Café Babel Greece is inviting entries to the Investigative Journalist Award. The competition seeks to highlight journalistic research with a focus on Greek society, politics, economy or the environment.

We believe that the existence of such an award is essential because it will reward and encourage young professionals who are working for the sake of common good and public interest and who investigate and monitor the work and decisions of Greek authorities, of civil society, of legal and natural persons currently operating in Greek territory as well as the impact and the consequences of their actions.

Eligibility

Journalists ages 18 to 30 from around the world can compete for an award.

Human Rights Advocates Program 2015, USA

The Institute for the Study of Human Rights (ISHR) at Columbia University is pleased to open the application for the 2015 Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP).

HRAP is the flagship training program of ISHR at Columbia University. Established in 1978 at Columbia University, ISHR is committed to three core goals: providing excellent human rights education to Columbia students, fostering innovative interdisciplinary academic research, and offering its expertise in capacity building to human rights leaders, organizations, and universities around the world.

HRAP targets proven human rights leaders. The Program features a four-month residency at Columbia University with a structured curriculum of advocacy, networking, skills building, and academic coursework tailored to the Advocates’ professional interests and needs. Since 1989, 281 advocates from more than 80 countries have honed their skills, gained knowledge and expanded their networks through the program.

Eligibility

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

* Lawyers, journalists, doctors, teachers, social workers, community organizers, and other human rights activists working with NGOs on issues including sexual and gender-based violence, domestic violence, minority rights, LGBT rights, labor rights, migration, health, social exclusion, environmental justice, and corporate social accountability can apply to participate in the program;
* Applicants should be actively working at the grassroots-level;
* Applicants should be endorsed by their organizations and they should commit themselves to return back to their organization after the end of the program;
* Preference will be given to those who did not have any previous opportunity to travel and study abroad;
* Full-time students or government officials will not be considere

The Joan Shorenstein Fellowship Program

Description

The Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government is accepting applications for the Joan Shorenstein Center Fellowship. The mission of the Joan Shorenstein Fellowship Program is to advance research in the field of media, politics and public policy; facilitate a dialogue among journalists, scholars, policymakers and students; provide an opportunity for reflection; and create a vibrant and long-lasting community of scholars and practitioners. The primary focus for a Fellow is to research, write and publish a paper on a media/politics topic. It is a highly selective program; only a very small percentage of applicants are accepted.

The Center hosts eight one-semester residential fellowships each year (four per semester). Fellows conduct research; engage with students, faculty and the Harvard community; and participate in the various events associated with the Shorenstein Center. Fellows’ research and ideas are presented at weekly research meetings where they discuss and defend their project before a group of peers. Recent projects have been published in theColumbia Journalism ReviewForeign AffairsThe New Republic and Fortune magazine and have been reported on inThe New York Times.

Since 1986, the Fellowship Program has brought more than 250 accomplished journalists, scholars and politicians from around the world to the Center. Joan Shorenstein Fellows work closely with Harvard students and often serve as longtime mentors. Past Shorenstein Fellows include TV news anchors; national and international print, radio and television reporters; digital news innovators; presidential media advisors; leading scholars and policy analysts.

Eligibility

1. Must be a full-time journalist, politician, scholar or policymaker currently active in the field.

  • Journalist: Reporter, editor, producer with a minimum of five years experience at a news organization (print, broadcast, Internet) immediately prior to submitting Fellowship application.
  • Politician: Someone who has campaigned and been elected to a national or high-level state office.
  • Scholar: Tenured or tenure-track professor in political science, political communication, journalism, international political communication with a strong record of book and journal publications. The applicant must be employed by a college, university or research institution for seven years or more.
  • Policymaker: High-level official in a cabinet office or adviser to a candidate for national office. Minimum 10 years experience in equivalent role.

2. Must be available to be in residence, full-time, for one semester (September through December or February through May) in Cambridge, MA.

3. The applicant should not have participated in another fellowship within the two years prior to their preferred semester at Harvard.

4. Applicants must be fluent in English – listening, reading, writing and speaking. Non-native English speakers must provide TOEFL or IELTS score.

Applicants who do not meet these requirements cannot be considered.

Fellowship

Stipend is $30,000 for one semester. Travel and living expenses are not covered by the Shorenstein Center. Office space, computer and telephone are provided.

The CrossCulture Internships Program 2015

Description

The CrossCulture Internships program, launched by the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa,) is an intercultural exchange program. It enables internships for young professionals and volunteers from the participating countries and aims to strengthen networks between Germany and the Islamic world.

