‘Allies in Action’ small fund is open for proposals

We established ‘Allies in Action’ because we believe that for a social change towards acceptance of diversity and towards equality to happen, we need to activate and develop meaningful ties and relationships between different communities, create a diverse support network for LGBTI persons, and be strengthened by voices and expertise of non-activist allies. Simply put, we believe in the power of person-to-person contacts, the significance of committed individuals that become multipliers within their communities, and in bottom-up progress.

We established ‘Allies in Action’ to support impactful, creative, and genuine ideas by local LGBTI communities and those who are ready to contribute by action and knowledge to better environments for LGBTI and to a better understanding of sexual orientation, gender identity, sex characteristics (SOGISC).

The fund is meant to enable initiatives and actions that inform and involve individuals, communities, and groups outside of LGBTI movements. We seek to enable participation of those who are well-placed to have a positive impact on the everyday life experiences of L, G, B, T, or I persons, as well as on improved understanding of SOGISC and diversity. They would contribute through exercising their professions in an ethical way and by sharing information within their professional or social circles. Among these audiences are lawyers, psychologists, educators, social workers, journalists, healthcare professionals, art and culture opinion makers, as well as parents and family of LGBTI and more.

Initiatives supported by ‘Allies in Action’ can have very diverse goals – from stepping up voices of parents of LGBTI, to incorporating SOGISC issues into broader cultural events, to SOGISC-related educational activities/ publications by professionals for their colleagues, etc. We welcome creativity and innovation in approach.

First off, be sure to carefully review our conditions. We would not like you to waste time on a proposal that will not fit the program.

We only support initiatives that:

  • Are led by LGBTI persons and/ or allies of LGBTI (with no limitation in regards presence or absence of official registration of the group);
  • Are implemented locally by groups in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Russia, or Ukraine;
  • Are focused on a specific, carefully selected audience/ target group outside of LGBTI movement and serve to engage, inspire, mobilise individuals and collectives that are in a position to impact everyday realities of LGBTI persons, advocacy capacity of LGBTI organisations, and/ or proper understanding of issues pertaining SOGISC;
  • Demonstrate a clear vision of how this action contributes its bit to a change you want to achieve in your environment;
  • Are concrete and scalable (i.e. with balanced, matching goals and actions);
  • Are endorsed by LGBTI organisations (if proposed by an informal group of allies or activists);
  • Require funding from ‘Allies in Action’ of no more than 5,000 euros (if your initiative will be additionally funded by someone else, then the total combined budget should not exceed 12,000 euros);
  • Value feedback and are interested in the opportunity of engaging external expertise, and therefore commit to regular communication with us in the course of application, implementation, and reporting.

We prefer:

  • Initiatives that feed into, reinforce, and/or diversify other ongoing efforts towards better environment for LGBTI persons and protection of their rights (by you or another group);
  • Genuine and innovative approach to action that is strongly rooted in a local reality, with its limitations, opportunities, and existing relations;
  • Duration of action or initiative of no more than 6 months in total (from receipt of the award to its completion and reporting);
  • Willingness to share experience with colleagues and activists across the above-indicated countries and beyond.

We don’t support:

  • Initiatives proposing direct support and/or services to the LGBTI communities;
  • Initiatives aimed at the anonymous, faceless ‘general public’ or ‘broader audience’, without a clear vision of the specific people (or their groups/ communities) that you want to approach or work with and why you think it is needed;
  • Continuation of regular, ongoing activities;
  • Structural costs, such as ongoing office rental or salaries (please note that honorariums/ one-off fees needed within your specific action can be supported if scalable);
  • Initiatives proposed and managed through external third-party organisations (unless it is a joint action by your group and a local LGBTI organisation). We want to cooperate directly with the groups we support, without an additional layer in-between.

Proposals to which any of the above NO-criteria apply will not be accepted for consideration.

We commit to:

  • Supporting you in planning, implementation, and reporting if you are selected for award;
  • Ensuring that both application and reporting processes are not too heavy, while turning them into our joint learning experience;
  • Connecting you with other individuals, groups, organisations, processes, and materials that you might find interesting and helpful in your work, or where your expertise or experience will benefit others.

How to apply for support?

To begin with, we will need a brief proposal from you that will contain essential information about your group/ organisation and plans and will demonstrate why this program and your initiative are a good match.

Please use this format to share your action plans and send them to us at ILGA-Europe and COC Netherlands. We are looking forward to receive your proposal!

Proposals are reviewed and evaluated by an expert advisory group that consists of representatives of international human rights and donor organisations with experience in the program region and knowledge of the LGBTI landscape there.

