Projects that empower are projects that have the ability inspire entire generations, even from one to the next.  It these kinds of course altering projects that have the power to change the course of whole groups of people, even entire cultures.

If you are a Highschool student, or attend University, and your desire is to be involved in the kinds of projects don’t just change your own life but have the ability to change those of the people around you, by working as a part of a team that is dedicated to discovering, learning from and achieving great things with, then we have the tools that you need to succeed.

Intercultural Innovation Camp

The iiCamp project was developed, and launched by, the YouCan Trust – a non profit organisation focused on the individual support of young adults.
Our unique summer camps offer young adults the chance to visit some of the most beautiful locations in the world, while providing the tools and support needed to develop intercultural competency – itself a vital tool in today’s increasingly interconnected world, which helps us to understand other cultures and how they interact, exchange ideas and communicate.

Being able to communicate effectively with those from ‘outside’ cultures is becoming ever more important, and not just for business; understanding how a local activity or event has an effect on the people living there can have a tremendous impact, and be a force for great good.

Programs, projects and highlights

In order to achieve this, and to provide once in a lifetime opportunities, iiCamp project themes change every single year. For example, a recent project in Cambodia involved the creation  Siem Reap map – which helped tourists find their way around safely and effectively, which in itself provided the local economy with a small, but needed, boost.

The Summer Peacebuilding Program 2015 in California, United States

Description

We are excited to launch the Summer Peacebuilding Program (SPP), a three-week long intensive training program designed to bridge the theory and practice of building peace in societies that are emerging from conflict, violence or war.

SPP builds on the ‘Peace’ dimension that was explored for two years (2013 and 2014) in the Peace, Trade and Development program. SPP provides an opportunity for participants to learn from the experiences and approaches of scholars and practitioners who work on some of the most difficult challenges our world faces today, including: resolving conflict, ending all forms of violence, providing social justice, and creating more secure and developed societies by transforming the conditions and relationships of conflict. SPP therefore welcomes all those interested in exploring the above-mentioned topics  through a process of self-reflection, gathering of theoretical and conceptual data and its application to real world problems.

The 2015 program will run from July 27 to August 14, 2015. The first week of SPP is residential at the Mount Madonna Center for the Creative Arts and Sciences (http://www.mountmadonna.org/) in Watsonville, CA. The second and third weeks of SPP will be held at the MIIS campus (www.miis.edu) in Monterey with a lodging option within walking distance to campus.

Eligibility

Students and practitioners in the field of conflict, peace, development and security studies are eligible to apply.

Costs

The SPP program cost, which covers lodging for three weeks, board for week one and all course related expenses for three weeks is USD 3500. Course fees for Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) students are USD 3000. Students can receive academic credits for the program (paying additional tuition fees as required by their own educational institution)

Scholarships

There are two types of scholarships available:

An early bird discount. Those applying before midnight on Feb. 15, 2015 can take USD 250 off the program cost.There are two merit scholarships of USD 500 available to two highly qualified and deserving candidates. Candidates must send in a letter along with their application addressing the scholarship criteria. Deservedness will be decided using the following criteria:

  1. High GPA/ Strong academic record
  2. Work experience in the field of Conflict Studies
  3. Displays strong motivation to work in the field of Conflict Studies
  4. Financial Constraints

The two scholarships may not be combined. Scholarship decisions will be made by March 15, 2015. Scholarships are not available to MIIS students.

2015 Global Change Leaders Program for Women in Canada!

Description

The Global Change Leaders Program is a seven-week education program offered by Coady Institute’s International Centre for Women’s Leadership.  This program enables women from developing countries to strengthen their leadership capacities in order to contribute to innovation and change in their organizations and communities.  Program participants engage in learning grounded in real world experiences and focused on Coady’s core thematic areas.  Through a shared learning environment with other emerging women leaders from around the world, participants are exposed to a range of experiences and the beginnings of a potentially lifelong network of support.

In operation since 2011, the Global Change Leaders program provides successful candidates with a full scholarship that includes tuition, travel, accommodations, and meals. Program participants also benefit from the guidance and mentorship of accomplished women leaders from around the world. The program is led by a core team of Coady International Institute staff and supported by other Coady faculty and associates.

Eligibility

This program is targeted to emerging women leaders from developing countries who are working on development issues.  These are women who:

  • Possess a minimum of four years of demonstrated leadership experience in a social or economic development endeavour in sectors such as livelihoods or inclusive economic development, food security, environment, access to education and health care, governance, and the rights of girls and women;
  • Have great drive and passion for their work, demonstrated through their outstanding contributions in their organizations and communities;
  • Are practitioners in civil society organizations including community based organizations and not for profits, or active in public or private institutions, donor/philanthropic agencies, social movements or in a social enterprise/business;
  • Hold a university degree or a combination of post-secondary education and experience; and
  • Have strong oral and written English language competencies.

