2015 Request for Applications: Opportunity on Health Disparities & Cancer Research

The University of Minnesota Medical School’s Program in Health Disparities Research and the Masonic Cancer Center are pleased to announce the seventh annual summer undergraduate internship on health disparities and cancer research.

 

Program Description

The 2015 summer internship on cancer and health disparities is an eight-week program designed to give undergraduate students from Minnesota’s racial/ethnic minority and under-represented communities’ research experience in the health sciences. During the program, participants will:

  • Learn how health disparities are addressed through community-engaged research;
  • Gain hands-on experience with an experienced faculty mentor in basic biomedical, translational, clinical, and/or community-based research;
  • Attend seminars and workshops on topics such as interdisciplinary research and the root causes of health disparities;
  • Discuss careers in health sciences with University of Minnesota professionals;
  • Sign-up to shadow a clinician;
  • Work with a research team at the current stage of their project(s); and
  • Present a poster to academic members and community partners at the end of the summer.

The internship program dates are: June 22-August 14, 2015. Internships positions are full-time (Monday-Friday from approximately 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM).

Interns will be matched with a mentor in the Program in Health Disparities Research or the Masonic Cancer Center. The mentor matching process will begin prior to the start date.

Interns will receive a rate of $12.00 per hour.

Expectations for Applicants

Students who apply are required and responsible for:

  • Providing their own laptop computer.

  • Demonstrating professionalism at all times.
  • Committing to work full-time for the entire duration of the 8-week program (up to three days of unpaid leave will be permitted).

 

Eligibility

Eligible applicants must be:

  • An incoming sophomore, junior, or senior undergraduate student.
  • Enrolled in a 2 or 4 year college/university in Minnesota or be a Minnesota resident attending a 2 or 4 year accredited college/university within the United States.
  • Interested in pursuing a career in research or a health science profession.
  • From an under-represented community. This may include students who self-identify with a racial/ethnic minority community, first generation college students, LGBTQ, rural and/or low socio-economic backgrounds.

IPAK Center is proud to announce the Call for Participants and our lecturers for the Summer School for Sexualities, Cultures and Politics 2015! Lee Edelman, Lynn Huffer, Elisabeth von Samsonow, Boyan Manchev, Jenny Sundén, Susanna Paasonen, and Mirjana Stošić. Special artist appearances: Ana Hoffner and TKV. The programme includes the workshop “Think Outside the Cocks”, as well as Open Lectures and exhibitions.

The Summer School for Sexualities, Cultures and Politics 2015 will take place at the Faculty of Media and Communications in Belgrade from 16-23 August 2015.

Eligibility

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • Applicants should be postgraduate students (preferably MA or PhD students or younger researchers) interested in exploring the issues of gender, queer, cultural studies, visual arts and humanities and related areas. However, outstanding BA students are also considered and have the chance to enroll.
  • We especially welcome applications from independent scholars, cultural workers and artists.
  • Applicants from all countries are eligible to apply.

Costs

  1. Appplicants from Central and East-european countries*: 300 Euro (discount applicable).

RESEARCH  SCHOLARSHIP

Spend  18  or  24  months  conducting  independent  research  at  a  university  in  Japan  under  the  supervision  of   a  professor.  Research  can  be  conducted  in  any  field  of  study.

Requirements:  Bachelor’s  Degree,  U.S.  Citizenship,  age  34  or  younger  at  time  of  departure. Benefits:  Full  tuition,  Airfare,  ¥143,000  monthly  stipend.  Free  housing  may  be  available.

Timeline:  Applications  available  in  April  and  due  in  June.  In-person  interviews  and  exams  in  July.  Depart   for  Japan  in  April  or  September  of  the  following  year.

JAPANESE  STUDIES   SCHOLARSHIP

College  students  majoring  in   Japanese  Language  or  Studies   can  spend  1  year  furthering   their  studies  at  a  university  in   Japan.

ADA International Fellowship named after Alimardan bay Topchubashov

ADA was established in 2006, transformed into university by the decree of President in 2014 and is accredited by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
ADA University is dedicated to preparing innovative global leaders and to promoting useful collaborative research on diplomacy, public and international affairs, business, humanities and sciences, information technologies and system engineering. ADA University has launched an International Fellowship program meant to prepare global leaders who have a strong commitment to serve a public cause.

Selection criteria

International Fellowship Requirements:

  • ADA University offers this fellowship to international students applying for graduate (http://www.ada.edu.az/en-US/Pages/apply_graduate.aspx) and undergraduate (http://www.ada.edu.az/en-US/Pages/apply_undergraduate.aspx) programs.
  • Applicant should first be admitted into ADA University. Only admitted and enrolled students are eligible for the Fellowship.
  • Undergraduate fellows must obtain a minimum annual GPA level of 2.5 for continuation of the fellowship.
  • Graduate fellows must obtain a minimum semester GPA level of 3.0 for continuation of the fellowship.
  • Recipients are expected to actively engage in ADA community.

Grant award period:

Fellowship recipients are not required to reapply to the fellowship yearly. Fellowship is automatically renewed if students meet the renewal requirements at the end of a year of enrollment. Undergraduate fellows must obtain a minimum annual GPA level of 2.5 for continuation of the fellowship. Graduate fellows must obtain a minimum semester GPA level of 3.0 for continuation of the fellowship.

The Heinrich Böll Foundation Scholarships 2015

Description

The Heinrich Böll Foundation grants scholarships to approximately 1,000 undergraduates, graduates, and PhD students of all subjects and nationalities per year, who are pursuing their degree at universities, universities of applied sciences (‘Fachhochschulen’), or universities of the arts (‘Kunsthochschulen”). They expect their scholarship recipients to have excellent academic records, to be socially and politically engaged, and to have an active interest in the basic values of the foundation: ecology and sustainability, democracy and human rights, self determination and justice.