You can submit your proposal at any time. However, keep in mind that submissions are reviewed as a pool several times per year.

THE CURRENT ROUND WILL CLOSE ON 18 SEPTEMBER 2016.

After that, you should count on up to two weeks of follow-up communications.

Final decisions will be announced in the first weeks of November.

Successful initiatives are expected to receive funds and to be launched in mid-November and be completed by June.

General Information on USCIRF Internships

  • Currently enrolled students are eligible for internships with USCIRF.
  • All USCIRF internships are paid; course credit may be available.

  • Internships can be full-time (40 hours a week) or part-time (20-30 hours a week) for a minimum of 8 weeks, but not to exceed 16 weeks.

Communications Intern – Programmes Unit Asia at Berlin Office

Communications Intern (October-December 2016)

Democracy Reporting International (DRI) is a non-partisan, independent, not-for-profit organisation registered in Berlin. Democracy Reporting International promotes the political participation of citizens, the accountability of state bodies and the development of democratic institutions world-wide. Democracy Reporting International is currently recruiting a communications intern for its Berlin headquarters to support DRI’s work in Asia (Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka). The intern will support the Asia Team in the areas of communications and project management/administration.

Tasks include:

Communications:

  • Contribute to writing and editing website stories and newsletter articles;
  • Support in drafting and scheduling content for social media channels;
  • Conduct image selection for the website and social media channels;
  • Assist in drafting and editing reports and briefing papers and translating documents;

Project management/administration:

  • Support in the recruitment and management of international experts including travel logistic
  • Support the organisation and its implementation of expert missions as well as workshops and DRI events in Berlin or in-country;
  • Assist in maintaining project files, databases and other resources;
  • Conduct research on current and political affairs in programme countries and the wider Asia region with a particular focus on elections, constitutions and human rights;
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications required:

  • Academic background in law, political science, (South) Asian studies, journalism, public relations or related fields;
  • Experience in media/communications/social media
  • Previous office experience
  • Excellent oral and written English;
  • Proficiency in key computer applications, such as Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • Experience working with Content Management Systems (WordPress) is preferred;
  • Experience with photo and graphic editing software is an asset;
  • Knowledge of the Asian region, with a particular focus on Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Myanmar, is preferable;
  • Experience in project cycle management, communications, and research is an asset;
  • Student status; must be enrolled in university throughout the duration of the internship;

Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships for the Academic Year 2017-2018

Description

The Swiss government, through the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), awards the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships for Foreign Scholars and Artists for the Academic Year 2017-2018. The scheme includes various postgraduate scholarships to foreign scholars and researchers:

  • University research fellowships for scholars, doctorates and post-doctorates at Swiss universities, federal institutes of technology and universities of applied sciences (no scholarships for bachelor or masters studies)
  • Arts scholarships for advanced-level artists at Swiss conservatories and universities of the arts (only for a limited number of countries)

These scholarships provide graduates from all fields with the opportunity to pursue doctoral or postdoctoral research in Switzerland at one of the public funded university or recognized institution.

Description

The Heinrich Böll Foundation grants scholarships to approximately 1,000 undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students of all subjects and nationalities per year, who are pursuing their degree at universities, universities of applied sciences (‘Fachhochschulen’), or universities of the arts (‘Kunsthochschulen’). Scholarship recipients are expected to have excellent academic records, to be socially and politically engaged and to have an active interest in the basic values of the foundation: Ecology and sustainability, democracy and human rights, self determination and justice.

At the time of application, the applicant must have been accepted as a student or doctoral student by a state-recognised institution of higher education in Germany. The applicant has to be accepted by a state-recognised institution at the latest by the beginning of the scholarship.

Eligibility

 

For an undergraduate and graduate scholarship:

  1. General student scholarships for German and German-educated applicants: Students in all subjects who are pursuing a first degree (Bachelor, Staatsexamen, Diplom) and who earned their university entrance qualification in Germany;
  2. Student scholarship – journalism: “Medienvielfalt, anders: Junge Migrantinnen und Migranten in den Journalismus” (for Germans and candidates who study in Germany – Bildungsinländer/innen): This programme is aimed at German or German-educated students with a migration background who wish to become journalists;
  3. International students on a masters course in any subject who earned their university entrance qualification outside Germany (Bildungsausländer/innen) and are studying, or wish to study, in Germany.
For a doctoral scholarship:
  1.  Doctoral students from inside and outside Germany for a doctoral scholarship in the focus programme “Transformation Research”;

Good or very good knowledge of German is required, please supply documentary evidence.