Costs

  • The Global Change Leaders Program provides successful candidates with a full scholarship that includes tuition, travel, accommmodations and meals
  • Program participants also benefit from the guidance and mentorship of accomplished women leaders from around the world

Volunteer Abroad Program

Annually more than 100 students participate in exchange programs held by AIESEC Azerbaijan

As the upcoming Volunteer Abroad Program  – Global Citizen will happen during autumn and winter, it is an ideal opportunity for recent university graduates and extramural students.

The internship programs include interesting and colorful projects organized by a team of young people from all over the world. The duration of these internship programs is 6 weeks. The intented projects for fall and winter will be held in Turkey, Bulgaria, Crotia and Slovakia. 11 projects will be held in Turkey are already known. Among these projects are “Break Up The Barriers” project which aim to work with children and youth and “NGO Consult” project which description to help NGO’s improvement. Projects begining dates are December and January.

 

The internship program mainly covers the accomodation and food expences (1 to 3 times a day, depending on the project). Flight ticket and visa expences have to be covered by the participant.

International Institute of Peace and Development Studies (IIPDS) in cooperation with Asian Resource Foundation (ARF) and Asian Muslim Action Network (AMAN), announces Women Peace Negotiator’s Training Program” in Bangkokscheduled on 7th -10th of December, 2014. The program is soliciting applications from potential female candidates interested in peace negotiations, lawyers, mediators, human rights activist, youth leaders and advocacy campaigners. and to those who are interested to develop and share their knowledge and skills in the related field.

Training Overview

The post-cold war era witnessed the shift in conflict patterns from inter to intra state conflicts with more diverse and complex characteristics ranging from socio-economic and political to ethno-religious conflicts. The rise of extremism and terrorism has been perceived as global threat. Regime change and transitions has politicized the use of violence. Hegemony and power domination are destabilizing regions and countries. Regardless of its nature, modern day’s conflict has witnessed destructive violence with human casualties. Today, nearly 90 percent of current war casualties are civilians, the majority of whom are women and children. Violence against women is greatly exacerbated in conflict zones. It is well said that “women are the hardest hit of the conflict”, as the victimization perpetuates lifetime. It shows the importance of women’s participation in shaping theirs as well as country’s future which often starts with peace negotiations.

Training Objectives
1. To offer a sharing and learning platform from the experience of peace negotiators and activist
2. To Provide participants deeper insights on peace negotiations through theoretical and practical sessions
3. To promote the equal participation and career development of women in peace negotiation through the enhancement of their negotiation skills
4. To establish a network of women peace activists and negotiators

 

Eligibility

This training program is designed for women. Hence, women representative from following fields and institutions can participate:

  1.  Negotiators, mediators, arbitrators and humanitarian workers
  2.  Government professionals working for peace
  3.  Human rights activists and civil society leaders
  4.  NGOs and INGOs (national and international staffs working on peace)
  5.  This course is also open for women specialists (civil, police, military) currently working or who are planning to work in complex humanitarian and peace operations

  •  Course Fee: 100 USD
  •  Organizers do not provide participants airfare and visa expenses. Successful participant are responsible for their travels and visa expenses

The winner must be accepted into one of the four master’s programs at Chalmers’ Technology Management and Economics department, and the scholarship granted to the winning student is contingent upon his/her acceptance into their chosen program. The formal admission acceptance will be provided by University Admissions in March 2015.
NOTE: Winning the competition does not mean that admission to a master’s program is automatically guaranteed.

Vacancy for IHF Co-Director (Volunteering)

If you’re looking for a long-term volunteering opportunity, the International Humanity Foundation is offering you the chance to help in our children’s home.

 

IHF is looking for hard-working, committed volunteers to help in our six centers in Thailand, Kenya and Indonesia. IHF provides education, and in some cases, homes, to children. IHF has no central headquarters; each center is a product of its environment and follows the cultural code and norms of its host country.

 

We have four centers in Indonesia, in Bali, Jakarta, Medan and Banda Aceh. Our Jakarta and Aceh centers provide homes to a small number of children, while all centers offer English, math and computer classes to disadvantaged children. With a population of over 240 million, Indonesia’s public education system often fails to give children a chance to escape the poverty they were born into. We fill that gap and give kids a chance to aim higher.

 

Our Thailand center is a home for hill-tribe children. Children from this marginalised community come to our center for a stable home and a chance for an education.

 

Our Kenya center is a children’s home and also provides emergency relief to the surrounding community. This is the biggest IHF center, with approximately 100 kids. The kids are from the marginalised Pokot tribe, whose conditions are amongst the worse in Kenya. Living conditions in this region are harsh, and we provide basic needs such as a home, food, and access to education to children who would otherwise go without. We also run livestock donation projects and other initiatives to relieve the extreme poverty where we can.

