Description

The one-year program is a competitive fellowship enabling emerging social entrepreneurs to plan and implement their own ventures. Fellows receive start-up training, engage with current experts, and create change by implementing their social start-ups in their your own communities.The program takes place in two phases, the ten-week Incubation Phase on campus in Hamburg and the ten-month Implementation Phase in the Fellows’ home countries. During the Incubation Phase they will develop their individual business plans and next to that, solve a real life group Challenge posed by a company or organization to learn hands-on what it takes to be an entrepreneur and how to successfully take action. During the Implementation Phase each Fellow starts his/her own mission-driven venture.

H&M Germany challenges you to create an innovative packaging system for one of its product lines! The goal is to minimize waste and energy, optimize the handling process and create maximum recycling and upcycling opportunities along the way. The solution should aim to be globally scalable and economically viable. The impact of the developed solution will be evaluated during a one-week testing phase, delivering goods from the central German warehouse to H&M stores in Hamburg.

Eligibility

The DO School  is seeking highly motivated and talented emerging social entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs age 21 to 31. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a track record of being passionate about addressing social issues and creating and spreading innovative social change. We welcome applications from people with all educational and socioeconomic backgrounds. Successful applicants are determined and willing to use our program to start new, or grow existing ventures, or implement a new initiative within a larger organization. The DO School program is ideal for outstanding mission-driven people who are looking for the tools, skills, and mentoring to launch a social start-up

Tuition Fee & Fellowship

The DO School fellowship is a highly subsidized program, which means participants pay only a small portion of the actual costs as their tuition fee. For One-Year Programs in Hamburg the tuition fee is 1,000 € excluding travel and living expenses throughout the Incubation Phase in Hamburg. This only applies to Fellows who can afford to pay the full tuition and their own costs, for everyone else there is financial aid available for both the tuition fee and the personal costs during the Incubation Phase of the One-Year Program. Fellow selection is need-blind. This means we select Fellows regardless of their financial circumstances and make sure that everyone who is selected can also participate in the program. If you need financial aid there is a separate form in the application process that you can fill out. If you are accepted you will then automatically receive an individualized partial or full financial aid offer. The offer will be based on your personal needs, however, we expect all candidates to demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit and actively contribute to part of their own costs through their own fundraising activities.

ILO and J-PAL Course on Evaluating Social Programs

Description

The ILO and J-PAL Executive Education course is a five-day training on evaluating social programs which will provide participants with a thorough understanding of randomized evaluations and pragmatic, step-by-step guidance for conducting their own evaluations. Through a combination of lectures and case studies from real randomized evaluations, the course will focus on the benefits and methods of randomization, choosing an appropriate sample size, and common threats and pitfalls to the validity of the experiment.

While the course is centered around the why, how, and when of randomized evaluations, it will also discuss the importance of a needs assessment, measuring outcomes effectively, quality control, and monitoring methods that are useful for all kinds of evaluations. The course also provides the opportunity to learn from and interact with ILO and J-PAL affiliated researchers and practitioners in the region.

Youth unemployment rates are disproportionality high in many regions of the world, particularly in the Middle East. In the face of this challenge, policymakers and practitioners need more evidence on which social programs work and why, especially for youth labor market programs. This course is intended to equip academics, evaluators, implementers, and researchers with the skills necessary to produce and consume rigorous impact evaluations.

The course will take place at the American University of Sharjah. Information on visas can be found on the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Visa Information page. This page will be updated as more logistical details are to be confirmed.

Eligibility

The training is open to everyone. Managers and researchers from international development organizations, foundations, governments and non-governmental organizations, trained economists are all encouraged to apply. The course places special emphasis on evaluating labor market programs, although professionals from other sectors and backgrounds will find the course useful.

A necessary prerequisite for this course is relevant experience in statistical tools and impact evaluation. Interested applicants who have already participated in a ILO Evaluation Clinic are especially encouraged to apply, as this course will build upon the skills developed in that course.