Scholarship

For undergraduate and graduate students:

  • Who are German/EU nationals or those educated in Germany, the amount varies according to parental income or own assets or earnings: max. EUR 597 plus EUR 300 book allowance per month.

At the doctoral level:

  • German/EU nationals or those educated in Germany receive EUR 1,050 per month basic scholarship plus EUR 100 per month research costs allowance.

NAKASEC & Affiliates Encourage Eligible Youth to Apply for DACA 1 and Announce Launch of National AAPI DACA Collaborative Website on 4th Anniversary

WASHINGTON DC— The National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC) and its affiliates, the Korean American Resource and Cultural Center (KRCC) and Korean Resource Center (KRC), shared upcoming/recent DACA events and joined partners in announcing the launch of the AAPI DACA Collaborative website on August 15, 2016.  This day marked four years since President Obama implemented the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The Collaborative strongly encourages eligible young AAPIs to apply for DACA, which has been providing over 728,000 young undocumented immigrants with temporary relief from deportation and a work permit.  Out of the total number of DACA recipients, over 17,000 people immigrated from the top four Asian countries of origin (South Korea, Philippines, India, and Pakistan). There are roughly 1.5 million undocumented Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs), many of whom are eligible for DACA. South Korea has the 7th highest acceptance rate for DACA and an estimated 9,000 of the 44,000 DACA-eligible Korean Americans have applied as of March 2016.

The existing 2012 DACA has not been affected by the Supreme Court’s 4-4 “non-decision” ruling in United States v. Texas on June 23, 2016. The Supreme Court decision does, however, mean that the court injunction prohibiting implementation of DAPA (Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents) and expanded DACA remains in effect.

In 2015 alone, the AAPI DACA Collaborative members held over 400 legal service and over 500 outreach events. Collectively the collaborative received over 1,800 phone calls inquiring about DACA and over half of the callers were potentially DACA eligible. NAKASEC will host a naturalization clinic and DACA Information Session with New American Civic Engagement Alliance (NACEA) on September 25th from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Washington Spencerville Korean Church (1700 Spencerville Rd, Spencerville, MD 20868). In California, community members interested in naturalization or the 2012 DACA application assistance should call KRC’s office (323-680-5725) to schedule an appointment from Monday through Thursday. In Illinois, KRCC has been fundraising for DACA scholarships. In partnership with KRCC, the Korean American Association of Chicago (KAAC) has been fundraising DACA Scholarship for a year and provided full application fees ($465) for 20 Korean American DACA applicants who have recommended by and processed their applications by KRCC and Korean American Community Services (KACS). KAAC also made a video for fundraising for DACA Scholarship and will have a Korean American golf outing event for DACA Scholarship fundraising on Wednesday, August 24 in Chicago, Illinois. Additionally, KRCC’s youth group, Fighting Youth Shouting out for Humanity (FYSH), organized its annual youth-led Coffeehouse on July 23 and raised over $1500, exceeding their fundraising goal. The funds go towards FYSH’s DREAM Scholarship, a scholarship to help undocumented youth pay for DACA application fees.

Ju Hong, National AAPI DACA Collaborative Coordinator, shared: “DACA had opened doors for me to affordable education and to travel back to South Korea to reunite with my ailing grandmother for the first time in over 13 years. I strongly encourage all eligible undocumented AAPI young people to apply for DACA and experience these benefits that others take for granted.”

NAKASEC’s Executive Director Dae Joong Yoon, KRCC’s Executive Director Inhe Choi, and KRC’s Los Angeles Director Joon Bang said: “NAKASEC, KRCC, and KRC encourage all eligible community members to make DACA 1 stronger by applying now. DACA is a program that has opened up doors to education, better paying jobs, and opportunities that others take for granted. The 2012 program is open and ready for new and renewing applicants. The announcement of DACA is a victory our community rightfully won and DACAmented leaders have spoken out about how DACA has positively impacted their lives and their future. Let’s continue to lift up the voices of the hardworking DACA recipients who are represented in all 50 states. We remain committed to engaging in DACA outreach, services, and events and working with the AAPI DACA Collaborative partners across the country to increase both initial and renewal applications rates among the AAPI community. ”

About
Highly qualified final year undergraduate students or those who have received an undergraduate degree of all disciplines may apply for the DAAD Study Scholarship for a full master’s degree program at a German university or for a study at a German university as part of a postgraduate or Master’s degree program completed in the home country.

