NAKASEC & Affiliates Encourage Eligible Youth to Apply for DACA 1 and Announce Launch of National AAPI DACA Collaborative Website on 4th Anniversary

WASHINGTON DC— The National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC) and its affiliates, the Korean American Resource and Cultural Center (KRCC) and Korean Resource Center (KRC), shared upcoming/recent DACA events and joined partners in announcing the launch of the AAPI DACA Collaborative website on August 15, 2016.  This day marked four years since President Obama implemented the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The Collaborative strongly encourages eligible young AAPIs to apply for DACA, which has been providing over 728,000 young undocumented immigrants with temporary relief from deportation and a work permit.  Out of the total number of DACA recipients, over 17,000 people immigrated from the top four Asian countries of origin (South Korea, Philippines, India, and Pakistan). There are roughly 1.5 million undocumented Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs), many of whom are eligible for DACA. South Korea has the 7th highest acceptance rate for DACA and an estimated 9,000 of the 44,000 DACA-eligible Korean Americans have applied as of March 2016.

The existing 2012 DACA has not been affected by the Supreme Court’s 4-4 “non-decision” ruling in United States v. Texas on June 23, 2016. The Supreme Court decision does, however, mean that the court injunction prohibiting implementation of DAPA (Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents) and expanded DACA remains in effect.

In 2015 alone, the AAPI DACA Collaborative members held over 400 legal service and over 500 outreach events. Collectively the collaborative received over 1,800 phone calls inquiring about DACA and over half of the callers were potentially DACA eligible. NAKASEC will host a naturalization clinic and DACA Information Session with New American Civic Engagement Alliance (NACEA) on September 25th from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Washington Spencerville Korean Church (1700 Spencerville Rd, Spencerville, MD 20868). Community members interested in naturalization or DACA 1 application assistance should call NAKASEC’s office (703-256-2208) to schedule an appointment. In California, community members interested in naturalization or the 2012 DACA application assistance should call KRC’s office (323-680-5725) to schedule an appointment from Monday through Thursday. KRC also provides financial aid consultation for undocumented college students. For more information, please call 323-680-5725.

In Illinois, KRCC has been fundraising for DACA scholarships. In partnership with KRCC, the Korean American Association of Chicago (KAAC) has been fundraising DACA Scholarship for a year and provided full application fees ($465) for 20 Korean American DACA applicants who have recommended by and processed their applications by KRCC and Korean American Community Services (KACS). KAAC also made a video for fundraising for DACA Scholarship and will have a Korean American golf outing event for DACA Scholarship fundraising on Wednesday, August 24 in Chicago, Illinois. Additionally, KRCC’s youth group, Fighting Youth Shouting out for Humanity (FYSH), organized its annual youth-led Coffeehouse on July 23 and raised over $1500, exceeding their fundraising goal. The funds go towards FYSH’s DREAM Scholarship, a scholarship to help undocumented youth pay for DACA application fees.

Ju Hong, National AAPI DACA Collaborative Coordinator, shared: “DACA had opened doors for me to affordable education and to travel back to South Korea to reunite with my ailing grandmother for the first time in over 13 years. I strongly encourage all eligible undocumented AAPI young people to apply for DACA and experience these benefits that others take for granted.”

NAKASEC’s Executive Director Dae Joong Yoon, KRCC’s Executive Director Inhe Choi, and KRC’s Los Angeles Director Joon Bang said: “NAKASEC, KRCC, and KRC encourage all eligible community members to make DACA 1 stronger by applying now. DACA is a program that has opened up doors to education, better paying jobs, and opportunities that others take for granted. The 2012 program is open and ready for new and renewing applicants. The announcement of DACA is a victory our community rightfully won and DACAmented leaders have spoken out about how DACA has positively impacted their lives and their future. Let’s continue to lift up the voices of the hardworking DACA recipients who are represented in all 50 states. We remain committed to engaging in DACA outreach, services, and events and working with the AAPI DACA Collaborative partners across the country to increase both initial and renewal applications rates among the AAPI community. ”

Apply for Chevening Scholarships Programme 2017/2018

Chevening is the UK government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders and is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organizations. Chevening offers a unique opportunity for future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship you have to meet following criteria:

  • Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country;
  • Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your scholarship has ended;
  • Have an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry to a post-graduate programme at a UK university. This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class 2:1 honours degree in the UK;
  • Have at least two years’ work experience;
  • Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an unconditional offer from one of these choices by 13 July 2017;
  • Meet the Chevening English language requirement by 13 July 2017.

Scholarship

Chevening covers a number of costs including flights, accommodation and others according to your country.

