Description

The United Nations Alliance of Civilisations, the United Nations Development Programme and Build Up have launched PEACEapp, a global competition to promote digital games and gamified apps as venues for cultural dialogue and conflict management.

The competition is open to three kinds of entries at all stages of development – from prototypes to fully developed:

  1. digital games & gamified apps developed purposefully for this competition;
  2. already existing digital games;
  3. creative re-purposing of existing digital games to meet the aim of PEACEapp.

Eligibility

The competition is open for all developers, technologists and peace-builders around the world who are older than 13 years old.

Awards

PEACEapp’s international jury will select five winning entries: three that are fully functioning and two that are in development. The three fully functioning games or apps will receive an award of USD$5,000 each. The two in development will receive mentorship from expert partners. In addition, one member of each award-winning team (completed or in development) will be invited to the Build Peace conference in April 2015 in Cyprus to share their product with conference participants.

Application

To submit a digital game or gamified app, entrants must complete the entry form  in English and submit a video walkthrough or presentation of a working game / app, game / app alpha, beta prototype or implementation plan for using an existing game / app by 15 October 2014. Winners will be announced by November 30, 2014.

iAniMagic 2014, The Fourth Annual Contest of Animation Desk

The goal of iAniMagic contest is to explore the beauty of hand-drawn animations. We encourage both professional and amateur animators to submit inspiring hand-drawn 30-second animations using Animation Desk. A panel of professional judges is set to evaluate the quality of each entry’s technique, creativity and storyline before winners are announced on November 5th.

We have prepared great prizes such as a MacBook Air, Mac Mini 2.5G, $500 iTunes gift card, iPad Mini and other prizes for you to grab. The winners will also get a chance to be featured in Kdan’s social network and our professional animation platform, AniZone.

Description

The theme of the International Essay Contest is “Genocide – the dark mark of humanity”.

Essay may be written in the context of legal, political, historical, cultural, economic or any other issue connected to genocide.

We live in times of kaleidoscopic historical change when international law and settled after World War II world order once again find themselves threatened and become as the object of flagrant violations. The issue of responsibility of particular subjects of international relations and specific individuals for outright criminal actions that harm the civilized humanity is actual and raised once again.

In this regard, Ukraine based NGO “Society Initiatives Institute” seeks to eliminate embarrassing information void in the social, cultural and spiritual spheres, formed around the figure of the scientist, lawyer, expert on international law Raphael Lemkin, scholar who created and implemented in the broadest scientific and legal usage, the term “genocide.” A true cosmopolitan, Polish lawyer, with Jewish descent, born in territory of modern Belarus, who studied in Ukraine and Germany, before working in the universities in USA, he was writing about the genocide of Armenians, Assyrians (also known as Syriacs) and Jewish People.

It was his efforts which led the term to be entrenched in Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide adopted by Resolution 260 (III) A of the United Nations General Assembly on 9 December 1948. Also back in 1953, in his speech to the New York audience “The Soviet genocide in Ukraine”, Raphael Lemkin, was the first to recognize and speak about the crimes of the Stalinist Communist regime against the Ukrainian people, analyzing it in the context of international law.

In order to properly commemorate the name of Raphael Lemkin and to spread and continue the theoretical researches on the issues of genocides, Society Initiatives Institute is organizing this International Essay Contest.

Eligibility

The contest is open to all interested around the globe.

Awards

The winners will be selected by the Committee established by Society Initiatives Institute consisting of board members and scholars not more than two weeks after the deadline of essays submission.

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners chosen by the Committee will be awarded with 300, 200 and 100 euro respectively.

The best essays will be published on web-pages of organization and its partners.

Application

Each contestant can submit only one essay developed in English, Ukrainian, Russian or Polish. It must reflect the contestant’s own writing and original thinking. The Committee will disqualify any essay where plagiarism is suspected.

An essay should be maximum 1000 words long in the following format: essay title / author’s name and contacts / school/university/affiliation / essay (introduction, main arguments, conclusions).

Essays and all questions should be sent to essay@sii.org.ua.

The deadline for submission of an essay is 30th of November, 2014.

The Swiss government, through the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), awards the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships for Foreign Scholars and Artists for the Academic Year 2015-2016. The scheme includes various postgraduate scholarships to foreign scholars and researchers:

  • University scholarships (Swiss universities, Federal Institutes of Technology, as well as Universities of Applied Sciences)
  • Arts scholarships (schools of music and fine arts, only for a limited number of countries).

These scholarships provide graduates from all fields with the opportunity to pursue doctoral or postdoctoral research in Switzerland at one of the public funded university or recognized institution.

The No Hate Speech Movement – youth campaign for human rights online – is a project being run by the Council of Europe’s youth sector between 2012 and 2015.The campaign is led by young people between13 and 30 years of age and is addressed to everyone.The Forum of the No Hate Speech Movement will be held in Gabala, Azerbaijan.The Forum is hosted by the government of Azerbaijan in the framework of its Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe and is being organised in close cooperation with the National Assemble of Youth Organisations of Azerbaijan (NAYORA).The forum aims to bring together young people and other players active in the No Hate Speech Movement at national and European levels to share experiences, achievements and expectations, and to contribute to prepare the follow-up and consolidation of the Movement and its achievements at national and European level.

The Euro-Atlantic Council of Slovenia is a voluntary, non-profit and non-governmental interest and expert association. Their aim is to contribute to an active role played by the Republic of Slovenia in ensuring peace, security, and democratic stability in the Euro-Atlantic area through the EU and NATO. Balkan SAYS – Security Architecture Youth Seminar is a youth oriented security seminar, which goal is to connect youth from the region and beyond, discuss relevant security related topics, and search for fresh views and solutions to the most pressing regional issues. 

Eligibility

The Balkan SAYS – Security Architecture Youth Seminar is intended for students, young professionals, future leaders and active individuals who are:

  • 20 – 35 years of age;
  • interested in the security field and familiar with the seminar topics;
  • able to communicate and work in English language;
  • open to enrich their knowledge and awareness regarding the security and cooperation in the Balkans with a special emphasis to the issues of youth and display a commitment to promote positive changes;
  • committed to prepare themselves for the conference subjects, previous to their arrival in case of selection and able to participate during whole duration of the conference.

Costs

The Balkan SAYS 2014 – Security Architecture Youth Seminar will again take place on 24-27 October in LjubljanaSlovenia.

  • Seminar application fee for international participants: 50€

The application fee includes: 4 nights’ accommodation, meals, local transportation, tour of the city and conference materials.Euro-Atlantic Council of Slovenia might be able to partly reimburse the transportation costs of the selected international participants to and from the conference venue up to 150€. Requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is organizing the third edition of the Cyber Threats Workshop within the framework of its Journalism and Public Information Programmeon New Threats. The programme is tailored to journalists, chief information officers and those who want to specialize in public information and journalism. The focus of the upcoming workshop is on cyber crime, internet governance and the role of media.

The Cyber Threats Workshop will take place from the 9th to the 11th October 2014 at the United Nations Campus in Turin, Italy.

Key topics addressed include:

  • Evolution of the digital society and modern vulnerabilities
  • Understanding cyber warfare, cyber terrorism and cyber espionage
  • Online crimes against property and persons
  • UNICRI Hackers Profiling Project