Costs

All course fees will be covered by the ILO for applicants who are accepted to the course but course participants will need to pay for their travel, accommodation, and visa. There is a limited number of scholarships available to cover travel and accommodation for participants who demonstrate need. If you are interested in applying for one of these scholarships, please complete the application no later than October 10th, 2014All admission and scholarship decisions will be made on a rolling basis, and participants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Do you enjoy writing? Are you interested in post-communist transition? What are your thoughts on a free trip to Prague?

Transitions (TOL) is inviting students from across the globe to choose a topic relating to the social, political, economic, and cultural transition that has taken place in the last 25 years across the formerly communist countries of Europe and Eurasia.

You are free to choose your topic, your angle, your hook, your hypothesis, your research question, your style; as long as your content addresses post-communist transition in Central Europe, Eastern Europe, the Balkans, the Caucasus, or Central Asia, we will process your submission.

A panel of judges, led by Transitions’ editor in chief will choose the top three undergraduate and top three graduate entries. All of the winning entries will be rolled out in our online magazine, which has an international audience of more than 25,000 monthly readers.

The first place undergraduate and first place graduate writers will win a FREE trip to Prague to attend our fall conference, 25 Years After: The Challenges of Building the Post-Communist Media and Communication Industries, from 20-22 November 2014.*

Co – organised by JEF Europe, JEF Moldova and JEF Belarus, the International Seminar “United Europe – Democracy at all levels” will take place from the 25-30 November in Chisinau, the capital of Moldova.

About JEF: Young European Federalists (JEF, French Jeunes Européens fédéralistes) is a political youth organisation. Active in most European countries and with around 25,000 members, it seeks to promote European integration through the strengthening and democratisation of the European Union (EU). JEF has close ties to the European Movement and the Union of European Federalists and is a full member of the European Youth Forum (YFJ). Former activists of JEF are organised in the Friends of JEF.

Eligibility

Young people aged 18-30 years who are citizens of one of the 47 member states of the Council of Europe + citizens of Belarus. Applications from non-eligible persons will not be taken into account.

No Hate Speech Seminar in Berlin, Germany

Description

SCI Germany in cooperation with the “SAVA Workinggroup” and the “Media Competence Centre Pankow” is organizing the “No Hate Speech” Seminar which will be held in Berlin from 20-29 October 2014. During this seminar the participants will get to know about the “No Hate Speech” movement, which addresses and contradicts hate speech, racism and discrimination in their online expression. The participants will first discuss the topic theoretically by analysing examples. Then, under the guidance of the media competence centre, they will develop an online platform which enables users to react to hate speech creatively and to connect with other activists of the No Hate Speech movement. After the seminar, it is planned to organize an event in each participating country with the aim of popularizing and promoting the platform.

The seminar is open to people interested in the topic coming from Germany and all countries from the Balkan region.

All the costs for food, accommodation and travels inside Berlin are covered by the organizers. Participants will need to cover their own travel expenses.

2015 International Forum for Young Leaders “Human Rights and Leadership”

The next generation of human rights professionals will be required to respond to increasingly complex and systemic global challenges through innovation and ingenuity. Our mission is to foster a network of young leaders who aim to develop accessible solutions to these challenges and advance human rights and access to justice through ethical engagement.

The International Forum for Young Leaders brings together individuals under 30 years of age who have demonstrated their passion for implementing innovative, entrepreneurial solutions to the world’s most pressing problems, and offering them an opportunity to interact and benefit from each other’s experiences. It does this by:

  • Selecting ambitious, persistent young leaders from across the world with the potential to act as change agents in their field, sector, or geographic region;
  • Spreading their ideas about how to tackle major human rights and access to justice challenges and effect wide-scale change; and
  • Supporting an extensive network of former Young Leaders, named McGill Echenberg Fellows, to realize the practical implementation of their vision.

Young Leaders participate in a series of skill-developing sessions, workshops, roundtable discussions, and cultural events aimed at engaging with the spectrum of issues that affect human rights outcomes, in addition to keynotes, panels and debates featuring prominent international human rights voices.

The Forum is at the core of the Fourth Echenberg Family Conference on Human Rights, which will be held at McGill University in Montreal from October 11-17, 2015, and is organized by the Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism. Held in conjunction with the Young Leaders Forum, the Conference will explore the theme of “Human Rights and Leadership” and will focus on individuals and groups who have set themselves apart in their promotion of human rights and access to justice through innovation, entrepreneurship, collaboration and creativity.