Internships last between eight weeks and three months and are offered in the following work areas: society & education; legal dialogue, justice & human rights; international politics & civic education; environment; economy & development cooperation; and media, culture & art.

Eligibility

Professionals and volunteers ages 23 to 45 from Germany, South and Central Asia, and other Islamic countries can participate in this exchange program.

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of the German language is desirable.

Remuneration

Internships cover a monthly scholarship of EU550, visa fees, health insurance and accommodations.

The G(irls)20 Summit 2015 in Istanbul, Turkey

Description

The 2015 G(irls)20 Summit will be held in Istanbul, Turkey.  While exact dates have not yet been set, we anticipate that the 6th Summit will take place late September/early October.

Five Summits have taken place : Toronto, 2010; Paris, 2011; Mexico City, 2012; Moscow, 2013 and Sydney, Australia (2014)..  Each Summit produces a communique which is presented to the G20 Leaders, Ministers of Industry, Health, Innovation, Economic Development and Foreign Affairs and Ambassadors. Each Summit also results in the development of community based initiatives led by the delegates.

Delegates will be required to participate before Summit training (media & leadership assessment), connect with the G(irls)20 alumni and complete a reading package to be familiar with the G20 process and issues and G(irls)20 partners.

While in Turkey, delegates will attend skills building training sessions, hear from a global panel of experts and work toward a set of recommendations for G20 Leaders.

Eligibility

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • female, 18-23 years of age (at the time of the Summit);
  • live and hold citizenship in one of the G20 member countries plus the Afghanistan, African Union, Azerbaijan*, the European Union,  Pakistan, MENA region, Spain* or Singapore*.  (These represent the members of the G20 plus countries invited by the Government of Turkey)
  • have an interest in the economic advancement of girls and women;
  • can commit to launching a post Summit initiative/project in your own community;
  • have parental or guardian permission to travel to Turkey and to fully participate in the summit for the duration of the Summit.  This may require absence from school;
  • consent to appear in any and all media; and,
  • can obtain valid visa and passport for travel by March 31, 2015.

LANGUAGE:  English language proficiency, both verbal and written, is required.  The Summit will be conducted in English and Turkish. All final delegates will have a phone interview in which their language skills will be evaluated.

Costs

Please note that it will be the responsibility of the delegate to arrange her own ground transportation to and from her home and the airport as well as passport and visas (some countries will require a visa).

The following will be provided to all G(irls)20 Summit Delegates:

  • Summit learning materials and supplies;
  • Return economy air travel arrangements, from the closest international airport to the delegate’s home to Istanbul;
  • Accommodations while in Turkey (in transit accommodations to be covered by the delegate);
  • Meals – breakfast, lunch, dinner and refreshments each day;
  • All ground transportation while in Turkey.

The Romanian State Scholarships to foreign citizens 2015- 2016

Description

Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of National Education, in keeping with Romanian current legislation offer 85 scholarships for under- and post-graduate studies in Romania to citizens of non-EU countries. 

The scholarships are granted for three levels of study:

  1. for the first cycle (licenta): dedicated to graduates of high schools or of equivalent pre-university systems, as well as to candidates who require the equivalent of partial studies and the continuation of their studies in Romania. The complete cycle of university studies lasts for 3 to 6 years, according to the specific requirements of the chosen faculty, and ends with a final examination (licenta);
  2. for the 2nd cycle (master): dedicated to graduates of university/post graduate studies; it lasts for 1,5 to 2 years and ends with a dissertation;
  3. for the 3rd cycle (doctorate): dedicated to the graduates of university/postgraduate studies (i.e. master); it lasts for 3-4 years, in keeping with the specific requirements of the chosen faculty, and ends with a doctor’s thesis.

Priority will be given to the candidates applying for: political and administrative sciences, education studies, Romanian culture and civilization, journalism, technical studies, oil and gas, agricultural studies, veterinary medicine, architecture, music, arts, music.

The study language is the Romanian language. The candidates who do not know Romanian are offered one supplementary preparatory year to study the language.

Eligibility

Candidates from non-EU states. Priority is given to citizens from non-EU states with which Romania does not have cultural and education cooperation agreements.

