The LAF Fellowship for Innovation and Leadership 2017-2018

Description

The LAF Fellowship for Innovation and Leadership was created to expand opportunities for research and to nurture and inspire mid-career and senior-level landscape architecture professionals toward the following goals:

  • Support Innovation in Landscape Architecture

As we confront increasingly complex and interrelated environmental, social, and economic challenges of the 21st century, this fellowship brings together a diverse group of landscape architecture professionals from public, private, academic, non-profit, and other sectors to develop and test new ideas in support of the preservation, improvement and enhancement of the environment. It is an entrepreneurial investment in the next ideas that will drive the future of our profession.

  • Cultivate Transformational Leadership in Landscape Architecture

Effective innovation requires criticality, courage, and profound insights into the world in which we live. Fellows will be tasked with building leadership capacity during their fellowship year.

Fellows will take advantage of LAF’s broad reach and network within the discipline and be expected to present their ideas; engage in critical discussion; and, collaborate with leading academics, practitioners, affiliated organizations and industry partners. Additionally, fellows will be expected to share their work strategically with the public through an appropriate format that will advance the profession’s position as a global thought leader while affecting positive change for the planet and its inhabitants.

The Fellowship also aims to build capacity for leadership through intergenerational mentorship. A cohort of fellows and recent LAF Olmsted Scholars will be brought together over the course of the year. Fellows will present and discuss ideas with the intergenerational team as well as provide guidance and support to exemplary emerging professionals towards the pursuit of their ideas and future endeavors.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in landscape architecture. For those with degrees from colleges/universities in the U.S. and Canada, the landscape architecture program must be LAAB- or LAAC-accredited. For those outside of the U.S. and Canada, in locations where landscape architecture is not a recognized degree, a degree in a related discipline is acceptable, provided that the applicant works as a landscape architect.   • Applicants must have a minimum of 6 years of professional experience in landscape architecture. This experience can include all types of practice — private, public, academic, non-profit, service, multi-disciplinary, and other.
  • Applicants must be able to communicate in written and spoken English at an advanced/professional level and provide evidence of proficiency.
  • Applicants must be able to dedicate time to the fellowship and proposed project. They will be required to obtain a letter of support from their employers for time-off from their regular employment.
  • Current LAF staff and members of the LAF Board of Directors are not eligible. Former staff and former members of the LAF Board of Directors who meet the above requirements are eligible.
  • Teams may apply for the Fellowship, provided that the Team Lead meets the above requirements. There are no restrictions on the size of the team. If selected, the team will share the $25,000 award.

Fellowship

Fellows are required to participate in 3 three-day residencies in Washington, D.C. over the course of the fellowship year. Full attendance and participation in each of the residencies is crucial to the success of the Fellowship and is mandatory to receive funding. Travel stipends are provided. The first and last residencies take place in the spring and coincide with the LAF Board of Directors meeting.

Residencies consist of presentations and discussions by Fellows and participating Olmsted Scholars, with invited critics that may include academics, practitioners, representatives of affiliated organizations, industry partners, and past and present members of the LAF Board of Directors. The goal of the residencies is two-pronged: to facilitate project development and guide transformational leadership.

Project Development

  • Facilitate the realization of each Fellow’s project proposal
  • Provide inquiry that raises questions and provides a testing ground
  • Help identify barriers and remove obstacles to project success
  • Provide constructive feedback and critical review
  • Help Fellows identify next steps

Transformational Leadership

  • Foster camaraderie among Fellows
  • Discover each Fellow’s intrinsic motivation
  • Support Fellows through non-judgmental, respectful communication
  • Mentor, inspire, and teach one another

TU Delft Excellence Scholarships, Netherlands

World Youth Conference 2016 in India

Description

The World Youth Conference 2016, “Youth for Sustainable Development” will take place from 12 to 14 November, 2016 in New Delhi, India. The Conference has a unique aim of producing a joint outcome document between states and youth, called ‘New Delhi Action Plan’.

The Conference is expected to bring together 1500 participants, half of them young people, and 150 of them will come from marginalised backgrounds, making the conference one of the most well represented youth events at the global level. The pre-conference process is led by an independent international youth task force which represents major global youth organisations and regional platforms ensuring regional and gender balance.

Eligibility

The international youth delegates will be selected according to these criteria:

  • Between 18 and 30
  • Well versed in current national/international youth policies and/or development debates
  • Willing and motivated to prepare the WYC together with other young people through involving in/conducting consultations to take other young people’s views to the WYC
  • Willing to ensure follow-up to the WYC through dissemination of outcomes and taking part in the implementation of the outcome document
  • Able to work in English
  • Supported by an organisation/community that can endorse you as a delegate (whenever possible)

Please not that gender and regional balance will be taken into account in the selection.
The role of youth delegates:

  • To represent their constituencies during the WYC 2016 and actively take part in the conference programme
  • To prepare for the WYC 2016 together with their constituencies through the organisation of consultations and other pre-conference programmes
  • To actively follow-up the WYC2016

Call for Applications “A New NATO for New Challenges? ” in Berlin, Germany

Description

On November 14, the German Atlantic Association, the Federal Academy for Security Policy, and the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Berlin co-host an international conference in Berlin addressing the outcomes of the NATO Summit in Warsaw 2016 against the background of rapid changes in the alliance’s security environment. Supported by the Press and Information Office of the Federal Government and NATO, high-ranking politicians, diplomats, military officials, and representatives from academia and civil society, will discuss the implementation process as well as future challenges to the alliance.