Eligibility

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • Be under 30 years of age as of July 31, 2015;
  • Hold a university degree in any field*;
  • Possess high oral proficiency in English; and
  • Have shown leadership, innovation, creativity, and/or entrepreneurship in your area of focus.

*The Conference has made exceptions to this eligibility criterion under exceptional circumstances where applicants have demonstrated a particularly strong fit for the Young Leaders Forum.

Costs

  • For those selected, the Conference will cover all costs, including travel expenses to and from Montreal, accommodation, meals, and visa expenses.

Applications for the Peace Revolution Fellowship in Thailand – Global Peace On The Move XIII – February 11-24 2015 are open now!The fellowship offers a 14 days intensive training program providing participants with deeper insight in the relationship between inner peace and sustainable world peace and enhancing their ability to create peace within their family, professional and social environment.


In addition to our intense meditation practice, participants will gain knowledge of various theoretical approaches that include:

  • Conflict resolution and the role of basic human self-discipline
  • The role of our habits in our daily life and how to improve them; the 5 Rooms  of Life approach
  • The factors that determine our perception to think, act and speak; relation between body and mind

Eligibility

  • Candidates should be 18-30 years old at the time of submitting the application in order to receive the airfare support.
  • Candidates must have completed 42 days of the online self-development program. Note that in order to submit the application form, candidates do not need to have completed the online self-development program.
  • The completed self-development program needs to be current. You may refer to the self-development validity according to the date specified by the fellowship you are applying to. If it is more than 1 year since the self-development program completion, you will have to do it again. If it is more than 6 months but less than 1 year, you will have to submit 15 days more of Inner Peace Time journal.
  • Candidates must have completed at least 1 OFFLINE (with 5 or more participants) and 1 ONLINE (with 10 or more participants) Special Ops.
  • Candidates must have submitted a PIPO Proposal.
  • Candidates have good proficiency in written and spoken English language.

The theme of the International Essay Contest is “Genocide – the dark mark of humanity”.

Essay may be written in the context of legal, political, historical, cultural, economic or any other issue connected to genocide.

We live in times of kaleidoscopic historical change when international law and settled after World War II world order once again find themselves threatened and become as the object of flagrant violations. The issue of responsibility of particular subjects of international relations and specific individuals for outright criminal actions that harm the civilized humanity is actual and raised once again.

In this regard, Ukraine based NGO “Society Initiatives Institute” seeks to eliminate embarrassing information void in the social, cultural and spiritual spheres, formed around the figure of the scientist, lawyer, expert on international law Raphael Lemkin, scholar who created and implemented in the broadest scientific and legal usage, the term “genocide.” A true cosmopolitan, Polish lawyer, with Jewish descent, born in territory of modern Belarus, who studied in Ukraine and Germany, before working in the universities in USA, he was writing about the genocide of Armenians, Assyrians (also known as Syriacs) and Jewish People.

It was his efforts which led the term to be entrenched in Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide adopted by Resolution 260 (III) A of the United Nations General Assembly on 9 December 1948. Also back in 1953, in his speech to the New York audience “The Soviet genocide in Ukraine”, Raphael Lemkin, was the first to recognize and speak about the crimes of the Stalinist Communist regime against the Ukrainian people, analyzing it in the context of international law.

In order to properly commemorate the name of Raphael Lemkin and to spread and continue the theoretical researches on the issues of genocides, Society Initiatives Institute is organizing this International Essay Contest.

Eligibility

The contest is open to all interested around the globe.

Awards

The winners will be selected by the Committee established by Society Initiatives Institute consisting of board members and scholars not more than two weeks after the deadline of essays submission.

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners chosen by the Committee will be awarded with 300, 200 and 100 euro respectively.

The best essays will be published on web-pages of organization and its partners.

Application

Each contestant can submit only one essay developed in English, Ukrainian, Russian or Polish. It must reflect the contestant’s own writing and original thinking. The Committee will disqualify any essay where plagiarism is suspected.

An essay should be maximum 1000 words long in the following format: essay title / author’s name and contacts / school/university/affiliation / essay (introduction, main arguments, conclusions).
