Syngenta Photography Award 2016

Awards: two types of awards available

Description

Launched in 2012, the Syngenta Photography Award is an international competition that aims to draw attention to and stimulate dialogue around key global challenges through powerful photography. Since the inaugural competition, the Award has received over 5,000 submissions from all over the world.

The Syngenta Photography Award invites professional and amateur photographers to submit applications in two categories – The Professional Commission and the Open Competition. The Award offers total prize money of US$65,000, including a US$25,000 professional commission.

This year’s theme is Grow-Conserve. As the world’s population continues to increase, so does the tension between our growing demand for more food, energy and resources, and the protection of our planet. How can we manage economic, social and technological growth in a way that supports the needs of today as well as for future generations? Bold and transformative action is needed*.

Photographers, whatever their approach, are invited to submit images that explore the theme of Grow-Conserve and tell stories about the relationship and trade-offs that exist between these two forces that are shaping the sustainability of our planet. An exhibition of photographs submitted for the Award alongside the winning images will be open from March 2017 in various international venues. Previous Syngenta Photography Award exhibitions have toured in countries including Belgium, Brazil, Italy and the UK.

Eligibility

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • Applications for the Professional Commission:

Professional photographers are invited to submit a series of 5–10 compelling images relating to the theme of Grow-Conserve, accompanied by a creative project proposal of a maximum of 500 words. The proposal should include description of the project as well as a budget that would require the grant of US$25,000. Professional photographers are also invited to apply for the Open Competition.

  • Applications for the Open Competition:

The Open Competition is open to all photographers who are 18 years or older on August 22, 2016 whether amateur, professional or student. Photographers are invited to submit between 1–3 thought-provoking and captivating images exploring the theme of Grow-Conserve. Awards

Prizes – Professional Commission Category:

  • First prize: US$15,000 – the winner will also receive a commission worth up to an additional US$25,000 to explore the theme of the Award in a more in-depth way
  • Second prize: US$10,000
  • Third prize: US$5,000

The Commission allows the Award to generate a new body of work that contributes to the contemporary debate about the topic, allowing the Award to continue to spark discussion around key global challenges.

The Syngenta Photography Award – previous themes and winners:

The inaugural Syngenta Photography Award (2012/13) theme was ‘Rural-Urban’, which explored the relationship and tensions between urban and rural environments.

2016 Project Inspire: 5 Minutes to Change the World

Open to: representatives of existing organizations, individual or as a team of up to three members
Grant: USD 25,000/ winning project, USD 10,000 grant/running-up

Description

Project Inspire is a global initiative by Singapore Committee for UN Women and MasterCard, for organisations to win up to USD 25,000 for the project proposals. This year’s theme is “Empowering Women and Girls through Safety and Security”, focusing on women and/or girls in the Asia and/or Pacific region. This can range from food security, to health, sanitation, financial, physical, and emotional security (more about submission rules in the official call HERE).

Eligibility

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • Open to both males and females;
  • Representants fo an existing organization;
  • Participants may submit entries as an individual or as a team of up to three members;
  • If submitting as an individual, you must be between the ages of 18-35;
  • If submitting as a team, at least one member of the team must be between the ages of 18-35 (the team leader will travel to Singapore to represent your project in the finals.

Grant

  • A USD 25,000 grant will be awarded to the winning project;
  • A USD 10,000 grant will be awarded to the runner-up.

If you can submit an application before 31 May 2016, you will stand a chance at receiving tailored feedback from us to improve your application. The final deadline for all submissions is 1 July.

International Summer School Georgian Manuscript

Description

We are pleased to announce that the international summer school Georgian Manuscript will be held this summer in Tbilisi, Georgia. The event is organized by Korneli Kekelidze National Centre of Manuscripts (NCM). The school scheduled to start on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 and end on July Thursday 28, 2016.

This program is intended for the foreign researchers and students interested in Georgian history and culture, especially in Georgian script and manuscript heritage which are an essential part of the European culture and integral to the medieval studies. The International Summer School “Georgian Manuscript” aims to share the knowledge and research experience of the Georgian scholars with the foreign participants, develop the international cooperation, and create a community of researchers inspired by the Georgian manuscript heritage.

Costs

While staying in Tbilisi, the participants’ expenses regarding accommodation and food will be covered by the NCM. Please, note that the travel costs are not covered and/or reimbursed by our institution, thus it is up on the selected candidates to purchase round trip flight, train, bus, etc. tickets.

NISA Summer Session 2016 in Baku, Azerbaijan

Description

In an attempt to contribute to the 2016 Warsaw Summit discussions, NISA Summer Session aims at bringing together young professionals and scholars from around the world to conduct a pre-Summit brainstorming session where the participants will focus on the issues relevant to NATO’s Warsaw Summit agenda, including NATO’s ability and readiness to respond to the crisis situations in its closest proximity, among others. How prepared is NATO to cope with regional security challenges? What are the existing toolkits and policy directions? What should be the most tangible policy prescriptions in regard to each conflict situation? These and many other similar questions will guide the discussions, at the end of which the participants will come forth with set of policy recommendations for the 2016 Warsaw Summit.

This event will involve notable academics and practitioners from governments, international institutions and think tanks as well as graduate students, researchers, early to mid-career academics, experts and practitioners, interested in international relations, international law, politics and economics, including in issues related to Euro-Atlantic area.

The International Youth Peace Forum: Global Youth Rising 2016

GYR 2016 is 10 days of intensive trainings, discussions, workshops and practical strategic planning with some of the leading organisations, activists, trainers and practitioners in the world covering peacebuildingconflict transformationyouth participation and empowerment and much, much more. The International Youth Peace Forum: Global Youth Rising 2016 will be held this year from July 10 – 20.

