Are you a peacebuilder? Would international recognition and a $10,000 prize help your organisation make a bigger impact? Apply today for the annual Tomorrow’s Peacebuilders awards.

Tomorrow’s Peacebuilders are the global awards for local peacebuilding run by Peace Direct. Awarded annually, they offer international recognition for grassroots peace activists in conflict-affected countries worldwide.

Since Peace Direct was set up a decade ago, it’s been our mission to support and showcase the variety and scale of peacebuilding led by local people around the world. We support 11 organisations in nine countries and have profiled over 1,300 organisations through our flagship website, Insight on Conflict.

Now, we are launching our fourth Tomorrow’s Peacebuilders awards to showcase the best locally led peacebuilding organisations across the world. This year’s awards are being run in association with Alliance for Peacebuilding. Entrants will need to show how they are making communities more peaceful, or breaking the cycle of violence. A jury of international peacebuilding experts will select the winning entries.

There will be three winning entries. Each winning entry will receive:

·         $10,000 prize funding for peacebuilding activities.

·         Promotion of their work online, including on the Insight on Conflict and Peace Direct websites and newsletters

ELIGIBILITY

There is no geographical restriction on applications. In order to be eligible to enter, you must:

·         Be undertaking peacebuilding work: your organisation will be either a peacebuilding organisation or have peacebuilding as a substantial element of your work.

·         Be locally based: your organisation must be based in the country/communities where your work will be done. Your organisation should be an independent organisation, not an incountry or satellite organisation of an international NGO.

·         Be working, or planning to work, in at least one of the following thematic areas: women-led peacebuilding; environmental peacebuilding; or interreligious peacebuilding.

International Day of Peace Video Campaign

The Global Peace Foundation commemorates the International Day of Peace each year.

Screen Shot 2016-09-06 at 7.55.45 PMThis year we are hosting a video campaign as a global pledge for peace. Videos submissions have a chance to be showcased at the International Day of Peace event at the United Nations in New York and the Amazing the Space event in Northern Ireland.

This year Global Peace Foundation has partnered to host two signature events supporting the International Day of Pece.

 In Northern Ireland, GPF is a partner in “Amazing the Space,” a event gathering 3,500 youth to celebrate their  role in peacemaking.

 

 In the United States, GFP is a partner in Tomorrow Together, a broad-based coalition of  organizations encouraging Americans to commemorate “September 11 Day of Remembrance and Service” in a show of national unity through good deeds and service. Global Peace Foundation is promoting an 11-day service campaign starting on 9/11 to 9/21 the International Day of Peace.

 

Video Campaign Details: 

  • This video campaign is open to all young people under the age of 25.
  •  Video messages should be approximately 1 minute in length.
  •  The language required is English for screening in Ireland and the UN.

Harvard Model Congress Asia 2017, Hong Kong, China

Description

Harvard Model Congress Asia is a global conference where international high school students learn and experience government while playing the roles of officials in the United States government and several international political bodies. HMC Asia strives to educate and foster the next generation of global leaders by offering a truly interactive program, featuring one-on-one communication with Harvard students, debate on pressing global issues, and cross-cultural connections among delegates from throughout Asia and around the world.

Students from more than twenty nations converge at the conference and work together to address challenges facing governments across the world. At HMCA students discuss contemporary political issues, draft policy, report news stories, and decide court cases, all under the guidance of Harvard University students. HMC Asia is an officially recognized and wholly student-run organization at Harvard College. HMCA teaches students about government and international relations by providing insights into pressing global issues and by offering a forum to discuss possible solutions. HMCA’s staff of talented Harvard undergraduate students, selected after a competitive application process, strives to encourage a passion for government and international relations by simulating international organizations and the United States government.

Costs

  • Delegate Fee: USD 295/person;
  • For HMCA 2017, both full scholarships (covers delegate fee, lodging, and transportation costs) and partial scholarships (covers delegate fee) will be awarded to support delegates for whom financial need would be a barrier to attendance;
  • Harvard Model Congress relies on student participant fees to cover all of our costs, which range from staff transportation to printed materials. The delegate fee includes all aspects of the conference (with the exception of hotel accommodations and meals), as well as an HMC Asia 2017 T-shirt. This fee must be paid for each delegate who is attending the conference. Delegate fees must be paid within 2 weeks of registering for the conference. Roles will not be assigned until the delegate fee is paid.

UNIDO’s 50th Anniversary Global Start-up Business Plan Contest

Description

The Global Start-up Business Plan Competition (GSBPC) aims to stimulate and unleash the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation among aspiring and existing entrepreneurs with ideas that contribute to their personal economic benefit and towards developing their communities.