Scholarship

  • free-of-charge tuition;
  • free-of-charge accommodation;
  • financial support – a monthly amount representing :
    • EUR 65 per month, for the under-graduate students (1st cycle),
    • EUR 75 per month, for post-graduate students (master degrees and specialization) 2nd cycle
    • EUR 85 per month, for post graduate students (doctor’s degree) 3rd cycle.

To get all necessary information about the scholarships (conditions, necessary documents, enrollment calendar) and to submit their application files, the candidates should apply directly to:

  • the Romanian diplomatic missions accredited to the candidate’s country of origin or of residence or to
  • the diplomatic mission of candidate’s state of origin accredited to Bucharest

The deadline for submitting the application files is established by each diplomatic mission. The candidate should enquire at the diplomatic mission about the enrollment calendar, starting 3 December 2014. Foreign diplomatic missions accredited to Bucharest must send the application files to Ministry of Foreign Affairs by 15 March 2015, at the latest.

The Terra Summer Residency Fellowships for Artists

Description

Each summer the Terra Foundation offers ten residential fellowships for emerging artists and doctoral scholars in the history of American art and visual culture at its properties in Giverny, France. The Terra Summer Residency (TSR) offers opportunities to pursue individual work within a framework of interdisciplinary exchange and cross-cultural dialogue. During this 9-week period, fellows interact regularly with invited senior advisors and guest lecturers, who direct weekly seminars and hold individual meetings. Private visits to exhibitions and attendance of special conferences are also proposed. In addition to the fellowship stipend, fellows are provided with on-site lodging, working facilities and lunches for the duration of the residency. At the end of the program, fellows share the work that was accomplished during the residency and the artists present their work in the open studios. The program encourages fellows to make lifelong connections and become part of the international alumni community of Terra fellows.

Eligibility

Candidates worldwide can apply. Applicants must be either:

  • A visual artist with a master’s degree or its equivalent at the time of application. Preference is given to applicants who have completed their degree within the past five years.
  • A doctoral candidate researching American art and visual culture prior to 1980 within the United States or in the context of international artistic exchange. Candidates should be at an advanced stage of their doctoral research and writing.

Fellowship

Terra Summer Residency fellows receive:

  • A $5,000 stipend (artists receive an additional $300 for the purchase of materials);
  • A travel contribution (up to $250 for individuals traveling from Europe; up to $1,000 for individuals traveling from outside Europe); and
  • Lodging in the Terra Foundation residences and daily lunches

The Summer Peacebuilding Program 2015 in California, United States

We are excited to launch the Summer Peacebuilding Program (SPP), a three-week long intensive training program designed to bridge the theory and practice of building peace in societies that are emerging from conflict, violence or war.

SPP builds on the ‘Peace’ dimension that was explored for two years (2013 and 2014) in the Peace, Trade and Development program. SPP provides an opportunity for participants to learn from the experiences and approaches of scholars and practitioners who work on some of the most difficult challenges our world faces today, including: resolving conflict, ending all forms of violence, providing social justice, and creating more secure and developed societies by transforming the conditions and relationships of conflict. SPP therefore welcomes all those interested in exploring the above-mentioned topics  through a process of self-reflection, gathering of theoretical and conceptual data and its application to real world problems.

The 2015 program will run from July 27 to August 14, 2015. The first week of SPP is residential at the Mount Madonna Center for the Creative Arts and Sciences (http://www.mountmadonna.org/) in Watsonville, CA. The second and third weeks of SPP will be held at the MIIS campus (www.miis.edu) in Monterey with a lodging option within walking distance to campus.

Eligibility

Students and practitioners in the field of conflict, peace, development and security studies are eligible to apply.

Costs

The SPP program cost, which covers lodging for three weeks, board for week one and all course related expenses for three weeks is USD 3500. Course fees for Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) students are USD 3000. Students can receive academic credits for the program (paying additional tuition fees as required by their own educational institution)

Scholarships

There are two types of scholarships available:

An early bird discount. Those applying before midnight on Feb. 15, 2015 can take USD 250 off the program cost.There are two merit scholarships of USD 500 available to two highly qualified and deserving candidates. Candidates must send in a letter along with their application addressing the scholarship criteria. Deservedness will be decided using the following criteria:

  1. High GPA/ Strong academic record
  2. Work experience in the field of Conflict Studies
  3. Displays strong motivation to work in the field of Conflict Studies
  4. Financial Constraints

The two scholarships may not be combined. Scholarship decisions will be made by March 15, 2015. Scholarships are not available to MIIS students.