Eligibility

For an undergraduate and graduate scholarship:

1. General student scholarships for German and German-educated applicants: Students in all subjects who are pursuing a FIRST DEGREE (Bachelor, Staatsexamen, Diplom) and who earned their university entrance qualification in Germany;

2. Student scholarship – journalism: “Medienvielfalt, anders: Junge Migrantinnen und Migranten in den Journalismus” (for Germans and candidates who study in Germany – Bildungsinländer/innen): This programme is aimed at German or German-educated students with a migration background who wish to become journalists;

3. International students on a MASTERS course in any subject who earned their university entrance qualification outside Germany (Bildungsausländer/innen) and are studying, or wish to study, in Germany.

For a doctoral scholarship:

1. Doctoral students from inside and outside Germany for a doctoral scholarship in the focus programme “Transformation Research”;

2. International doctoral students in all subjects who earned their university entrance qualification outside Germany and are pursuing, or wish to pursue, doctoral studies in Germany (Bildungsausländer/innen).

Special consideration will be given to applicants from the following focus regions: central and eastern Europe, the EU’s neighbouring states and the CIS, the Middle East and North Africa (especially Syria, Egypt, Tunisia, Israel), transition and newly industrialised countries, and conflict regions worldwide.

Good or very good knowledge of German (at least B2 Level) is required. The selection workshops are generally held in German. If a scholarship is granted, intensive German courses may be funded.

Scholarship

The scholarship amount varies and may include family and/or childcare allowance, health insurance or similar.

For undergraduate and graduate students

  • who are German/EU nationals or those educated in Germany, the amount varies according to parental income or own assets or earnings: max. €597 plus €300 book allowance per month.
  • For non-EU nationals and students not educated in Germany, the amount is €750 per month, plus € 100 mobility allowance per month, plus various individual allowances.

At the doctoral level:

  • German/EU nationals or those educated in Germany receive €1,050 per month basic scholarship plus €100 per month research costs allowance.
  • For non-EU nationals and students not educated in Germany, the amount is €1,000 per month, plus € 100 mobility allowance per month, plus various individual allowances.

Applications are accepted from international applicants once per year – 1 March. The 1 September deadline applies to undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students from inside Germany only.

The Romanian State Scholarships to foreign citizens 2015- 2016

Deadline: 15 March 2015
Open to: candidates from non-EU countries
Scholarship: tuition, accommodation, monthly allowance

Description

Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of National Education, in keeping with Romanian current legislation offer 85 scholarships for under- and post-graduate studies in Romania to citizens of non-EU countries. 

The scholarships are granted for three levels of study:

  1. for the first cycle (licenta): dedicated to graduates of high schools or of equivalent pre-university systems, as well as to candidates who require the equivalent of partial studies and the continuation of their studies in Romania. The complete cycle of university studies lasts for 3 to 6 years, according to the specific requirements of the chosen faculty, and ends with a final examination (licenta);
  2. for the 2nd cycle (master): dedicated to graduates of university/post graduate studies; it lasts for 1,5 to 2 years and ends with a dissertation;
  3. for the 3rd cycle (doctorate): dedicated to the graduates of university/postgraduate studies (i.e. master); it lasts for 3-4 years, in keeping with the specific requirements of the chosen faculty, and ends with a doctor’s thesis.

Priority will be given to the candidates applying for: political and administrative sciences, education studies, Romanian culture and civilization, journalism, technical studies, oil and gas, agricultural studies, veterinary medicine, architecture, music, arts, music.

The study language is the Romanian language. The candidates who do not know Romanian are offered one supplementary preparatory year to study the language.

Eligibility

Candidates from non-EU states. Priority is given to citizens from non-EU states with which Romania does not have cultural and education cooperation agreements.

Scholarship

  • free-of-charge tuition;
  • free-of-charge accommodation;
  • financial support – a monthly amount representing :
    • EUR 65 per month, for the under-graduate students (1st cycle),
    • EUR 75 per month, for post-graduate students (master degrees and specialization) 2nd cycle
    • EUR 85 per month, for post graduate students (doctor’s degree) 3rd cycle.

Application

To get all necessary information about the scholarships (conditions, necessary documents, enrollment calendar) and to submit their application files, the candidates should apply directly to:

  • the Romanian diplomatic missions accredited to the candidate’s country of origin or of residence or to
  • the diplomatic mission of candidate’s state of origin accredited to Bucharest

The deadline for submitting the application files is established by each diplomatic mission. The candidate should enquire at the diplomatic mission about the enrollment calendar, starting 3 December 2014. Foreign diplomatic missions accredited to Bucharest must send the application files to Ministry of Foreign Affairs by 15 March 2015, at the latest.

International Winter School 2015 in Kraków, Poland

The Centre for European Studies, Jagiellonian University and the ARENA Centre for European Studies, University of Oslo are pleased to invite MA and Phd students, as well as anyone interested in the topic  to participate in the international Winter School in English:  “Democracy, expertise and power: the role of experts in modern European societies “

International Winter School will take place 7-15 February 2015, in Krakow, Poland. Participants will take part in seminars conducted by experts from both Jagiellonian and Oslo University on the following issues:

  • the knowledge society, from a theoretical and practical dimension; experts and their role in modern democracies;
  • the role of universities in creating knowledge and implementing the public change;
  • the media as the fourth power; models of democracy;
  • and finally civil society and social movements as new actors on the political scene.

The discussions will enable participants to answer the question of whether knowledge is the driving force of modern democracy or a tool in the hands of technocrats and bureaucrats.
