities who have never been to European Youth Centre;
  • Youth workers working on supporting the process of gaining autonomy and accessing employment. They should have knowledge and experience on access to social rights for young people with accent on access to employment and employment related issues.
  • Local authorities representatives working in sectors related to youth issues or employment. They should have knowledge and experience on access to social rights for young people with accent on access to employment and employment related issues.
  • Business sector representatives working in structured company with min. 5 employees and involved in decision making process in the company.

All the candidates should be highly motivated and be able to work in English.

Costs

The organizers will cover board and loading as well as travel costs. There is a participation fee of €50 per participant which will be deducted from the refund of travel expenses.
