Description

The 9th edition of the International Summer School in Migration, Human Rights and Democracy, organized by the University of Palermo, focuses the issues of “separated children” and migrant children. We are inviting advanced Master and PhD students, academics, free scholars as well as civil society activists to present and discuss applied research, empirical studies and theoretical papers (in Italian and/or English), from a sociological, anthropological, psychological perspective, on one of the topics including, but not limited to:

  • The role of cultural mediators dealing with irregular migrant children (unaccompanied children, asylum seeking children, children with families/children accompanied).
  • Reception practices in the psychological, social and educational scope.
  • Social and labour market inclusion projects.
  • Separated children taking charge modalities and  psychophysical well-being.
  • Separated children and criminal activity/deviance.
  • Separated children in Italy, second-generation migrants and citizenship.
  • Separated children victims of trafficking and human smuggling, exploitation (forced labor/begging, sexual abuse).
  • Mobilities.
  • Forms and practices of ethnic identity in host society.

Your participation will be rewarded with a certificate. The Summer School is a 6 ECTS programme.

Submission Guidelines

Abstract for papers should be no more than 500 words, and it should be sent (in doc/pdf format) by 30 April 2015 to the scientific coordinator (elisabetta.digiovanni@unipa.it). Selected authors will be notified until 5 May 2015 and have to send the receipt until 15 May 2015.

The full paper (between 6000-7000 words with the ‘Chicago B’ style citation) are expected to be received by 15 June 2015.

  • Selected papers will be published in a collected volume with Aracne publisher (Rome, Italy) and on Migration Studiesreview.

Fully Funded Türkiye Scholarships for International Students 2015

Description

Applications for Türkiye Scholarships will start by February 25th. Applications for undergraduate, master and PhD programmes will received through the same application cycle.

The application to Türkiye Scholarships programmes is online and totally free process.

Candidates can apply only one scholarship programme in accordance with their educational background and academic goals.

Türkiye Scholarships include both scholarship and university placement at the same time. Applicants will be placed in a university and programme among their preferences specified in the online application form.

Most programmes in Turkish universities are instructed in Turkish. However, some departments and universities offer programmes in English or French. The candidates who want to study in these languages need to have an internationally recognized certificate to prove their language proficiency. Also, most of these foreign language programmes may ask international admission test scores such as GRE, GMAT etc. Candidates can check the language of instruction while selecting the programmes.

All Türkiye Scholarships winners who do not have C1 Level Certificate for Turkish Proficiency (including those who are placed into English or French-taught programmes) must attend 1-year Turkish Preparatory Course.

Art and Sport Scholarship Programmes, available for the first time this year, is specifically designed to encourage the skilled international students in the fields of art and sport to study at undergraduate, master or PhD (proficieny in art) degree levels in the prestigious Turkish universities with opportunities of Türkiye Scholarships. Applicants selected to be funded take one-year Turkish Language Course covered by scholarship. Subsequently, they have to receive an acceptance from the relevant faculties of Turkish universities. Applicants are expected to have documents (offical certificate, portfolio, etc.) to prove their success in the field they apply for.

To be eligible for Undergraduate Programmes, applicants must;

  • be a citizen of a country other than Turkey (Anyone holding or ever held Turkish citizenship before cannot apply),
  • not be a registered student in Turkish universities at the level of study they are applying,
  • be have graduated or are likely to graduate from a secondary education institution,
  • be under the age of 21 (no earlier than 01.01.1994),
  • have at least specified (% 90 for medical sciences, % 70 for other undergraduate programs) cumulative grade point average, diploma grade, national exam or international exam score,
  • be in good health

To be eligible for Postgraduate Programmes, applicants must;

  • be a citizen of a country other than Turkey (Anyone holding or ever held Turkish citizenship before cannot apply)
  • not be a registered student in Turkish universities at the level of study they are applying.
  • be a bachelor’s or master’s degree holder by 30th of July 2015 at the latest
  • be under the age of 30 for master’s programmes (no earlier than 01.01.1985)
  • be under the age of 35 for doctorate programmes (no earlier than 01.01.1980)
  • have at least 75 % cumulative grade point average or diploma grade over their maximum graduation grade or have at least 75 % success in any accepted national or international graduate admissions test.
  • be in good health

Global Minority Rights Summer School 2015

Description

The Tom Lantos Institute (TLI) and the National University of Public Service (NUPS) in cooperation with the Middlesex University London (MU) and with the support of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade are organising their third international Summer School on Minority Rights with a special focus on the impact of boundary politics on identity and inequality. It will take place from 19 to 25 July 2015 in Budapest, Hungary.

