Description

The International Youth Initiative Program (YIP) is a holistic educational program that strengthens young people’s capacity to take initiative in the face of current global challenges.

The purpose of the International Youth Initiative Program is to foster in young people a holistic understanding of the current challenges humanity faces and to empower them to use entrepreneurial principles and skills to create initiatives and change within themselves that meet these challenges while practising collaboration and moral integrity.

Eligibility

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • Are you between 18 & 28 years old?
  • Do you have a basic sense of the global challenges we are facing as humanity?
  • Do you want to understand these challenges better?
  • Do you want to learn how to work together with other people in creating a better world?

Costs

The Program Cost per participant is SEK 100.000.-  For current exchange rates, see table on the left of this page. Please consider that this price includes lodging (for the year) and food (during the course-week) when you eventually compare these costs to other programs or studies.

Specifically, it includes:

  • The Program, Courses, Course Materials and Evening Activities
  • Organic Meals
  • (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner from Monday – Friday, not during holidays)

The DRC Summer School on Regional Co-operation

Description

The DRC Summer School project was initiated by IDM (Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe) and International House Pécs in 2003 to promote regional co-operation among young social scientists. Its general aim is the establishment of a network of young scientists who deal with the issue of regional co-operation as Central European perspective, and thus the institutionalisation of the Summer School for the future. The 11th summer school is another step towards enhancing and deepening scientific co-operations in Central Europe, among the project partners, i.e. institutions from the V4 countries, the Ukraine, Austria and some Western Balkan countries. Since 2007 the IDM is represented in the project by Dr. Susan Milford whereas IDResearch Ltd. is represented by Dr. István Tarrósy, managing director, and former managing director of the Regional European Information and Education Centre PBC who has been implementing the project with the Austrian partners for nine years.

The 11th edition of the Summer School lies its focus on the countries of the Danube region as the Danube Rectors’ Conference provides a platform for the collaboration of 50 institutions of higher education from 13 countries in the Danubian region.

The Summer School will take place between 5–12 July 2015 at BOKU, Vienna, Austria.

Eligibility

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • Young scientists from the Danube Region and Central Europe who have records in Political Science or other social science disciplines.
  • Graduates who want to present their research projects to the students of the Summer School in the lectures.
  • Interested persons from regional organisations, public administration and scientific institutions.

Costs

The registration fee of the Summer School is EUR 200.-, the contribution to the expenses for board and accommodation is EUR 230.

Please note that it is possible to apply for a scholarship on board and accommodation as well as on a partial travel reimbursement (limited to EUR 100.

The deadline for application is June 7, 2015, after the acceptance of your paper the registration and board and accommodation fees have to be paid by June 26, 2015. Please find more details on the application form.

Early Bird registration: There is a possibility to register as an ‘Early bird’. If you submit your paper and application form before April 5, 2015, you pay only half (50%) of the registration fee. After the acceptance of your paper the registration (EUR 100.-) and board and accommodation fees have to be paid by April 30, 2015. International Symposium on Gender and Aesthetics: Art, Film and Literature

The Gender and Women’s Studies Forum at Sabanci University invites proposals for the symposium, “Gender and Aesthetics: Art, Film, and Literature,” which will take place on November 6-8, 2015 in Istanbul.

The symposium aims to explore how gender informs the theory, history, creation, and reception of art and literature and how art and literature influence and challenge definitions and experiences of gender and sexuality. Materials for the presentations may be drawn from literature, art, film, popular culture, theatre, dance, and related fields. Theoretical and interdisciplinary approaches focusing on specific texts, themes or formal issues are welcome. Some topics that may be addressed in this context are:

  • Gender, sexuality, and self as artistic and cultural constructs
  • Gendered and queer representations and reconfigurations of the body, space, temporality
  • Gendered and queer representations and reconfigurations of desire and transgression
  • Literary and artistic explorations of the relations, tensions, intersections between class, race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality
  • Literary and artistic expressions of crises in gender and sexual roles and identities
  • Gendered definitions and practices of authorship, creativity, influence, and artistic authority
  • The role gender norms and constructs play in establishing, reproducing, or contesting aesthetic values, traditions, and hierarchies
  • Literary and artistic experimentation as a strategy for re-conceiving gender and sexuality
  • Feminist and queer perspectives on subjects such as language, the gaze, the self-portrait, autobiography
  • The relationship between gender and conceptions of beauty, taste, and the body

 

The symposium will be in English and Turkish. Proposals for 20 minute presentations should be about 300 words and sent to genderforum@sabanciuniv.edu by June 1, 2015.

Preparing Global Leaders Summit (PGLS 2015)