Eligibility
  • Students in their last year of undergraduate studies at an accredited US or Canadian university.
  • US or Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
  • Foreign nationals who live in the USA or in Canada by the time of application deadline are eligible, if your last degree was obtained in the US/Canada, or you will have received a degree in the US/Canada before your scholarship starts. All other foreign nationals may need to apply via a different DAAD office.
  • Recent BA/BS or MA/MS graduates who completed their last degree no longer than 6 years ago.
  • US/Canadian students in the first year of a master’s degree program in Germany may apply to fund their second year.
  • Applicants may not have been living in Germany for more than 15 consecutive months by the time of application deadline.
Terms of Award
  • Monthly stipends are approximately €750. DAAD will cover health insurance and provide a flat rate subsidy for travel costs. In addition, limited funds are available for a rent subsidy and family allowance.
  • Please note DAAD scholarship recipients are not permitted to receive supplementary funding through any other German funding body. Supplementary funding from a non-German funding body may in some cases be permitted. However, they would then be treated as additional earnings, i.e. grants exceeding the tax-free income level in Germany (currently € 450 per month) would be deducted from the DAAD scholarship, unless the grant payments will be put on hold for the duration of your DAAD scholarship.
  • Study Scholarships are granted for one academic year with the possibility of a one-year extension for those wishing to complete a full degree program in Germany. Please note that the German academic year usually begins on October 1st.
  • If the degree program includes an additional study abroad (outside of Germany) lasting several months, funding for this period abroad is usually only possible under the following conditions:
    – The additional study visit is essential for achievement of the scholarship objective.
    – The additional study period is no longer than a quarter of the scholarship period. Longer periods cannot be funded, even partially.
    – The additional study period does not take place in applicant’s home country.
Application Guidelines for Artistic Fields
  • Deadline: October 31, 2016: Fine Art, Design, Film, Music, Architecture as well as Performing Arts (Drama, Direction, Dance, Choreography, etc.).
  • The DAAD online portal will close automatically at 11 PM Central European Time (5 PM EST/4PM CST/3PM MTN/2PM PST) on the deadline date.Applicants are advised to start the application process at least one week before the closing date.
  • Results will be announced on the portal by the end of March.

Application Guidelines for Graduates of All Disciplines
  • Deadline : November 4, 2016
  • The application is submitted online through the DAAD portal.
  •  In addition, you are required to mail 3 copies of the “Application summary” (PDF File), which is generated in the DAAD portal after the online application procedure has been completed.
  • The portal will close automatically at 11 PM Central European Time (5 PM EST/4PM CST/3PM MTN/2PM PST) on the deadline date. Applicants are advised to start the application process at least one week before the closing date.
  • Please ensure we receive the paper application no later than one week after the closing date (one-sided, not stapled). Your application is only complete when we have received both your electronic and paper application.

  • At a DAAD Partner University: contact the DAAD campus coordinator, and submit your application to them; there may be an earlier university internal deadline. (if you miss your university’s deadline, you may alternatively submit  your application to DAAD New York) Please note this doesn’t apply to performing/visual artists.
  • Not at a DAAD Partner University: send your application directly to the DAAD New York office.

 4.      Are you ready? In order to register with the DAAD online portal to start your application, please go to the scholarship database and look for the Study Scholarships for Graduates of All Disciplines program. Select your status, your country of origin (please note that country of origin is in fact the country in which you are living and from where you are applying. Funding periods are restricted to the German academic year, which usually starts on October 1st. Funding is possible for programs lasting 10 to 24 months, depending on the length of the chosen study program

 6.    After you submit your application

  • Please DO NOT CALL OR EMAIL. You will receive an e-mail notification 8 weeks after the deadline.
  • Application decisions will not be accompanied with an explanation.
  • Applications remain with DAAD. Personal data of applicants and grantees will be stored electronically in DAAD’s files only to the extent necessary for the administration of the applications and scholarships in accordance with the German Federal Data Protection Act. Data will be provided to the respective International Student Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt) for successful applicants where necessary in order to administer the scholarship and provide the scholarship holder with guidance services. Applications of unsuccessful candidates will be destroyed after one year.
  •  Results will be announced through the portal mid-April.

Apply for Chevening Scholarships Programme 2017/2018

Description

Chevening is the UK government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders and is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organizations. Chevening offers a unique opportunity for future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship you have to meet following criteria:

  • Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country;
  • Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your scholarship has ended;
  • Have an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry to a post-graduate programme at a UK university. This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class 2:1 honours degree in the UK;
  • Have at least two years’ work experience;
  • Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an unconditional offer from one of these choices by 13 July 2017;
  • Meet the Chevening English language requirement by 13 July 2017.

Scholarship

Chevening covers a number of costs including flights, accommodation and others according to your country.

How to apply?

Applications for Chevening Scholarships open on 8 August. Applications for Chevening Fellowships open at various points during the year.