The Summer School aims to:

  • Understand and critically assess the relevant international law and related practice on ethnic conflict resolution;
  • Present and review existing practice on the management of border communities in different regions of Europe;
  • Understand and discuss the effectiveness of the international minority protection regime with a particular focus on identity politics and equality.

This Summer School is envisaged as a space for meeting and consulting with authoritative academics, practitioners, public servants and decision-makers, providing participants the opportunity to share their experiences and present their research projects for discussion.

Eligibility

  • Public servants, decision-makers, teachers in higher education and journalists with an interest in diversity management, equality policies, minority rights, ethnic conflict resolution, geopolitics, and relevant international law;
  • MA and PhD students who wish to acquire competitive personal competence beneficial for their future careers in academia or in practice-oriented professions;
  • Members of civil society organisations, practitioners;
  • Everyone who is interested in recent developments, current theories and advanced training in the field of minority protection.

A good command of English is required as the language of the Summer School will be English.

Costs

The participation fee is 150 €. This fee covers tuition, accommodation, meals and cultural events.

The NUPS offers 15 full scholarships. 

Financial support is offered by the TLI and the NUPS.

  • Six full scholarships for overseas applicants cover the participation fee and the travel costs to Budapest (except airport transfer). They do not cover visa fees.
  • Nine partial scholarships cover the participation fee (tuition, accommodation, meals, and cultural events). The travel costs to Budapest are not covered by the partial scholarships.

Applicants for scholarship have to have:

  • Proven current interest or work in the field;
  • Strong motivation to improve their understanding and skills;
  • Demonstrated plans for future activities or career where they can use the knowledge, contacts and skills acquired.

Preference is given to members of national or ethnic, linguistic or religious minorities.

Dunwoody College Career Awareness Program in Minneapolis, MN, USA

June 15-July 17, 9AM-3PM. For high school juniors and seniors. Students have college level courses and are introduced to Dunwoody tech classes. Receive a $100 weekly stipend, a free bus pass and food.

The Youth Career Awareness Program (YCAP) has been a part of Dunwoody College of Technology since 1988.  The program was founded by Mr. Leon Rankin (YCAP Director Emeritus) and President Emeritus Warren Phillips.

Our Mission: To enhance the career opportunities of under-represented youth, by empowering them to graduate from high school and obtain a degree from Dunwoody College of Technology.

We are proud of our statistics which are…

  1. 96% of YCAP students graduate from high school.
  2. 85% of YCAP students go on to post-secondary education at Dunwoody College of Technology.
  3. YCAP has assisted more than 1,250 students since the induction of our program!

Students accepted into the program are current high school juniors, seniors and potential first year Dunwoody College of Technology students. All applicants must be in good academic standing at their schools (2.5 G.P.A or higher), driven to succeed, interested in learning more about Dunwoody’s technical careers and have a strong financial need.

In addition to our mission our goals are to provide more females and students of color who come from a disadvantaged background, the opportunity to attend college. We begin with a six-week summer session, during which the YCAP students come to the Dunwoody campus to learn more about the various technical programs offered at Dunwoody. Students also improve their academic skills by taking College level courses and working on web-based academic soft ware.

Each grade level has a different summer experience
  1. YCAP II – (Entering 12th grade): Students spend their summer completing in-depth projects within 3-4 Dunwoody Departments and take College level courses to sharpen reading, writing, math and study skills.
  2. YCAP III – (Graduated Senior/Dunwoody Student): Students spend their summer completing in-depth projects within 3-4 Dunwoody Departments and take College level courses to sharpen reading, writing, math and study skills.
Monthly School Year Student Workshops

Workshops are hosted at Dunwoody College of Technology once a month for two hours, during which time each group focuses on a theme for the academic year.

10 young people will be selected to job shadow 10 individuals who work in the State Legislature; Senators, Representatives, Legislative Commission staff, Democrats, Republicans, Nonpartisans. The goal of this opportunity is to introduce young people to the kinds of jobs available in their future as leaders in Minnesota.