The main points to focus on are:

  • The business idea – uniqueness, viability, relevance;
  • The product and services – description, impact, market need;
  • Competitor analysis – description, opportunities;
  • Target market – definition;
  • Marketing plan – nature, relevance, objectives;
  • Start-up costs and financials.

The three participants or teams with the best business plans will be invited to attend the prize-winners’ event in Vienna on 21 to 25 November 2016, during the celebration of UNIDO’s 50th Anniversary.

Eligibility

  • Participants must be aged between 18 and 35;
  • Entrepreneurs with a new business idea;
  • An existing entrepreneur(s) with a startup in its early stages;
  • Participants must use the Business Plan Template;
  • Individuals or teams of maximum 3 members;
  • Applications must be completed in English.

Award

The winner  will receive the following start-up capital: 

  • 1st Place: 15,000 USD;
  • 2nd Place: 10,000 USD;
  • 3rd Place: 5,000 USD.

All three winners will additionally be rewarded with:

  • A UNIDO certificate;
  • Increased visibility for their start-up;
  • A round-trip from home country to the UNIDO Headquarters in Vienna, Austria;
  • Accommodation and health insurance in Vienna (from the 21 to 25 November 2016).

Akademie Schloss Solitude Residency Program for 2017–2019

Description

Akademie Schloss Solitude is granting Approx. 70 Residental Fellowships of 3-12 months in duration. More than 1.300 artists from more than 120 countries have developed and advanced projects at the Akademie since its opening in 1990, creating a close-knit, global network of Solitude alumni that expands from year to year.

International artists are invited to apply from the following disciplines: Architecture (design, landscape architecture, urban planning), Visual Arts (including performance art), Performing Arts (stage design, dramatic texts, dramaturgy, musical theater, performance, direction, drama, dance), Design (fashion, costume, product and furniture design, visual communication), Literature (essay, criticism, poetry, prose, translation), Music/Sound (interpretation, sound installation, sound performance, composition), Time-based Media (including video, video installation, documentary and fiction film) and Web-based Media (web design, web development/coding, web art and digital journalism). Furthermore, scholars, scientists and professionals from the disciplines of the Humanities, Social Sciences(Culture and Geopolitics), Economy/Economics (Urban Policy) and History (its practices of writing and politics in the contemporary).

The responsible specialist jurors make decisions on the allocation and the duration of the fellowships. Fellowships are granted for three to twelve months. One of the following three languages is assumed: German, English or French.

Eligibility

  • Persons up to 35 or if older who have completed a university or college degree within the past five years;
  • Several fellowships are also awarded regardless of the applicant’s age.

Fellowship

The fellowship includes the following:

  • A combined apartment / studio, furnished with electricity, water and heat free of charge;
  • A stipend amounting to EUR 1,150 monthly (plus one-time expenses incurred by the fellowship holder travelling to and from Stuttgart from his or her primary place of residence). The Akademie may also offer additional financial supplements, depending on its respective budget situation;
  • A supplement for so-called double housekeeping (subsidy for apartment or studio costs); freight cost subsidy for the transport of materials, tools and instruments to and from Stuttgart; a project promotion subsidy and a one-time materials subsidy; in the case of non-German guests (from non EU-countries), assumption of part of their health insurance expenses;
  • The use of the workshops owned by Akademie Schloss Solitude under the supervision of the technical director, are free of charge for fellowship holders.

Application

The next application round/call for applications for fellowships from 2017–2019 will take place from 1 September 2016 to 30 November 2016. Within this time frame only, applicants will be able to register on the application website and download the application form.

Communications Intern – Programmes Unit Asia at Berlin Office

Communications Intern (October-December 2016)

Democracy Reporting International (DRI) is a non-partisan, independent, not-for-profit organisation registered in Berlin. Democracy Reporting International promotes the political participation of citizens, the accountability of state bodies and the development of democratic institutions world-wide. Democracy Reporting International is currently recruiting a communications intern for its Berlin headquarters to support DRI’s work in Asia (Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka). The intern will support the Asia Team in the areas of communications and project management/administration.