Applications for Chevening Awards can only be submitted using the Chevening online application system, available through the “apply” button on your country page.
Prior to starting your application for a Chevening Scholarship please ensure you have the following ready:

Essential:

  • Two references to be provided in a letter format and written in English;
  • Valid passport/national ID card;
  • University transcripts (undergraduate, postgraduate);
  • Three different UK Master’s course choices;
  • Please note that only documents in PDF format can be uploaded and documents cannot be over 5MB in size.

Optional:

  • English language (if already met the requirements);
  • UK Master’s university offer (if already met the requirements).

Ph.D. Scholarship in Business and Politics at Copenhagen Business School

Description

The Department of Business and Politics at Copenhagen Business School invites applications for a vacant PhD scholarship within the overall field of Business and Politics. The phd project should focus on one of the 4 research themes of the Department:

  • Business, Organizing and Governance;
  • Civil Society;
  • Money & Markets;
  • Public Policy and Institutions.

The recruited PhD candidate will be attached to the Department of Business and Politics, which emphasizes international and comparative research on states, economies, corporations, and other organizations that are involved in the governance of political and economic matters. The position is open to  political science and sociology disciplinary backgrounds and a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches.

Eligibility

  • Have a basic training at the Masters level;
  • An educational background in the political or social sciences is necessary;
  • Have successfully completed the Master’s degree before commencing a PhD at CBS;
  • Be fluent in English.

Scholarships

  • A PhD scholarship runs for a period of 3 years, and includes teaching obligations equivalent to a 1⁄2 year’s work (624 work hours);
  • The scholarships are fully salaried positions, according to the national Danish collective agreement;
  • The scholarship includes the tuition fees, office space, travel grants plus a salary, currently starting with per month app. DKK 23.770 (app. EUR 3,160) up to DKK 28.964 (app. EUR 3,860) depending on seniority, plus a pension contribution totaling 17,1 % of 85 per cent of the base salary.

Application

The mode of application is online. Application must include:

  1. 5 page project description (containing a presentation of an original research question, a description of the initial theoretical framework and methodology, a presentation of the suggested empirical material as well as a work-plan);
  2. Copies of a Master’s degree certificate or other certificates of a corresponding level;
  3. A brief curriculum vitae (CV);
  4. A list of papers and publications (if applicable);
  5. One copy of a selected written work (e.g. Master’s thesis);
  6. Documentation for English language skills, if it is not the mother tongue.

Berlin Seminar on Truth, Justice and Remembrance

Open to: participants from (post-) conflict societies from all over the world
Venue: 26 November– 8 December 2016 in Berlin, Germany

Description

The Robert Bosch Stiftung is pleased to announce its international Seminar on Truth, Justice and Remembrance. The seminar will take place in Berlin, Germany. The program facilitates cross-regional learning about dealing with the past in different societal contexts. Participants are equipped with the knowledge, tools and leadership skills necessary to facilitate and bring about meaningful progress on truth, justice, and remembrance in their societies during and after conflict.
This unique two-week seminar brings together 25 actors from (post-) conflict societies from all over the world, all of whom work on remembrance, the politics of memory, and documentation and truth-finding during and in the aftermath of conflicts.
The Berlin Seminar provides participants with the opportunity
  • to learn more about Dealing with the Past in Germany with a focus on the Nazi regime and the communist regime in the GDR as well as the ensuing public discourses;
  • to exchange best practices with participants from other post-conflict societies;
  • to work intensely on the challenges they face in their own work, organizations and societies through professional facilitation as well as through peer consultation;
  • to strengthen their leadership skills and to develop strategies for self-management and self-care.
The program includes visits to different sites of memory and meetings with representatives from politics, civil society and media, witnesses and experts as well as advanced application workshops with selected German institutions and individuals. The program will furthermore include sessions on leadership development and systemic analysis, and offers space to discuss and reflect on the learnings in an international group from different (post-)conflict societies.

Eligibility

To be considered for the program, candidates will have to meet the following criteria:
  • The program is targeted at mid-career and senior staff working for civil society organizations, government bodies and media institutions with relevant work experience in the field of dealing with the past. Practitioners, activists and experts from (post-) conflict societies directly involved in peace processes are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Have very good English skills in order to participate in group discussions and to write a short reflection paper.
  • Be open to a comparative and participatory learning experience: Participants are expected to actively engage with participants from other countries, to consult to each other on challenges they face in their home contexts, and to share reflections and lessons learned within the group.
Prior knowledge about Germany is not required.

Costs

Robert Bosch Stiftung will cover travel to and from Germany, accommodation and other related costs for local travel, lunches and drinks.