Who should apply: High school or post-secondary undergrad students who identify as a person of color living in MN.

Day of shadowing: Day starts with breakfast & a brief orientation.

Participating young people are asked to commit to:

* Take the day off to fully participate w/ the person they will shadow.

* Arrive on their own & on time.

* Sign a confidentiality agreement.

* Be engaged during the day.

REACHING OUT TO NATIVE AMERICAN YOUTH TO INSPIRE READING, WRITING, AND HIGHER EDUCATION

The Young Native Writers Essay Contest is a writing contest for Native American high school students and is designed to encourage young Native Americans to write about their experiences as a member of a Native American community and the culture that inspires them.

The voices that emerge from this program honor the legacy of every Native American who has ever lived. Add your words to the thousands submitted through this project – all writers receive a Certificate of Honor for their submission.

The Holland & Knight Charitable Foundation’s goal of promoting education and creating new opportunities for youth has inspired this essay contest. Partnering with Holland & Knight in this endeavor are the National Museum of the American Indian and the National Indian Education Association.

Institutions of Higher Education and their Internationalization Strategies (Frankfurt, Berlin, Dresden)

June 14 – June 20, 2015

DAAD’s information tour “Germany Today 2015” is designed to give participants both a broader overview of Germany’s higher education landscape and a more in-depth understanding of recent developments on the government level as well as within individual institutions. The group will discuss funding opportunities, internationalization strategies, and the potential for co-operation between German and North American institutions.

On this trip, participants will visit Frankfurt, Berlin and Dresden. Frankfurt University and Freie Universität Berlin will share their experience with one of DAAD’s newest and largest funding programs, “Strategic Partnerships and Thematic Networks” with the group. At Technical University Dresden –participants will learn about the role of strategic partnerships for the development of the high level research projects the university is pushing forward. While in Dresden, the group will also visit the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft which belongs to the Universities of Applied Sciences “Fachhochschulen.” Their emphasis on practical orientation makes them very attractive for employers. Besides strategic partnerships other topics currently of relevance for German institutions of higher education and research will also be covered, including training of doctoral candidates in structured PhD programs, the increasing importance of third party funding in research, student and researcher mobility.

At various times during this week, the group will meet additional guests, from the political sphere, from independent research institutes, and from industry, and with ample time for discussion.

The program will be interactive: Our hosts will provide valuable insights into their activities, and you will be asked to share your perspective and expertise with them.

An overview of Germany’s higher education and research systems

  • Specific examples of recent developments in higher education in Germany
  • Insights into universities’ institutional internationalization strategies
  • A thorough analyses of best practice examples.”- from economics, the humanities and the natural sciences
  • Details about select BA and MA programs at recognized universities and universities of applied science
  • PhD programs/training, and transatlantic mobility

    North American participants in this program are typically senior administrators at leading universities in the U.S. and Canada (such as vice presidents for international affairs or heads of international offices), policy makers in federal and state/provincial governments or associations, and other experts in the higher education field.

    The program will be in English. Program-related costs in Germany (accommodation, domestic travel, most meals) will be covered by DAAD. The program officially starts in Frankfurt am Main (where Germany’s biggest international airport is located; a European hub for many airlines) on Sunday afternoon, June 14, 2015 and ends with a dinner on Friday evening, June 19, in Dresden. The night from Friday, June 19, through Saturday, June 20, is still booked and covered by DAAD in our hotel in Dresden (including breakfast).

    Intercontinental travel is at the participant’s expense. Applicants must have U.S./Canadian citizenship or permanent residency, and have special interest in Germany and transatlantic co-operation, and a relevant professional position. They should not have recently participated in another information trip to Germany.

Program Description:

Spend your summer in London and Amman exploring the process of peace and the sensitive cultural and societal roots of conflict. This unique program will begin in the U.K. by studying peace and conflict theory, using Northern Ireland as a case study for beginning to understand how those theories translate to Middle Eastern issues. Once in Amman, use your new understanding of peace and conflict to examine how the Arab/Israeli conflict; regional conflicts such as those in Lebanon, Yemen or Iraq; and tribal conflicts are being addressed.  Following the conclusion of the Peace and Conflict Program, students have the opportunity to stay in Amman and pursue a course in intensive Arabic language, including instruction in both Modern Standard Arabic and Jordanian Arabic.
