2014 IPU Paid Internship in Switzerland

Description

Inter-Parliamentary Union, a global political organization offering internships for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students. Applicants should pursuing a course of study or work in fields related to the IPU’s mandate and activities.  Interns will came aross how the IPU operates and enhance their educational experience by working under the supervision of a senior staff member. Internship will amount to SFr. 1,000 per month in Geneva. Last date to apply is 16th May 2014. Maximun length of the internship will be 6 months. The internship is expected to run for a period of 3 months. It should start no later than 1 June.

Field of Internship: Within the delegated authority interns’ tasks will include:

-Reviewing tagged records for accuracy and completeness;
-Tagging website content according to the current taxonomy model;
-Fine tuning the taxonomy tree to ensure delivery of targeted, relevant content;
-Other assigned tasks related to the content migration.

– Initiative and flexibility.
– The cost of travel, insurance and accommodation, as well as living expenses, are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

– Interns are responsible for arranging their own accommodation.
– IPU does not accept responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship.
– Interns are responsible for procuring and maintaining their own insurance coverage for illness and accidents while they are working at the IPU, and a copy of documentation attesting to such insurance coverage should be provided by each intern on their first day of internship.
– Any past work experience and knowledge of IT-related work would be an advantage.
– Close relatives of a serving IPU official are not eligible to apply.
– Working knowledge, both oral and written, of the IPU’s official languages (English and French).
– University degree or final year of undergraduate studies;
– Degrees in disciplines considered relevant to the IPU’s work, e.g. international law, economics, political science, and the social sciences.

OSCE/ODIHR Youth Forum 2014 in Warsaw, Poland

Description

The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) is organizing a two-day Youth Forum on 16-17 June 2014 in Warsaw.  The Youth Forum will bring together 35 youth leaders  to discuss challenges to youth political participation in the 21st century and ways to overcome these. The final outcome of the Youth Forum will be a number of recommendations on how the OSCE and its institutions can better assist participating States to meet their commitments and obligations on the inclusion of youth in democratic processes.

The Youth Forum will involve three categories of young leaders – representing the following categories:

  1. Voice: This relates to informal forms of political participation and focuses on online activism. Ideal candidates include representatives of social media groups and bloggers.
  2. Influence: This relates to semi-formal forms of political participation and focuses on civil society organizations active in advocating and lobbying for changes to policies. We are looking for leaders who want to influence politics but do not want to do so through formal structures.
  3. Governance: This relates to formal mechanisms of political participation such as political parties and governance institutions. Ideal candidates are leaders such as young politicians and members of parliaments, government representatives, city councilors, policy and political advisors.

The Youth Forum will exploring different forms of political participation and how these complement each other thus including youth in democratic policy work. Participants will be offered an opportunity to discuss good practices and challenges in youth political participation in the OSCE region. The Youth Forum will also offer a unique opportunity to explore and discuss the unique approach that the OSCE offers – its comprehensive cross-dimensional approach to security. The participants will be asked to actively participate during the Youth Forum in various working groups. Moreover, selected participants will be asked to actively participate in moderated online discussions ahead of the Youth Forum. The OSCE/ODIHR reserves the right to withdraw the invitation should a selected participant fail to engage in online discussion, on a weekly basis, ahead of the seminar.

Selection criteria:
− Young leaders aged 25 to 35;
− Gender and geographical balance;
− Minimum 2 years of experience and proven track record of involvement and engagement within their social community (i.e. involvement in the NGO sector, student’s unions, local and national political parties, online democracy and human rights associations, political parties and NGOs);
− Participants will have to submit this application form and their CV;
− All applicants will be asked to take part in a skype interview;
− English language competency

Costs

  • Accommodation and travel costs for the event will be covered by the OSCE/ODIHR.

2014 UNESCO Education for Sustainable Development Youth Conference in Japan

Are you between 18 and 35 years old? Are you involved in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)? Do you have success stories and innovative ESD initiatives you could share? Would you like to meet and collaborate with other ESD youth leaders from around the world? Do you want to add your voice to youth-focused recommendations that will be presented at the World Conference on ESD?

The UNESCO ESD Youth Conference will bring together 50 young ESD leaders from around the world in Okayama City, Japan on 7 November 2014.

As a Youth Conference participant you will have an opportunity to exchange your ideas and experiences with peers. You will be able to discuss innovative approaches to ESD and ways to promote young people’s contribution and further involvement in the global ESD movement. And you will help elaborate commitments to future ESD actions.

Conference participants will also be involved in developing recommendations for the UNESCO World Conference on ESD, which will take place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan from 10-12 November 2014. All Youth Conference participants will be invited to take part in the World Conference.

The Youth Conference is being organized by UNESCO, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT), the Japanese National Commission for UNESCO, the City of Okayama and The Goi Peace Foundation.

Eligibility

To be eligible for participation in the UNESCO ESD Youth Conference, you must:
1) Be between 18-35 years of age as of 1 June 2014.
2) Have demonstrated active engagement in the field of Education for Sustainable Development.
3) Have a good command of English, and be able to actively participate in conference discussions.
4) Be able to attend the full schedule of events in Japan from 6-13 November 2014 (or at least through 11 November), and to take part in the prior online consultations in September-October 2014 to prepare for Youth Conference discussions and input to the World Conference.

Travel Sponsorship

Successful applicants will receive travel sponsorship. Organizers will provide roundtrip air tickets between the participant’s nearest airport and Japan, as well as accommodation, meals and transportation within Japan. Please note that participants are responsible for their domestic transportation (from their home to the nearest airport), visa application, traveler’s insurance, and incidental expenses during their stay in Japan.

