The New Media Writing Prize showcases exciting and inventive stories that integrate a variety of formats, platforms, and digital media. This international prize is now in its 5th year. The prize encourages and promotes the best in new media writing and is leading the way toward the future of the ‘written’ word and storytelling. In the past four years, the NMWP has attracted entries from the very best and most innovative writers in the field.

Eligibility

Students, bloggers, artists and writers can submit their innovative storytelling to a contest.

Award

The overall winner will receive GBP1,000 (US$1,607). The student winner will receive a three-month work placement at the leading e-learning company Unicorn Training, in Dorset, United Kingdom. There will also be a People’s Choice winner.

The competition CHALLENGE YOUR PERSPECTIVES is your chance to show that you have the engineering and business skills to join the department of TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT AND ECONOMICS at CHALMERS UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY.

Eligibility

The competition is open to those who meet either of the following criteria:

  • U.S. citizen or legal U.S. resident currently enrolled at a university, or recent bachelor’s graduate
  • International student currently enrolled in bachelor’s program at a U.S. university or holding a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. university

Swedish citizens are not eligible to participate in the competition, nor are non-Swedish students currently enrolled at Chalmers University eligible for participation.

In order to be eligible to claim the prize (a full tuition fee waiver), the winner needs to fulfill the enrollment requirements of Chalmers University of Technology and the specific requirements for each master’s program. The winner must be accepted into one of the four master’s programs at Chalmers’ Technology Management and Economics department, and the scholarship granted to the winning student is contingent upon his/her acceptance into their chosen program. The formal admission acceptance will be provided by University Admissions in March 2015.
NOTE: Winning the competition does not mean that admission to a master’s program is automatically guaranteed.

Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree in engineering, science or architecture, or be in their last year of studies leading to this degree.
Note: Students interested in the program in Entrepreneurship and Business Design may also apply with a bachelor’s degree in Business, Law or Design.

The Smithsonian magazine is accepting submissions for its annual photo contest.

Contestants can submit up to 15 photos to each of the following six categories: the natural world, travel, people, the American experience, altered images and mobile photos.

Vacancy for IHF Co-Director (Volunteering)

If you’re looking for a long-term volunteering opportunity, the International Humanity Foundation is offering you the chance to help in our children’s home.

 

IHF is looking for hard-working, committed volunteers to help in our six centers in Thailand, Kenya and Indonesia. IHF provides education, and in some cases, homes, to children. IHF has no central headquarters; each center is a product of its environment and follows the cultural code and norms of its host country.

 

We have four centers in Indonesia, in Bali, Jakarta, Medan and Banda Aceh. Our Jakarta and Aceh centers provide homes to a small number of children, while all centers offer English, math and computer classes to disadvantaged children. With a population of over 240 million, Indonesia’s public education system often fails to give children a chance to escape the poverty they were born into. We fill that gap and give kids a chance to aim higher.

 

Our Thailand center is a home for hill-tribe children. Children from this marginalised community come to our center for a stable home and a chance for an education.

 

Our Kenya center is a children’s home and also provides emergency relief to the surrounding community. This is the biggest IHF center, with approximately 100 kids. The kids are from the marginalised Pokot tribe, whose conditions are amongst the worse in Kenya. Living conditions in this region are harsh, and we provide basic needs such as a home, food, and access to education to children who would otherwise go without. We also run livestock donation projects and other initiatives to relieve the extreme poverty where we can.

 

At the center, you will divide your time between caring for the children and working on international tasks. IHF is a grassroots, all-volunteer organisation with no central office, so all administration work is done in center. All volunteers manage one or more of our international task teams such as university relations, fundraising and media; working together online with volunteers in other centers. You will be assigned according to your experience. You must possess excellent time management skills.
Those who are secure without the comforts of home gain the most from this valuable opportunity. We are looking for applicants preferably with:

– A related university degree; eg. in social studies, language, teaching, medicine, law, social work

– Experience abroad; travel, working or volunteering

– 1-2 years working experience in any field

– Experience with teaching and/or children

Fluency in English, both written and spoken is essential. Those interested in volunteering at an IHF centre are required to complete a level of pre-trip duties in order to gain an understanding of how our organization functions.

