Win a Filmmaking Trip to New Orleans

Deadline: 6 November 2013
Open to: any non-professionals, minimum age of 18
Prize: travel scholarship for a trip to New Orleans, enrolment in Travel Filmmaking Course

Description

This year, the 2013 Travel Film Scholarship is off to New Orleans to experience one of the most unique and rich cultures in the U.S.  This assignment is about really finding out what makes this melting pot of a city tick – from exploring Mardi Gras traditions to delving into the vibrant music and food scenes that the Big Easy can claim as their very own.

You’ll spend 10 days in New Orleans under the mentorship of filmmaker and director Brian Rapsey. In that time you will be producing 3-5 three-minute travel-themed videos that will be shared with the world!

Solo Application

You must have solid film making skills, but more importantly, you must shine in front of the camera. People need to be inspired to travel, and to travel with you. The winner will essentially be a one-man show, needing nothing more than a camera and a sense of adventure to unearth a great story.

Team Application

Some of you are excellent filmmakers, with zero desire to see your face on film.  And there are others of you out there that are talented in front of the lens, but are hopeless behind it. So, if you decide to apply as a pair, you can be a combination of one filmmaker and one presenter or two people who can use a camera and stand in front of it.

Eligibility

  • Any non-professionals can apply – this is open to film students, or anyone who’s trying to build a career in film making and/or presenting!
  • Minimum age 18 (by application deadline) with a current, valid passport and you must be available to be in New Orleans from February 26-March 8, 2014 (dates may vary by a few days) to participate in the project
  • You may be a resident of any country (subject to obtaining a U.S. visa).
  • You should be a mad-keen auteur with a lust for adventure and burning desire to be a filmmaker and/or presenter.
  • You must be fit and healthy as moderate levels of physical work are involved as well as a number of late nights!

Prize

The Winner will receive:

  • An 10-day bespoke trip to New Orleans
  • Round-trip airfare from your country of residence to New Orleans where you will meet your mentor
  • Enrollment in the MatadorU Travel Filmmaking course (with 3 months unlimited access to the course)
  • Rode Microphones gear: A Video Mic Pro with an XLR adaptor, Smart Lav, Lavalier Mic, plus accessories!
  • UltraPod GO – a light, compact, versatile tripod from Pedco (one per entrant, up to 2 per team)
  • Travel insurance for the duration of the trip from World Nomads.

The 4 Runner’s Up will receive:

  • Enrollment in the MatadorU Travel Filmmaking course (with 3 months unlimited access to the course)
  • UltraPod GO – a light, compact, versatile tripod from Pedco (one per entrant, up to 2 per team)

The top 50 entries will also receive enrollment in the MatadorU Travel Filmmaking mini-course.

Application

Applications are accepted till 6 November 2013, 2pm (Australian Eastern Daylight Time UTC +11). To apply you need to:

1. Compile a maximum 3-minute travel video in English based around one of the following themes:

  • Learn New Skills
  • Your Backyard
  • Local Legend
  • Festival
  • Roadtrip
  • Seek Experiences

Want a bit of advice before you run off and create your film? Check out Brian’s tips HERE.

2. Go to YouTube or Vimeo to upload your video.

3. Create a journal and fill in the entry form HERE, then follow the simple instructions to upload your video into the post. In under 1200 characters tell about your video;

  • What inspired your subject matter?
  • What has been your filmmaking experience to date?
  • What is your ambition as a filmmaker/presenter and what would winning this scholarship mean to you?

Thiel Fellowship Program Invites Applications From Young Entrepreneurs – “20 under 20”

Thiel Fellowship Program Invites Applications From Young Entrepreneurs

Silicon Valley entrepreneur Peter Thiel has announced that his Thiel Foundation is accepting applications for a new class of “20 Under 20” Thiel Fellows.

Thiel Fellowships provide two-year grants of $100,000 to twenty people under 20 years of age so that they can leave the classroom and pursue innovation.

Since the Thiel Fellowship began in 2011, more than sixty young people have been awarded fellowships for project ideas in fields ranging from nuclear and alternative energy, to robotics and biotechnology, to finance, 3-D printing, gaming, and software.

During the two-year fellowship, the Thiel Foundation and its network of mentors provide guidance and support to help fellows build their scientific, technical, and entrepreneurial ideas. While fellows are expected to work on their innovative ideas full-time, they determine their own specific paths; this might mean starting a company but could also mean doing freelance work, developing a social movement, interning at another company, or pursuing research and development independently.

Although applicants may already have an idea for a scientific, technical, or nonprofit innovation, Thiel Fellowships are not limited to those with established companies or developed innovations. Teams of up to four may also apply.

To be eligible, candidates must be 19 years old or younger as of December 31. Candidates from around the world are encouraged to apply.

Fellows are encouraged to move to the San Francisco Bay Area for the opportunities and resources that the area provides. However, fellows are welcome to work on their projects from any location. Fellows are asked to take two years off from college so that they can fully focus on their projects without the time and expense of college.

Complete program guidelines, application procedures, and information on previous fellows’ projects are available at the Thiel Fellowship Web site.

Training for young film critics

International Film Festival Rotterdam welcomes applications for the 16th Trainee Project for Young Film Critics taking place during its 43rd festival edition (January 22 – February 2, 2014).

International Film Festival Rotterdam supports film making, film producing and journalistic talent on several levels: the main festival section Bright Future (including competitions for both features and shorts) presents recent works by first and second time filmmakers; Rotterdam’s Hubert Bals Fund contributes to film projects in developing countries and co-production market CineMart organizes a trainee project for young film producers (Rotterdam Lab) in close collaboration with its partner organizations. Recognizing the important role of film criticism to the perception of independent cinema, IFFR organizes a trainee project for young film critics.

Project description
The IFFR Trainee Project for Young Film Critics is a talent development program that offers up to three young (under 30 years), motivated and talented professional film critics from outside the Netherlands a chance to travel abroad to cover a major international film festival, to get acquainted with the Rotterdam film festival in particular and the broad range of independent cinema it offers.

The project was created in 1998 to open up opportunities for young and upcoming film critics to explore and sharpen their knowledge and views on independent and experimental cinema – and the festivals, like International Film Festival Rotterdam, that present it.

Trainee program
The program of the Trainee Project includes contributing to the festival’s newspaper Daily Tiger by exploring an assigned part of the festival; publishing a blog on IFFR’s website; taking part in expert meetings with experienced film critics and reporting about the festival for own affiliation(s).

The trainees will form a team, hosted by the IFFR Press Office and the Daily Tiger editorial staff. You get to explore all aspects of IFFR (screenings, exhibitions, Q&A sessions, and debates) as part of the program and to cover for your own media

– If your participation is successful and you have published reports that meet IFFR standards (in both quality and quantity) you get the opportunity to visit the next edition of the festival as an accredited journalist

Criteria for application
– Age under 30 years

– Fluent command of the English language (written and spoken)

– Demonstrable experience in film criticism (print or online media)

– Not yet established enough to profit from facilities as attending international film festivals outside your country