Deadline: 1 June 2015 Open to: participants between the ages of 18 and 35 years old Venue: 25-31 July 2015, Moscow, Russian Federation Description PGLS is a component school of Preparing Global Leaders Foundation (PGLF), an educational non-profit dedicated to changing the paradigm of leadership through intensive institutes, seminars, and summits. PGLF operates programs currently in Russia, Macedonia, Croatia, and Jordan and its program alumni hail from over a hundred countries. The Preparing Global Leaders Summit (PGLS) is a premiere international educational program for the best young professionals in the world. The program seeks to prepare aspiring global scholar-leaders with the tools that are necessary for effective leadership in an increasingly complex world. Students will join a distinguished faculty that includes PGLF founder Dr. Sam Potolicchio (Georgetown University, New York University, RANEPA), former Rhodes Scholar and current Columbia University Professor Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, and Dr. Branden Thornhill-Miller (Oxford, Sorbonne). Students and young professionals take short courses from internationally recognized faculty and participate in a range of leadership simulations. Specifically, participants will learn how to develop an opposable, interdisciplinary mind with an ability to work with and across ideological, national, religious, class and racial differences. They will learn how to communicate effectively, think both critically and creatively with a particular emphasis on how to advance the global public good. PGLS 2015 curricula and simulations will cover the following topics: negotiation, strategic thinking, public speaking, networking, persuasion, branding, public policy, statistics, comparative politics, demography, citizenship, civil wars, geopolitical strategy, Russia and the West, and Russian politics and history. Eligibility In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria: be between the ages of 18 and 35 years old; be linked to an organization or a network (e.g. youth council, youth NGO, not-profit organization, youth-led organization, community organization, faith-based organization, youth network or platform, college, university), or be a social entrepreneur, blogger, intern or volunteer; possess upper-intermediate English proficiency; complete at least first cycle of university studies. Costs The total price for PGLS 2015 is 1200 USD. The fee includes welcome and final dinners, accommodations, daily breakfast and lunch, tutorial materials, tuition and transportation to and from the airport. International Creative Writing Summer School 2015

In partnership with the Kingston Writing School and Kingston University, we’re pleased to announce the courses that comprise our third annual International Creative Writing Summer School in Athens and Thessaloniki.

The Summer School provides opportunities for writers from across the world to develop their critical and analytical skills, enhance their writing abilities, and work intensely in an inspiring and creative environment with experienced writers associated with the Kingston Writing School, Kingston University, London. Among the writers and professors who have taught at the Summer School in the past are: Rachel CuskPaul BaileyJames MillerNorma Clarke and Maurice Walsh.

This year, the Summer School has broadened and enriched its programme and offers students the opportunity to practise writing fiction, non-fiction, poetry, scriptwriting and suspense writing under the supervision and guidance of highly accomplished writers.

Certificates of achievement will be awarded upon completion.

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • Applicants should be able to demonstrate a high level of written and spoken English (equivalent to an IELTS score of 6.5 overall and 7.0 in the writing module).
  • They will also be required to submit a sample of their work in English: either a selection of poems or a prose piece of approximately 2,000 words, depending on the course they have chosen.

Open Society Youth Fellowship

Description

The Open Society Youth Fellowship supports young activists and organizers as thought leaders and allies in crafting solutions and new youth-focused approaches to open society challenges.

Youth Fellows should take advantage of the considerable intellectual and logistical resources of the Open Society Foundations and expect to contribute meaningfully to the Foundations’ thinking in return. While fellows will work outside of Open Society Foundations core offices, they will liaise with the Open Society Youth Exchange to identify opportunities for both in-person and virtual engagement with Open Society staff and partners. The Youth Exchange will work with each individual fellow to identify additional opportunities for the fellow to learn from and collaborate with staff and partners through site visits, speaking engagements, and other fora.

Fellows may produce a variety of work products, including publications, such as reports and blog posts; infographics and other visual content; innovative education and training resources and tools; the launch of new campaigns and organizations; and creation of artistic or cultural expression projects. They may also engage in activities such as hosting panel discussions, traveling to conferences, and presenting on their work in other public spaces.

Eligibility

All applicants should be under the age of 30. While we will consider applicants who are currently employed by a civil society organization or university, we will request additional information to confirm that the individual is acting on their own in regards to their proposed project, and that their current employer is flexible with their independent role as a Youth Fellow.

The Youth Exchange accepts proposals from anywhere in the world, with a particular interest in proposals from the global south. Applicants should possess a deep understanding of their particular field and a record of successful movement-building initiatives, innovative project management experience, and/or experience in research/tools development. Applicants must be proficient in spoken English.

Fellowship applications should relate to at least one of the following areas of work:

  • youth mobilization and innovation in traditional human rights movements (i.e., the LGBTQ rights movement, disability rights, women’s rights, drug policy reform, etc.)
  • youth participation and civic engagement particularly around elections
  • youth-led movements
  • youth-led work in the field of justice (for example, policing, pretrial detention, incarcerated youth, or alternative sentencing)
  • youth tactics in advocacy and awareness raising (for example new media, arts activism, peer-to-peer networks, etc.) around human rights issues
  • youth in closed or transitional societies

Scholarship

Fellows will receive a stipend of $35,000–50,000 depending on experience and current income. The fellowship will also cover some travel and project costs related to the fellows’ work to be discussed.

How to apply?

All interested applicants should complete the online application form and submit supporting materials for consideration. Applicants may submit a project proposal or other materials in a language other than English, as long as they also submit an English translation. Certified translations are strongly recommended.

Once the initial information has been entered, applicants receive login details and an ID number that allows them to make additions and revisions to the form until materials are submitted. The ID number should be quoted in any correspondence. The program strongly encourages applicants to submit only electronic supporting materials. However, if applicants have hard copy materials that they feel are essential to the evaluation of their project, they can list these at the end of the project proposal. Fellowship staff will reach out to applicants should it be necessary to review these materials.

Some of the most valuable assets we have in the fight against sex trafficking are the energy and compassion of our youth. This year the Demand Change Project will honor the dedication and commitment of local youth; by inviting your full participation in the conference, including a day of special programming for young abolitionists ages 14-23.

For the Youth Engagement Forum, Breaking Free will partner with Gustavus Adolphus College’s social justice theater troupe, I Am We Are, to creatively engage youth in learning about the signs of sex trafficking and how you can intervene safely and effectively. Join us!