 

Stipend: Volunteers must commit to serve at least a year at the center. Basic accommodation and food is provided by IHF. You are a volunteer at the center, and all local tasks completed are done so without pay. Volunteers who commit to serving one year or more will receive a small monthly stipend. It is broken down as follow:-

 

First 3 months: Training period – $20 per month

 

3-6 months: Assistant co-Director – $50 per month

 

6-9 months: Co-Director – $80 per month

 

9-12 months: Co-Director – $100 per month

 

This stipend results only from the international online work; not from any local tasks.

 

After one year there is the opportunity to become a full Director.

 

Strict IHF Policy: These stipends are fixed. They will not be raised for more experienced applicants, and everyone will be upgraded according to the timeframes outlined above, and no sooner. There are no exceptions to this, regardless of what may be the situation in the centre. We are an all-Volunteer organization and training and hands-on experience is paramount.

The Global Innovation Fund Grant Opportunity

The Global Innovation Fund is an independent global nonprofit organization which invests in social innovations that aim to improve the lives and opportunities of millions of people in the developing world.

Through their grant programme they look for innovative solutions to global development challenges with the potential for substantially greater impact than existing approaches, especially for poor and vulnerable groups. GIF is open to funding a wide range of innovative organisations and projects at varying stages in their development, ranging from early start-up stages to larger scale implementation. GIF offers three stages of financing to pilot, test and scale innovations.  It supports innovators who are committed to using and generating rigorous evidence about what works, and invests the largest funding amounts in innovations that can demonstrate evidence of success and that have potential to spread across multiple emerging markets.

Eligibility

GIF supports teams from social enterprises, for-profit firms, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and researchers across all relevant sectors and doing work based in any eligible country in the developing world.

Grant

GIF offers grants, loans (including convertible debt), and equity investments ranging from £30,000 to £10 million. Applicants are asked to indicate their preferred capital type and amount on their application.

Application

The GIF’s application process involves three steps:

  • 1.Initial application: applicants must register HERE and submit a summary business plan or project proposal with an explanation of how the innovation creates social impact.
  • 2.Full application: after submitting an Initial Application, the most competitive applicants will be invited to provide additional information through the submission of a Full Application, which requires a more detailed description of the applicant’s innovation plan.
  • 3.Grant agreement: once an application has been conditionally approved through GIF’s review process, GIF will negotiate a funding agreement with the applicant.

There is no deadline for this grant scheme. Applicants are encouraged to apply at any time, and GIF will review applications on a rolling basis.

International Conference on “European and Eurasian migration system: similarities and ” in Russia

We kindly invite you to take part in the International scientific-practical conference “European and Eurasian migration system: similarities and differences of legal regulation”, which will be held on 11-12 December 2014 at Kazan Federal University.
This International conference seeks to address the urgent issues of modern science and practice in the field of migration:

  • what are the main features of European and Eurasian migration systems?
  • How do the two systems interact with each other?
  • how migration processes are regulated in the framework of regional organizations in Europe and the former Soviet Union: such as in the EU, the CIS and EurAsEC?
  • what are similarities and differences in the legal regulation of the two migration systems?
  • what are the trends and prospects for the legal regulation of migration processes in the European Union and in the Eurasian area?

The conference will be conducted by the Department for International and European Law of the Law Faculty, the Centre of the European Union VOICES, the Institute for the Comparative Studies of Modernity, Kazan Federal University.

The conference is structured around the following areas:

  • The Existence of independent European and Eurasian migration system within the concept of migration systems;
  • Points of contact between European and Eurasian migration systems: the impact of the migration policies of the former Soviet Union and the European Union;
  • International legal regulation of migration to the EU, the CIS and EurAsEC: similarities and differences;

The Bellagio Resident Fellows program offers a serene setting conducive to focused, goal-oriented work, and the unparalleled opportunity to establish new connections with fellow residents from a stimulating array of disciplines and geographies. Eligibility

Residencies are open to university or think-thank based academics in all disciplines, creative artists, journalists, as well as policymakers and practitioners from the governmental and non-profit sectors. We bring together a broad, stimulating mix of disciplines and fields within the Bellagio Community. We have a strong interest in applications that align with the Foundation’s core issue areas: Advance Health, Revalue Ecosystems, Secure Livelihoods, and Transform Cities, but projects from all fields are welcomed.