Berlin Seminar on Truth, Justice and Remembrance

Description

The Robert Bosch Stiftung is pleased to announce its international Seminar on Truth, Justice and Remembrance. The seminar will take place in Berlin, Germany. The program facilitates cross-regional learning about dealing with the past in different societal contexts. Participants are equipped with the knowledge, tools and leadership skills necessary to facilitate and bring about meaningful progress on truth, justice, and remembrance in their societies during and after conflict.
This unique two-week seminar brings together 25 actors from (post-) conflict societies from all over the world, all of whom work on remembrance, the politics of memory, and documentation and truth-finding during and in the aftermath of conflicts.
The Berlin Seminar provides participants with the opportunity
  • to learn more about Dealing with the Past in Germany with a focus on the Nazi regime and the communist regime in the GDR as well as the ensuing public discourses;
  • to exchange best practices with participants from other post-conflict societies;
  • to work intensely on the challenges they face in their own work, organizations and societies through professional facilitation as well as through peer consultation;
  • to strengthen their leadership skills and to develop strategies for self-management and self-care.
The program includes visits to different sites of memory and meetings with representatives from politics, civil society and media, witnesses and experts as well as advanced application workshops with selected German institutions and individuals. The program will furthermore include sessions on leadership development and systemic analysis, and offers space to discuss and reflect on the learnings in an international group from different (post-)conflict societies.

Eligibility

To be considered for the program, candidates will have to meet the following criteria:
  • The program is targeted at mid-career and senior staff working for civil society organizations, government bodies and media institutions with relevant work experience in the field of dealing with the past. Practitioners, activists and experts from (post-) conflict societies directly involved in peace processes are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Have very good English skills in order to participate in group discussions and to write a short reflection paper.
  • Be open to a comparative and participatory learning experience: Participants are expected to actively engage with participants from other countries, to consult to each other on challenges they face in their home contexts, and to share reflections and lessons learned within the group.
Prior knowledge about Germany is not required.

Costs

Robert Bosch Stiftung will cover travel to and from Germany, accommodation and other related costs for local travel, lunches and drinks.

The 2nd Squeeze it Contenst 2016

The L’Officina and the Studio Tommaseo of Trieste, together with the Trieste Contemporanea Committee, announce the Squeeze It Contest 2016 / Franco Jesurun Award and Online Squeeze It Award / Second Edition.

The contest is international and addressed to the European area. It is specifically directed at the new generations in order to encourage future professionals to create original projects, which are characterized by the dynamic interaction between the contemporary creativity of theatre, the languages of the visual arts and of the new media.

Travel and accommodation expenses, pertaining to the final evening and to the participation in the workshop, of the finalists and of the winner of the online award (1 individual/group leader + 1 eventual added collaborator) will be paid by the organization. Travel and accommodation expenses will also be provided to people involved in the shooting of the final video.

Eligibility

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • The competition is open to young contestants under the age of 30, born in EU member countries, in CEI member states, in Kosovo and in Turkey;
  • Any group competing should indicate a project leader. All participants must be born after 10 September 1986 and in the countries listed above.

Prize

  • The winner of the Franco Jesurun Award 2016 will be given the opportunity to collaborate with an internationally renowned video artist with whom he will realize a professional video work of the winning theatrical action;
  • Finalists: Finalists will actually perform their theatrical action in the final evening of the competition, to be staged in November 2016 in Trieste. They will be invited as well to participate in a formative and indepth workshop on issues relating to the three creative sectors that are object of the contest;
  • Semi-Finalists: The semi-finalist video clips will be published on the website. The one of them, ranked first in an on-line public vote, will be awarded the Online Squeeze It Award 2016. The winner will be invited to participate in the workshop of the finalists.

The International Youth Camp 2016 in Baku, Azerbaijan

In the time of conflicts that appear, wars that are going on, the value of intercultural dialogue and non-formal learning and communication between countries, nations, various cultures and religions gets its significance. In the recent years many projects aimed to rising cross-cultural ties between countries were implemented. As one of the Great Silk Way International Youth Union’s objectives is to organize various international training courses and seminars, round-table meetings, exhibitions, conferences, charity marathons, forums and other events aimed at multi-cultural learning, the Union considers that it is important to implement this project in the country where living together among people with different cultures and religions is not a form of behavior, but a way of living.

The “International Youth Camp” is a platform designed to bring together youth from different parts of the world in order to discuss and share their ideas and concerns about issues related to intercultural dialog and multiculturalism. Participants are expected to be encouraged to discuss and thus increase the awareness of the issue. It also aims at exploring ways in which these active and emerging youth can act together as advocates for multiculturalism and tolerance at the local, regional and global level. That is why they will be trained on project management in order to improve their own projects. The Camp provides local and international youth the opportunity to learn intercultural experience, integrated understanding on tolerance, multiculturalism and living together in peace, through a valuable and meaningful 5 days program in a beautiful countryside.

