Young Leaders Visitors Program 2014

Open to: Young leaders and democracy workers from Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, West Bank-Gaza, Yemen or Sweden
Venue: Sweden May 19-June 6, 2014 and Middle East and North Africa November 2-8, 2014

The main aim of YLVP is to lay a foundation for dialogue, mutual understanding and knowledge sharing among young leaders from Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, West Bank-Gaza, Yemen and Sweden. YLVP strives to strengthen the participants in their aims to drive processes for social change in their respective contexts.

Program structure

Module 1: YLVP in Sweden (three weeks) May 19-June 6, 2014 
Intercultural leadership training with lectures, seminars and workshops providing the participants with new skills and perspectives in the fields of transparency, democracy and human rights. Practical group assignments and project work run throughout the module in combination with tailor-made study visits to relevant Swedish authorities, organizations and institutions.

Module 2: YLVP in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region (one week) November 2-8, 2014
Offers an opportunity to maintain, build and expand your network. All participants, including those from Sweden, will regroup to discuss and evaluate their involvement in the program and report back on the development of the individual project works. Workshops and seminars with experts from the region, including representatives from the YLVP alumni network, who are invited to share their expertise and practical experience from work in the field.

Eligibility

  • You are an engaged leader within the spheres of society, culture, politics or media.
  • You are working actively for democracy and human rights.
  • You are between 20-32 years old (at the time of the start of the program).
  • You have a good working knowledge of both written and spoken English.
  • You are from Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, West Bank-Gaza, Yemen or Sweden.

Application process

Submit your application by sending the YLVP Application form 2014 together with your CV in English to YLVP13@si.se by December 13. Only applicants who have submitted a complete application will be considered for the program. A complete application consists of:

  1. A completed YLVP Application Form 2014 in English, including your contact details and the contact details of two reference persons.
  2. An updated CV in English

Please note that the reference persons should be someone who knows your work in the areas of democracy and human rights. We may contact the reference persons of the applicants who are selected for an interview. We only need the contact details of the references (name, job title, telephone number and email), i.e. no letters of recommendation. We accept references who speak English, Arabic or French. Due to the large number of applications that we receive, we are unfortunately not able to send personal replies to all applicants. Hence, if you have not heard from us by February 27, 2014, you have not been accepted to the Young Leaders Visitors Program. However, you are more than welcome to apply again for next year’s program.

Costs

Accommodation, food and travel
All costs related to accommodation, food and transport during the YLVP are covered by the Swedish Institute. The Swedish Institute will also arrange and pay for your air travel to and from Sweden and to the location of the second module of the program in the MENA region. Participants are themselves responsible for costs related to transport within their own countries.

Insurance
During the program in Sweden all participants will be insured against acute illness and accident through the Swedish State Group Insurance and personal insurance by The Swedish Legal, Financial and Administrative Service Agency (Kammarkollegiet). For the second module somewhere in the MENA region, all participants are kindly requested to purchase a travel insurance in their respective countries. The Swedish Institute will reimburse participants for the cost of the insurance later.

Visa
Participants are responsible for obtaining their visas in good time before departure to Sweden and other relevant countries. The Swedish Institute will contact all concerned embassies in order to facilitate the application process. When applying for a visa the Swedish Institute will provide the participants with a letter of invitation and an insurance certificate, and will also cover the application cost. Student Film Festival on Women’s Issues

College and high school students can submit their short films and win a US$5,000 cash prize.

The Girls Impact the World Film Festival, presented by the Harvard College Social Innovation Collaborativeand Connecther, is a film festival and scholarship program for high school and undergraduate college students.

The festival accepts short films that either raise awareness or propose solutions to a variety of global women’s issues, including maternal health, microfinance initiatives, child-marriage, sex-trafficking and poverty alleviation.

Films should be 3 to 5 minutes long and can be narrative, documentary, investigative reporting, music video, animation, or curated film (film collage).

The grand-prize winner, first and second runners-up will receive US$5,000, US$2,500, and US$1,000, respectively, along with Adobe Production Premium CS6. An internship will be awarded to the grand-prize and first-runner up winners. Other winners will be awarded cash prizes and gifts.

Applicants must be 25 or under and currently enrolled undergraduates or full-time high school students.

The deadline is Dec. 31.

College Scholarships: The When, Where and How


Dear College Made Simple Reader,

Sorting through the piles of admissions material, logging thousands of miles of travel for open houses, worrying about SAT scores and report cards…

It doesn’t leave families with a lot of time to find a good deal when it comes to paying for college.

But in the midst of the college admissions whirlwind, there are ways to help make your student’s college tuition as affordable as possible.

It comes down to three core tasks:

  1. Understanding the right way to go after scholarships.
  2. Learning how to taking advantage of every college funding strategy available that could potentially lower your college costs by thousands of dollars.
  3. Selecting the colleges that give you the most money – (in other words, more free money and fewer loans).

How much success you have reaching these goals will play a huge role in how much you pay for college.

Today let’s take a close look at the first goal: scholarships.

College Scholarships: The When, Where and How

If your student is a candidate for scholarship money, don’t make the mistake of thinking that a simple application and transcript is all it takes.

There’s definitely an art to applying for scholarship funds.

WHEN: The earlier the better. The earliest deadlines for scholarships are in October and most are due at the latest by March.

Remember, that money follows you wherever you go. So don’t think you have to have a school chosen before applying. It spends the same way at any college.

If you miss a scholarship deadline, you’re often times out of luck. So get those applications in ASAP. That way if you have any errors or changes you need to make, you still have some wiggle room. Waiting until the last minute leaves you no margin for error.

Above all, remember that most scholarship money is first come, first served. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. So beat the rush, get there early and get as much of it as you can.


WHERE: Choosing the right scholarship to apply for can be a huge drain on time. Don’t waste your time with the wrong ones.

The best way to find the perfect match is to make a list of your academic, athletic or extracurricular qualifications. Then find the grants that you stand the best chance of winning based off of that.

Even if the money is great with the other scholarships, it doesn’t pay to spend time trying to compete when there are other applicants far better suited.

HOW: Knowing the rules of a particular college’s financial aid office are key when it comes to scholarship money.

Some will take any grants you win and subtract them from financial aid packages. Some will deduct them from student loans or work study programs. And some will even let you subtract the scholarship amount from your expected family contribution.

That means more financial aid for you.

In short, knowing the rules can mean thousands of dollars in savings.