Seeking students for Asian American journalism leadership program in DC

Hope this email finds you well. My name is Ruth Liao, and I’m a journalist and volunteer with the Asian American Journalists Association. This year, I’m serving program director for a career development initiative for college students called Voices.
If you’re unfamiliar with the program, it provides free flight and lodging to our participants to attend the Asian American Journalists Association national convention, which takes place in August in DC this year. Students work on a multimedia project under the mentoring of professional journalists and get to network with top job recruiters.

The BRIDGE Program is a professional development program designed for emerging young professionals in journalism. Leading academics and scholars of journalism and media from the US, the Czech Republic and Turkey are developing the curriculum which will consist of three main components: academic coursework, new skills development, and intercultural learning. The program’s mission is to promote greater understanding and create networks among students of journalism and media by learning about and discussing recent developments in Europe, the US and the MENA region.

The goal of the BRIDGE program is to advance knowledge and access to reporting tools and networks of journalism students during a two week summer program, taking place in two geographical locations – Czech Republic and Turkey. The summer program features academic coursework, mentorship of students’ research, workshops with experts on digital media, roundtables with journalists and policymakers, and visits of local media and news agencies in Prague and Istanbul.

The Bridge program is organized by Prague Freedom Foundation in cooperation with Zaostreno and ProPublica under the auspices of Faculty of the Social Sciences of Charles University.

Eligibility

The candidates must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Current university students of media, journalism and related fields.
  • Citizenship of one of the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Jordan, Kosovo, Morocco, Romania, Slovakia, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine or the USA.
  • Passport valid until September 2015 and ability to travel to the Czech Republic and Turkey.
  • Must have successfully completed minimum of two academic semesters.
  • Overall excellent academic standing.
  • Excellent oral and written English language skills (equivalent to TOEFL score of 550).

Costs

The successful candidates will receive full scholarship covering: travel cost, room and board and study materials related expenses.

İnternational Youth Conference in Bratislava

ID Space Team together with the Youth Parliament in Bratislava is calling youth leaders to participate in a four-day international meeting! ’Young Leaders for Tomorrow’s Europe’ (YLTE) will take place between the 11th and the 14th August, 2014 in Bratislava, Slovakia with the support of the Embassy of the United States in Bratislava and Bratislava City Council.

The meeting welcomes youths with a wealth of experience in Youth NGOs and Voluntary Organisations, or with experience in youth activism and active citizenship and having a keen interest in international affairs. The conference aims to tackle to themes: youth empowerment and youths on the world stage. Participants will develop the skills needed to positively impact their community such as leadership, public speaking, speech writing and debating. These tools will also be utilised in the second part of the conference which will give participants the opportunity to simulate international crises.

Finally, it is our hope that the conference will provide the right environment for alumni of the US Department of State Youth Programs to think and plan projects for their own communities and to learn from each others’ experiences in order to take the lead back home once the conference is over.

Eligibility

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • be between the ages of 18 and 24 years old
  • be linked to an organization or a network (e.g. Youth NGOs and Voluntary Organisations, or with experience in youth activism and active citizenship and having a keen interest in international affairs;
  • possess upper-intermediate English proficiency.

Costs

The conference is funded under the Embassy of the United States of America and Bratislava City Council. All costs regarding travel and accommodation together with breakfast will be reimbursed for all the selected participants.

Innovate Heritage: Conversations between Arts and Heritage 2014, Germany

The Innovate Heritage: Conversations between Arts and Heritage is based out of the World Heritage Studies program at the Brandenburgische Technische Universität (BTU) Cottbus-Senftenberg, Germany. We will focus on exploring relationships and overlapping aspects of heritage and the arts, jumping from a foundational knowledge base in UNESCO World Heritage into an expanded, tactile, and exploratory perspective while looking at the subtexts of heritage in collaboration with the arts.

The three-day program, composed of lectures, panel discussions, seminars, exhibitions, performances and films will allow participants to gain a stronger insight towards the nexuses between Heritage and Arts from various cultural perspectives, working practices and theoretical approaches. (Position based in Baku, with moving to Sumgait for 3 months during Pre Service Training)

Approximate Start Date: 5 May 2014

Position Summary:

      The LC coordinates all activities related to the Azerbaijani language program at Post, including:

  • coordinating the development and production of the Azerbaijani language training curriculum;
  • designing, conducting, monitoring, and evaluating all language training programs for Peace Corps Volunteers;
  • training and coordinating the work of Language and Culture Facilitators and other language training or testing staff;
  • assessing/evaluating language levels of trainees/Volunteers;
  • monitoring and supporting the on-going language learning of Volunteers.  Coordinates Information Resource Center (IRC), including managing Center and acquiring resources as needed and within budget.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Relevant university diploma, preferably with a degree in education/foreign languages;
  • 4+ years of teaching Azerbaijani to foreigners;
  • knowledge of progressive teaching approaches;
  • experience in designing/facilitating trainings/workshops for adults, preferably in teaching/teacher training, excellent Azerbaijani and English skills;
  • ability to effectively train language teachers  on teaching Azerbaijani  as a second language;
  • ability to communicate verbally and in writing; experience working in an international organization;
  • demonstrate capacity to work with people of diverse backgrounds;
  • good computer skills including Word, Excel, and databases. Willing to live and work outside of Baku for duration of Pre-Service Training.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Classroom teaching experience;
  • Certified as a LPI tester, Experience living and working in the United States or 5 years experience working with Americans is highly desired as is familiarity with life in the rayons.