The Center accepts individuals as well as collaborative residencies for teams of two to four people working on the same project. Residencies are typically four weeks in length.

For those who have previously applied or had previous residencies, there is a maximum limit of three applications and a maximum limit of two residencies. Previous residents and spouses must wait a minimum of five years before applying.

Fellowship

Room and board are provided to all residents and their spouses/partners. Airfare is not included in the residency program; however, the foundation does have a limited travel assistance program based on the income of invited residents.

Call for Applications: UNAOC Fellowship Programme 2014

Description

The UNAOC (United Nations Alliance of Civilizations) Fellowship Programme was created recognizing the need to build bridges between cultures and societies through dialogue and cooperation. The objective of the Fellowship programme 2014 is to facilitate positive cooperation and understanding between the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Europe and North America (EUNA) by supporting emerging leaders from these regions to develop a nuanced understanding of each other.

This year 15 emerging leaders from Europe and North America will visit three or four countries in the MENA region during the first half of December 2014. The exposure visit will allow fellows to engage with prominent personalities and institutions in areas such as Government, International Organizations, civil society, media, social impact entrepreneurs, religion and culture. It is expected that through gaining a deeper understanding of the MENA region, fellows will be better able to identify bridges for communication, social business opportunities and dialogue entry points between the two regions.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for the fellowship you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be national of USA, Canada or Europe;
  • Be between 26-38 years old;
  • Be fluent in written and spoken English;
  • Possess a passport valid at least 6 months beyond December 2014;
  • Be available to travel for a period of up to 15 days in the first half of December 2014 as scheduled by UNAOC;
  • Be professional in one of these areas: civil society organizations, traditional and social media, politics, government, community movements/initiatives, faith based organizations, social impact entrepreneurship, academia, think tanks or other field relevant to the objective of the programme.

Fellowship

The Fellowship Programme is made possible thanks to a grant of the German Federal Foreign Office. The Fellowship will cover accommodation, travel costs and a small living allowance.

International Film Festival Rotterdam Trainee Project for Young Film Critics

The International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) seeks applicants for its 2015 training program. The IFFR Trainee Project for Young Film Critics offers motivated and talented journalists a chance to cover a major international film festival.

The program includes reporting on the festival for the Daily Tiger, publishing a blog on IFFR’s website, meeting with experienced film critics and reporting for participants’ home media outlets.

International Film Festival Rotterdam welcomes applications for the 17th Trainee Project for Young Film Critics taking place during its 44th festival edition (21 January – 1 February 2015).

International Film Festival Rotterdam supports film making, film producing and journalistic talent on several levels: the main festival section Bright Future (including competitions for both features and shorts) presents recent works by first and second time filmmakers; Rotterdam’s Hubert Bals Fund contributes to film projects in developing countries and co-production market CineMart organizes a trainee project for young film producers (Rotterdam Lab) in close collaboration with its partner organizations. Recognizing the important role of film criticism to the perception of independent cinema, IFFR organizes a trainee project for young film critics.

Eligibility

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • Age under 30 years
  • Fluent command of the English language (written and spoken)
  • Demonstrable experience in film criticism (print or online media)
  • Not yet established enough to profit from facilities as attending international film festivals outside your country
  • Have agreement(s) with relevant print and/or online media to publish reports on International Film Festival Rotterdam 2015

Costs

The organizers will cover hotel accommodations from Jan. 22 to 29 and partial refunds of travel costs when participants are traveling from outside Europe.

The AYLTLC Organizing Committee is inviting student leaders to participate in AYLTLC 2015. Applications are on individual basis, and the criteria of eligibility are described below.

The following are eligible to be a AYLTLC participant:

  • Students aged 14-26(at least 14 but not older than 26 of age at the time of AYLTLC 2015) from schools, colleges and universities around the world.