Tasks include:

Communications:

  • Contribute to writing and editing website stories and newsletter articles;
  • Support in drafting and scheduling content for social media channels;
  • Conduct image selection for the website and social media channels;
  • Assist in drafting and editing reports and briefing papers and translating documents;

Project management/administration:

  • Support in the recruitment and management of international experts including travel logistic
  • Support the organisation and its implementation of expert missions as well as workshops and DRI events in Berlin or in-country;
  • Assist in maintaining project files, databases and other resources;
  • Conduct research on current and political affairs in programme countries and the wider Asia region with a particular focus on elections, constitutions and human rights;

Qualifications required:

  • Academic background in law, political science, (South) Asian studies, journalism, public relations or related fields;

Heinrich Böll Foundation Scholarships 2016

Description

The Heinrich Böll Foundation grants scholarships to approximately 1,000 undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students of all subjects and nationalities per year, who are pursuing their degree at universities, universities of applied sciences (‘Fachhochschulen’), or universities of the arts (‘Kunsthochschulen’). Scholarship recipients are expected to have excellent academic records, to be socially and politically engaged and to have an active interest in the basic values of the foundation: Ecology and sustainability, democracy and human rights, self determination and justice.

At the time of application, the applicant must have been accepted as a student or doctoral student by a state-recognised institution of higher education in Germany. The applicant has to be accepted by a state-recognised institution at the latest by the beginning of the scholarship.

Eligibility

 

For an undergraduate and graduate scholarship:

  1. General student scholarships for German and German-educated applicants: Students in all subjects who are pursuing a first degree (Bachelor, Staatsexamen, Diplom) and who earned their university entrance qualification in Germany;
  2. Student scholarship – journalism: “Medienvielfalt, anders: Junge Migrantinnen und Migranten in den Journalismus” (for Germans and candidates who study in Germany – Bildungsinländer/innen): This programme is aimed at German or German-educated students with a migration background who wish to become journalists;
  3. International students on a masters course in any subject who earned their university entrance qualification outside Germany (Bildungsausländer/innen) and are studying, or wish to study, in Germany.
For a doctoral scholarship:
  1.  Doctoral students from inside and outside Germany for a doctoral scholarship in the focus programme “Transformation Research”;

Good or very good knowledge of German is required, please supply documentary evidence.

Scholarship

For undergraduate and graduate students:

  • Who are German/EU nationals or those educated in Germany, the amount varies according to parental income or own assets or earnings: max. EUR 597 plus EUR 300 book allowance per month.

At the doctoral level:

  • German/EU nationals or those educated in Germany receive EUR 1,050 per month basic scholarship plus EUR 100 per month research costs allowance.

Description

The Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program is an international exchange program that offers practitioners, scholars, and journalists from around the world the opportunity to spend five months at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), in Washington DC, in order to undertake independent research on democratic challenges worldwide. While in residence, fellows reflect on their experiences; conduct research and writing, consider best practices and lessons learned and develop professional relationships within a global network of democracy advocates. The program offers two tracks, a practitioner track and a scholarly track:

  • Practitioner track- created to support democratic activists, human rights advocates, journalists, and others who work on the front lines of democracy promotion in emerging and aspiring democracies. It seeks to provide experienced activists with an opportunity to reflect on their work, learn from counterparts in the United States, and reevaluate techniques for building democracy in their country of origin;
  • Scholarly track- recognizing the importance of intellectual contributions to the theory and practice of democracy, the program offers a scholarly track principally for professors and researchers from emerging and aspiring democracies. During their stay at the forum, scholars make at least one formal presentation and complete a substantial piece of writing (a monograph or book) for publication.

2017–2018 Fellowship Sessions:

  • Fall Session: October–February;
  • Spring Session: March–July.

Eligibility

Eligibility requirements for all applicants:

  • Citizens of any country may apply;
  • Proficiency in the English language;
  • Topics focusing on the political, social, economic, legal, or cultural aspects of democratic development;
  • Availability to be in residence at the International Forum for Democratic Studies in Washington, D.C., during the year for which candidates are applying for a fellowship.

Applicants eligible for applying in one of the two tracks:

 

Practitioner track

  • Mid-career professionals with several years of professional experience in the field of democracy and human rights;
  • No specific degree requirements (a PhD is not required);
  • No age limits.

Scholarly track

  • College and university professors, researchers, journalists, and other writers from developing and aspiring democracies;
  • Expected to possess a doctorate (a PhD, or academic equivalent) at the time of application;
  • To have a proven record of publications in their field;
  • Have developed a detailed research outline for their fellowship project;
  • Distinguished scholars from the United States or other established democracies are also eligible to apply.

Fellowship

Fellows will receive a monthly stipend for living expenses, basic health insurance, a round trip travel to and from Washington, D.C., a fully equipped office, including internet access and a NED email account, plus a limited budget for long-distance phone calls and professional travel within the United States. The program does not provide financial assistance for accompanying family or other dependents.

The application process is conducted online for which the applicants are required to register. Applicants will be required to submit:
