The 7th International Summer School in German Philosophy

Deadline:  15 April 2017
Open to: students from around the world
Venue: 10-21 July 2017 in Bonn, Germany

Description

The 7th International Summer School in German Philosophy will trace the central debates concerning the concepts of free will and political freedom in the Post-Kantian tradition. This course will attempt to provide a fairly comprehensive critical overview of the theories of political freedom and free will that were so central to Classical German Philosophy in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. We will begin by looking at the ideas of political freedom and free will as they developed among the ancient Greeks, in early Christianity and in Luther’s hugely influential essay The Freedom of a Christian (which influenced among others Kant, Schelling and Hegel). We will then move ahead to consider a family of compatibilist theories of free will that were developed around the middle of the eighteenth century (Hume, Wolff, and the early Kant). We will then briefly consider Kant’s liberal political philosophy and especially the unusual synthesis of incompatibilism and compatibilism that he developed in the Critical period (the Third Antinomy and the Second Critique).

From there, we will move to the Post-Kantian constellation and focus on selected texts by Schopenhauer, Schelling and Hegel. Arguably, the Post-Kantian philosophers confront Kant on metaphysical grounds in that they believe that Kant’s metaphysics of nature gives rise to a placement issue, as it is hard to see how human freedom could fit into a causally closed world-order of the type envisaged by Kant. Hegel, however, revises the Kantian framework in a radical way by attempting in effect to replace a metaphysical conception of free will with his conception of socio-political freedom as laid out in his Phenomenology of Spirit and his mature Philosophy of Right.
Our last focus will be Hegel, who can be seen as developing a distinctive multi-level theory of several different sorts of freedom, including free will, socio-political freedom, and what one might call metaphysical freedom. Finally, we shall consider Nietzsche’s views on free will, which are striking for their tendency to call both the idea of the will and the idea of its freedom radically into question.

The first week of this course will be run by Prof. Dr. Michael Forster, the second by Prof. Dr. Markus Gabriel. As always, we will invite a series of high-profile keynote speakers.

Eligibility

U.S.-Japan Creative Artists Exchange Fellowships

4.25.2015, Katie Cercone, Go! Push Pop Collective (2)The Japan U.S. Friendship Commission offers leading contemporary and traditional artists from the United States the opportunity to spend three to five months in Japan through the U.S.-Japan Creative Artists Program.  Artists go as seekers, as cultural visionaries, and as living liaisons to the traditional and contemporary cultural life of Japan.  They also go as connectors who share knowledge and bring back knowledge. Their interaction with the Japanese public and the outlook they bring home provide exceptional opportunities to promote cultural understanding between the United States and Japan.

Since 1978, the Japan-US Friendship Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) have worked  with the Agency for Cultural Affairs in Japan and the International House of Japan (I-House) to organize the United States-Japan Creative Artists’ Program. Each year five leading U.S.-based artists, representing all genres, are selected from the United States and are provided funding to spend three months in Japan.

This residency program allows the artists to research and experience both the traditional and contemporary artistic milieu of Japan. Artists are free to live anywhere in the country to pursue activities of greatest relevance to their creative process. While many artists chose to remain in Tokyo, others live in Kyoto or other cities, and still others work in rural settings or travel around the countryside. The International House of Japan provides in-depth orientation materials, expert advice and professional contacts, as well as logistical support during the residency period.

The program, which remains a high priority for the Commission and the NEA, is highly competitive and attracts several hundred applications each year. Since 1978, 160 U.S. artists, representing a diverse range of disciplines, have been selected to travel to Japan for this residency.

http://www.jusfc.gov/creative-artists-programs/

Primary Eligibility:

The 3rd Asian Conference on Education for Sustainability (ACES 2017)

Deadline:  27 January 2017
Open to: participants from around the world
Venue: 4– 5 March 2017 at the Tokyu REI Hotel Nagoya, Japan

Description

The rapidly evolving and developing world has contributed to greater world prosperity and interdependence resulting in a global village of diverse social, political, economic, and cultural influences. As education and sustainability propel development, quality education and learning play a crucial role in empowering learners, creating individual and national success, and bringing about social cohesion. By creating and implementing coherent policies that are holistic and humanistic in nature, societies can be more inclusive and better suited for today’s growing challenges.

In recent years, global cooperation, sustainable development and advances in information and communication technology among others have contributed to a greater educated world population improving the quality of life worldwide.  However, this progress often masks the widening gap in education quality, equity and outcomes between social classes within and between states, which contributes to the marginalization of peoples and fractured communities. As cross-border population flows increase and diverse cultures become more intertwined in our global village, it is necessary to understand and integrate the different behaviors, traditions and customs into contemporary education.

With the theme Education for Sustainability in Changing Times, this conference will be a wonderful opportunity to explore current research, trends, and insights about this phenomenon while expanding your professional networks.