In order to foster the understanding of security politics, to establish an international dialogue among the younger generation, and to connect emerging leaders from NATO member and partner countries with senior decision-makers, YATA Germany will host a seminar from 12 – 14 November 2016 focusing on key issues of transatlantic security. In an open and competitive call for panels, the members of YATA Germany chose three topics on the basis of their ideas and expectations through the lens of NATO’s future:

✅ “How to deter digital warriors? NATO and the cyberspace”

✅  “In for the long run? NATO’s future role in crisis management”

✅  “Enlargement, enablement, entrapment? NATO’s future approach to cooperative security”

To each session, senior political and military experts will be invited to discuss with the group the ideas and recommendations of young scholars and experts in the field.

Given the special location of the conference, we are happy to provide our guests with an exclusive tour of the German capital on November 12. All NATO’s Future seminar participants will also participate in the main conference “NATO 4.0 – A new NATO for new Challenges?” on November 14 at the Hotel Adlon Kempinski, including the closing reception at the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Berlin.

  • Students with an academic background in International Relations and Security Studies and young professionals who have begun a career in a related field

💡 There is no participation fee for the seminar. YATA Germany will offer travel reimbursements of up to €100/€200 (national/international), provided that participants will choose affordable travel options. We will also provide accommodation in central Berlin from November 12 to 15.

Harvard Model Congress Asia 2017, Hong Kong, China

Harvard Model Congress Asia is a global conference where international high school students learn and experience government while playing the roles of officials in the United States government and several international political bodies. HMC Asia strives to educate and foster the next generation of global leaders by offering a truly interactive program, featuring one-on-one communication with Harvard students, debate on pressing global issues, and cross-cultural connections among delegates from throughout Asia and around the world.

Students from more than twenty nations converge at the conference and work together to address challenges facing governments across the world. At HMCA students discuss contemporary political issues, draft policy, report news stories, and decide court cases, all under the guidance of Harvard University students. HMC Asia is an officially recognized and wholly student-run organization at Harvard College. HMCA teaches students about government and international relations by providing insights into pressing global issues and by offering a forum to discuss possible solutions. HMCA’s staff of talented Harvard undergraduate students, selected after a competitive application process, strives to encourage a passion for government and international relations by simulating international organizations and the United States government.

Costs

  • Delegate Fee: USD 295/person;
  • For HMCA 2017, both full scholarships (covers delegate fee, lodging, and transportation costs) and partial scholarships (covers delegate fee) will be awarded to support delegates for whom financial need would be a barrier to attendance;
  • Harvard Model Congress relies on student participant fees to cover all of our costs, which range from staff transportation to printed materials. The delegate fee includes all aspects of the conference (with the exception of hotel accommodations and meals), as well as an HMC Asia 2017 T-shirt. This fee must be paid for each delegate who is attending the conference. Delegate fees must be paid within 2 weeks of registering for the conference. Roles will not be assigned until the delegate fee is paid.

The 2016 GCSP Prize for Innovation in Global Security

Prize: a cash award of CHF 10,000, as well as a ceremonial awards dinner in Geneva, including all travel and accommodation expenses covered by the GCSP.

Description

In 2015, under the umbrella of its Creativity and Innovation Initiative, the GCSP and its Geopolitics and Global Futures Programme established a prize in order to recognise deserving individuals or organisations that have an innovative approach to addressing international security challenges.

The prize is designed to reach across all relevant disciplines and fields. It seeks to reward the most inspiring, innovative and ground-breaking contribution of the year, whether this comes in the form of an initiative, invention, research publication, or organisation.

The prize consists of a cash award of CHF 10’000, a ceremonial awards dinner in Geneva, and all travel expenses for the winner.

The 1st GCSP Prize for Innovation in Global Security was awarded on 26 November 2015 to a project entitled “Improve the Protection of Children in Conflict – Expanding the function of the ‘Children and Armed Conflict Mobile Application’ towards MRM practitioners in the field”.

Eligibility

  1. The prize is awarded for a project or body of work by any individual, or group of individuals, or organisation, (from private or public sectors) which contributes to global security, and has been submitted for consideration according to these rules and regulations. No more than one submission per applicant is allowed.
  2. Submissions may come from any country, but the project should go beyond national borders in its reach or thinking

Prize

  • The Prize is CHF 10’000 in cash, and no equivalent or alternative will be provided. The prize will be awarded to the winner at a Gala Dinner ceremony in Geneva. In addition to the prize, all travel to, and attendance at the Gala Dinner, will be paid by the GCSP. Travel includes, where applicable, standard or economy-class round-trip air travel to Geneva from the nearest international airport, and overnight accommodation. This applies to the winner, or a representative of the winning individual or group. Travel will be organised and paid for by the organisers in coordination with the winner, who agrees to provide the relevant personal details necessary for organising such travel.

