The creation of this festival was largely due to the earnest efforts of the two animation filmmakers like Renzo Kinoshita, who at that time was serving as a Board Member of ASIFA and the President of ASIFA-Japan, and Sayoko Kinoshita, who was serving as the General Secretary of ASIFA-Japan. The publication is intended as a resource in educational activities and should support the development of responses to situations of discrimination affecting young people; in this respect, it can be used for advocacy actions at policy level as well. The publication pertaining to this study will be launched during the conference. In brief, the rationale for the conference is based on:

The conference is intended as a forum to raise awareness of and to explore and formulate responses to situations of multiple discrimination affecting young Roma.

The keywords of the activity are:

  • youth event, as the activity aims to bring together a diversity of youth organisations, Roma and non-Roma, that have in common their work on issues relating to discrimination, and also other profiles of participants, such as researchers and policy makers;
  • better understanding, as the activity aims to raise awareness on the specificities of multiple discrimination and their impact on young Roma people;
  • networking, as the activity aims to create an opportunity for organizations working with diverse groups of young people (Roma, LGBT, migrants, young women etc.) to find common concerns;
  • interventions, as the activity aims to bring about proposals for how to address multiple discrimination and what strategies youth organisations and other partners should develop to reflect better in their work the needs of young people affected by multiple discrimination;
  • tools, as the activity aims to promote the study on life stories of young Roma people affected by multiple discrimination.

Eligibility

The conference will gather some 40 participants, with the following profiles:

  • Young people and activists involved in the study on multiple discrimination;
  • Youth leaders and activists from civil society that work on discrimination issues, particularly with regards to the situation of Roma young people;
  • Participants involved in human rights law bodies, human rights monitoring bodies, policy making etc.;
  • Partners of the Roma Youth Action Plan and the LGBT stakeholders;

  • Be available to attend the event for its full duration.

The activity intends to be a youth event primarily and have a direct impact on youth organisations working on anti-discrimination issues.

SAT Essay Becoming Optional, Among Other Changes

From Fastweb/by Elizabeth Hoyt

http://www.fastweb.com/college-search/articles/4192-sat-essay-becoming-optional-among-other-changes?utm_source=nlet&utm_content=fw_c1_20140312

March 06, 2014

The College Board will overhaul the SAT, making drastic changes. These changes will likely be embraced by high school students everywhere as they include making the essay portion optional, the elimination of ambiguous wording throughout the exam and the termination of point deductions for incorrect answers.

The changes will take effect in 2016 – a year that many students will undoubtedly consider their lucky break.

According to David Coleman, president and chief executive officer of the College Board, the changes to the SATaddress concerns of educators, parents and students regarding costly standardized test preparation and the fact that the exams have become increasingly disengaged from the high school students’ actual curriculum.

“It is time to admit that the SAT and ACT have become disconnected from the work of our high schools,” Coleman is reported as saying in a speech in early March regarding the changes. “Too many feel that the prevalence of test prep and expensive coaching reinforces privilege rather than merit.

“We’ve also been listening to students and their families for whom these tests are often mysterious and filled with unproductive anxiety,” said Coleman. “They are skeptical that either the SAT or the ACT allows them to show their best work.”

Coleman urges that the overhaul’s goal is to create “an exam that is clearer and more open than any in our history.”

He wants students and families to feel more comfortable in their perceptions of the SAT and, almost as a measure of trust and good faith, he’s already publicly shared the essay question that will be on the new optional portion of the exam:

“As you read the passage in front of you, consider how the author uses evidence such as facts or examples, reasoning to develop ideas and to connect claims and evidence, and stylistic or persuasive elements to add power to the ideas expressed. Write an essay in which you explain how the author builds an argument to persuade an audience.”

The source in which the passage is taken from, of course, will vary.