Objectives:

  1. To initiate an intercultural dialogue between youth workers;
  2. To create sustainable motivation and encourage youth for promotion of values and development of actions in the sphere of multicultural dialogue on their local level;
  3. To create common understanding of intercultural dialogue among participants and to develop participants skills in this field;
  4. To encourage future network among participants and support potential peer-leaders and multipliers for Intercultural Dialogue working on local level after the participants are back to their countries of residence;
  5. To explore existing concepts, practices and approaches in intercultural dialogue, non-formal education, project management;
  6. To ascertain the obligations of community to respect, protect and fulfill the right to equal education among the people representing different cultures, nations and religious.

 

Eligibility

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • be aged 18 and 30;
  • be able to work in English;
  • be youth workers involved in youth or community projects in their countries and be willing to realize youth initiatives for intercultural dialogue following the residential meeting;
  • possess a sense of responsibility for one’s own actions and a commitment to personal and community development;
  • be curious, open-minded, appreciate diversity and learn about each other’s realities;
  • be interested in creation of network that will collaborate after the project is over;
  • demonstrate willingness to work;
  • participate at the full duration of the project;

Costs

The Camp is entirely free. Costs for living arrangements, food, internal transportation and activities are fully provided, however, international participants have just to pay the travel expenses.

The organizing team will select the best applications and inform those who will pass selection process.

The project will use a variety of methods to achieve its aims. The program will include grоuр discussiоns, tеаmbuilding ехеrcises, energizers, simulatiоn gаmes and role-plays, individual and group reflection sessions, individual and group presentations, guest sреаkers, thеоretical input and field trips. The program will be guided by the trainers with international experience in youth events in related topic and facilitated by the staff of the Great Silk Way IYU. The participants that will participate in full duration of the camp will be awarded with certificates.

White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Internship Program

The White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Washington, D.C. offers full-time internships during the spring, summer, and fall. The Initiative is responsible for the implementation of the President’s Executive Order 13515. Its purpose is to develop, monitor, and coordinate executive branch efforts to improve the quality of life of AAPIs through increased participation in federal programs.

Applicants for intern positions must be undergraduates or graduate students who are enrolled at least half-time. Ideally, the candidate will already be familiar with AAPI issues and have outstanding research, writing, communications, and computer skills. The application deadline is July 29, 2016.

2017 APHA Public Health Fellowship in Government application now open

On behalf of the American Public Health Association, I am thrilled to announce the call for applications for the 2017 APHA Public Health Fellowship in Government. This is the ninth year APHA is offering this fellowship, which has been described as an “amazing,” “phenomenal” and “life altering” experience by previous fellows.

Candidates must have strong public health credentials and be able to spend one year in Washington, D.C. The fellow will have the option of working in the House or Senate on legislative and policy issues such as creating healthy communities, improving health equity, addressing environmental health concerns, population health or the social determinants of health.

Training for the fellowship will begin in January 2017 so you must be able to move to the Washington, D.C., area in January. The fellowship provides a unique learning experience and demonstrates the value and need for basing policy on sound science. Throughout the year, the fellow will gain a practical knowledge of government and how the public policy process works.

All candidates must:

  1. be an APHA member.
  2. have a graduate degree in public health or a related discipline.
  3. have at least five years’ experience as a public health professional beyond graduate or medical training.
  4. be a citizen of the U.S. or its territories or have permanent residence status in the U.S.

Virtual Student Foreign Service Internship Program in USA, Apply Now Through July 22

The U.S. Department of State’s Virtual Student Foreign Service (VSFS) eInternship program is bigger and better than ever! This year, we have over 900 vacancies at 30 U.S. Government agencies. The 309 projects available this year can be found here. Students can apply between July 2 – 22 on USAJobs to their top three projects.

VSFS is a way for the American public and government employees to collaborate on projects of global importance. Selected applicants will contribute up to 10 hours per week from September 2016 through May 2017 working on projects from a U.S. Mission abroad or a domestic government office. As eInterns, students will play an important role in advancing the federal government’s reach in diplomacy, development, space, journalism, trade, environment, health, agriculture, technology, housing and other essential initiatives. Together, we can create a more effective, efficient, and smarter government that takes advantage of an engaged and participatory citizenry.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens enrolled in university level courses in the U.S. or abroad. Last year, we had students in programs ranging from undergraduate to PhD levels, both full and part-time, taking courses in person or online. A resume, transcript, and statement of interest are required as part of the application process.