Application

Applications will be evaluated by a panel of judges – senior practitioners from international organisations, governments and the private sector. The panel will be co-chaired by the GCSP director, Ambassador Christian Dussey, and the Head of the Geopolitics and Global Futures Programme, Professor Nayef Al-Rodhan. The winner will be announced at an award ceremony held in Geneva on 17 November 2016.

UNIDO’s 50th Anniversary Global Start-up Business Plan Contest

Open to:  potential and existing entrepreneur(s), aged between 18-35, with a new business idea or startup in an early stage
Award:  1st Place 15,000 USD / 2nd Place 10,000 USD / 3rd Place 5,000 USD

Description

The Global Start-up Business Plan Competition (GSBPC) aims to stimulate and unleash the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation among aspiring and existing entrepreneurs with ideas that contribute to their personal economic benefit and towards developing their communities.

The main points to focus on are:

  • The business idea – uniqueness, viability, relevance;
  • The product and services – description, impact, market need;
  • Competitor analysis – description, opportunities;
  • Target market – definition;
  • Marketing plan – nature, relevance, objectives;
  • Start-up costs and financials.

The three participants or teams with the best business plans will be invited to attend the prize-winners’ event in Vienna on 21 to 25 November 2016, during the celebration of UNIDO’s 50th Anniversary.

Eligibility

  • Participants must be aged between 18 and 35;
  • Entrepreneurs with a new business idea;
  • An existing entrepreneur(s) with a startup in its early stages;
  • Participants must use the Business Plan Template;
  • Individuals or teams of maximum 3 members;
  • Applications must be completed in English.

Award

The winner  will receive the following start-up capital: 

  • 1st Place: 15,000 USD;
  • 2nd Place: 10,000 USD;
  • 3rd Place: 5,000 USD.

All three winners will additionally be rewarded with:

  • A UNIDO certificate;
  • Increased visibility for their start-up;
  • A round-trip from home country to the UNIDO Headquarters in Vienna, Austria;
  • Accommodation and health insurance in Vienna (from the 21 to 25 November 2016).

The Malaysian International Scholarship (MIS) for Foreign Students in Malaysia, 2016-2017

Description

The Malaysian International Scholarship (MIS) is an initiative by the Malaysian Government to attract the best brain from around the world to pursue advanced academic studies in Malaysia. This scholarship aims to support Malaysian Government’s effort to attract, motivate and retain talented human capital from abroad.

Talented international students with excellent academic records and outstanding co-curricular backgrounds are welcomed to apply for this scholarship and further their studies in any selected and well-established Malaysian public and private universities. This scholarship is divided into two (2) categories of study: Postgraduate and Post-doctoral Studies.

Applicants must be obtained a minimum of Second Class Upper (Honours) or a CGPA of 3.5/4.0at Bachelor Degree Level for Masters Degree applicants and for PhD candidates must possess CGPA 3.5/4.0 or very good result at Masters degree level in a similar field of intended PhD study.

Eligibility

· To be eligible for Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS), applicants must fit the following criteria:-

  1. Not be more than 40 years (Postgraduate) and 45 years (Post-doctoral) of age during application.
  2. Obtained a minimum of Second Class Upper (Honours) or a CGPA of 3.5/4.0at Bachelor Degree Level for Masters Degree applicants and for PhD candidates must possess CGPA 3.5/4.0 or very good result at Masters degree level in a similar field of intended PhD study. In addition, for post-doctoral programme, the selection will be evaluated based on the number of books produced, refereed/non refereed journals, portfolio and patent copyright. The Post-Doctoral candidate must have excellent reputation in research and possesses knowledge related to the research to be carried out.
  3. Took one of the following English Language Proficiency Test not more than two years before the date of application. The list of tests and minimum scores required:
    1. IELTS Academic Test with a score of at least 6.5; or
    2. TOEFL paper-based test with a score of at least 580 or computer-based test with a score of at least 230 or internet-based test with a score at least 92.
  4. In excellent health condition and certified by a Certified Doctor/Medical Professional. The cost of medical examination is to be borne by the applicants.
  5. Wrote a proposal that is relevant to the field of studies.
  6. Has applied for and gained admission to postgraduate and post-doctoral studies in Malaysia (conditional letters of offer will be accepted at the time of application or has a confirmation of acceptance or affiliation with the Universities in Malaysia).

Scholarship

Each scholarship consists of:

  • Air tickets from recipient’s capital city to Malaysia
  • An approved tuition fees
  • Monthly maintenance allowance
  • Annual grant for books and internal travel
  • Medical / Health Insurance