 

At the center, you will divide your time between caring for the children and working on international tasks. IHF is a grassroots, all-volunteer organisation with no central office, so all administration work is done in center. All volunteers manage one or more of our international task teams such as university relations, fundraising and media; working together online with volunteers in other centers. You will be assigned according to your experience. You must possess excellent time management skills.
Those who are secure without the comforts of home gain the most from this valuable opportunity. We are looking for applicants preferably with:

– A related university degree; eg. in social studies, language, teaching, medicine, law, social work

– Experience abroad; travel, working or volunteering

– 1-2 years working experience in any field

– Experience with teaching and/or children

Fluency in English, both written and spoken is essential. Those interested in volunteering at an IHF centre are required to complete a level of pre-trip duties in order to gain an understanding of how our organization functions.

 

Stipend: Volunteers must commit to serve at least a year at the center. Basic accommodation and food is provided by IHF. You are a volunteer at the center, and all local tasks completed are done so without pay. Volunteers who commit to serving one year or more will receive a small monthly stipend. It is broken down as follow:-

 

First 3 months: Training period – $20 per month

 

3-6 months: Assistant co-Director – $50 per month

 

6-9 months: Co-Director – $80 per month

 

9-12 months: Co-Director – $100 per month

 

This stipend results only from the international online work; not from any local tasks.

 

After one year there is the opportunity to become a full Director.

 

Strict IHF Policy: These stipends are fixed. They will not be raised for more experienced applicants, and everyone will be upgraded according to the timeframes outlined above, and no sooner. There are no exceptions to this, regardless of what may be the situation in the centre. We are an all-Volunteer organization and training and hands-on experience is paramount.

International Conference on “European and Eurasian migration system: similarities and ” in Russia

We kindly invite you to take part in the International scientific-practical conference “European and Eurasian migration system: similarities and differences of legal regulation”, which will be held on 11-12 December 2014 at Kazan Federal University.
This International conference seeks to address the urgent issues of modern science and practice in the field of migration:

  • what are the main features of European and Eurasian migration systems?
  • How do the two systems interact with each other?
  • how migration processes are regulated in the framework of regional organizations in Europe and the former Soviet Union: such as in the EU, the CIS and EurAsEC?
  • what are similarities and differences in the legal regulation of the two migration systems?
  • what are the trends and prospects for the legal regulation of migration processes in the European Union and in the Eurasian area?

The conference will be conducted by the Department for International and European Law of the Law Faculty, the Centre of the European Union VOICES, the Institute for the Comparative Studies of Modernity, Kazan Federal University.

The conference is structured around the following areas:

  • The Existence of independent European and Eurasian migration system within the concept of migration systems;
  • Points of contact between European and Eurasian migration systems: the impact of the migration policies of the former Soviet Union and the European Union;
  • International legal regulation of migration to the EU, the CIS and EurAsEC: similarities and differences;
  • Features of migration regulation in the context of EU enlargement;
  • Problems of migration control in border areas;
  • Ensuring the rights of refugees, migrant workers and other workers in different countries of the EU, the CIS and EurAsEC;
  • Trends and perspectives of legal regulation of migration processes in the framework of European and Eurasian migration systems.

The conference brings together early career researchers and established scholars and practitioners in the field of migration, law and social policy and we invite international scholars, teachers, doctoral students, graduate students, undergraduates of universities, students, representatives of the regional and federal authorities to apply to attend.

Think-Eat-Save Student Challenge

Description

Check out your pantry or your fridge and imagine just throwing away one third of all the food that is in there. Imagine throwing away one third of the food in your shopping cart after paying for it. Or picture all those lunch trays at your school and imagine one third of them being wasted. Food waste is a massive global problem that has negative humanitarian, environmental and financial implications and schools are a huge part of this story. For instance, in England, schools throw out some 123,000 tonnes of food a year, costing around £250 million a year. If you are an American student, you are responsible for 67 pounds of discarded lunch waste every school year.

Think-eat-save Student Challenge is calling all food waste warriors in high schools and universities worldwide to fight food waste and compete for thousands of dollars of prizes. Your task is to uncover how much food gets wasted in your schools, organize a team and take action to reduce food waste. Take action by launching a team project that will prevent or reduce food waste. Raise awareness among students and teachers to stop wasting food. Spread the word to all your friends on your social media networks. If they choose your project, your team or school will receive a cash prize to further support your initiative.

Eligibility

This competition is open to all students at the secondary and university levels from any school worldwide. To participate, students must undertake an activity or a project that will address any of the following:

  • Assess the level of food waste that is generated by the school and identify/understand the causes of this;
  • Generate an idea or ideas for eliminating or reducing food waste in their schools (for example, better planning, preparation, storage, consumption of the food in their cafeterias; recycling or redistribution of left-overs; etc.) and undertaking a project to implement at least one of these;
  • Raise awareness in their schools or communities on the issue of food waste and why it should be reduced and eventually eliminated.

Award

Three winning projects will be selected and will receive cash prizes as follow:

  • First place: US$ 5,000;
  • Second place: US$ 3,000;
  • Third place: US$ 2,000;