There is a special focus in this year’s International Youth Forum on key issues including:

  • Building a global solidarity movement and campaigns in our countries with the people of Syria, Iraq, Libya and Yemen to overcome and end the wars in those countries;
  • Building a solidarity movement with the people of Ukraine to help support efforts to end the war and division in Ukraine;
  • Linking together practitioners, activists, organisations and movements working to bring about a fundamental shift in how the world deals with conflicts, replacing war, violence and the global weapons industry with practical and effective means of handling conflicts;
  • Inner peace, resilience, leadership and cultivating peace within to empower, strengthen and support our engagement in often difficult and challenging contexts;
  • Introducing peace education into our schools and societies

Eligibility

Are you engaged in youth activism or peacebuilding? Do you want to meet inspiring people from around the world working for the same goals of peace and social justice?

The Global Youth Rising summer camp is aimed at young people already active as activists or peacebuilders aged 18-30, although older participants are welcome to apply. Our goal is to create as a diverse a group of participants as possible. We are hoping to draw youth from around the world working in many different fields of positive change.

Costs

We aim to keep costs as low as possible in the interests of making the camp as accessible as possible. Course contributions covering the entire 10 day programme, accommodation and food are:

  1. OECD participants: 500 EUR
  2. Non-OECD participants: 300 EUR

Camping (bring your own tent; we have beautiful spaces for camping, with access to showers, toilets, and food is still included): 200 EUR

Costs cover:

  • Transportation from Cluj-Napoca to the youth peace forum location;
  • Ten nights of accommodation at the camp (10th-20th July) – a bed in a shared room or a space for camping (depending on your fee)
  • Dinner on the 10th July, all meals from 11th-19th July (breakfast, lunch and dinner), breakfast on the 20th, and refreshments throughout the day;
  • All training and workshops, morning and evening activities;
  • One excursion from the camp (you will be able to select between hiking or white-water rafting).

Costs do not cover:

  • The costs of obtaining a visa to enter Romania (if applicable);
  • Transport to Cluj-Napoca;
  • Extra charge (+150 EUR) if you wish to have your own bedroom;
  • Any meals or accommodation outside the duration of the camp;
  • Any extra excursions that participants choose to partake in while at the camp;
  • Any extra snacks bought during the course dates;
  • Medical/travel insurance.

Organizations sending 3 or more participants can receive an additional 10% discount.

Funded placements

In order to make the summer camp as accessible as possible, it is our hope to be able to provide a number of funded or discounted placements for participants. At present, we are applying for funding that may allow us to offer 5-10 discounted or funded places to youth activists/peacebuilders, so please keep checking our website for more information.

It is possible that your organization or local organizations connected with peace-building might be willing to help fund your placement at the Global Youth Rising camp. If this is not possible, please contact us about how you can set up an online donation page and spread the word so that you can raise funds towards your trip!

Description

The Human Science International Course in the Graduate School of Design, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan, invites Graduate School students studying outside of Japan to the 2016 Human Science Summer School. Those of you eligible and interested in the education of our International Course are encouraged to apply. We offer financial support and course credits, as well as course education and laboratory experience.

The Human Science Summer School provides a program consisting of 15 lectures of 90 min (see schedule). (mornings) in combination with research experience at a laboratory of a faculty member of your choosing (afternoons). The lecture course, Advanced Design and Technologies for Human Science, is designed as an overview of the whole curriculum of the Human Science International Course.

Eligibility

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

(1)  Graduate School students of universities/institutes outside Japan.

(2)  Those who are interested in education and research of our Human Science International Course.

(3)  Those with sufficient English capability to follow 15 lectures and do laboratory work.

(4)  Those who can get a recommendation from their current supervisor.

Financial support

  • Full or partial support is provided for (1) an economy-class air ticket to and from Japan, (2) accommodation, and (3) meals. The total amount may vary among participants, taking account of the participants’ total amount of air fares, our budget, and whether you have support from your university or not.
  • You will stay at a dormitory room with a kitchenette and free LAN.

The participants will be selected on basis of academic records and supervisor recommendation, We give priority to MA students and encourage faculty staff to apply. Please note that Undergraduate or Doctoral students cannot apply. There is no age limit.

BestPrep Minnesota Business Venture Program

Learn how to create your own business at BestPrep’s Minnesota Business Venture (MBV) program. MBV is a week-long, residential summer program that brings 9-12th grade students together to learn about leadership, business, financial literacy, and career options. Students spend a week on campus at St. Cloud State University (July 10-15) or St. John’s University (July 24-29) to experience college life firsthand. Business Leaders, speakers, mock interviewers and other volunteers mentor and guide students through the week’s activities, including creating a business plan in a group, or “company.”

Scholarships are available for students on free or reduced lunch.

Co-organised by JEF Europe and JEF Malta, the international seminar “European Y.O.U.T.H.: Welcoming refugees!” will take place from the 6 – 10 July in Valletta, Malta.

Eligibility

Young people aged 18-30 years who are citizens of one of the 47 member states of the Council of Europe + citizens of Belarus. Applications from non-eligible persons will not be taken into account.

Costs

Participation fee: €100 (€50 for locals and anyone who does not need accommodation) – (8 scholarships of 70 EUR will be provided based on the quality of the response with the regard to the applicant’s motivation.)

Travel reimbursement: 70% of the travel costs (up to max. 150€)

*JEF Europe and JEF Malta will assist in visa procedures if needed.
